The Insta 360 Go3s: A Revolutionary Action Camera

The Insta 360 Go3s is a revolutionary action camera that takes all the great features of its predecessor, the Go3, and adds even more to it. A few thoughts on the Go3s

When the Insta 360 Go3 was first released last year, I reviewed it in detail and covered its features in several videos over the past year. Since then, I've had the chance to use the Go3s extensively, and I can confidently say that it's my favorite action camera to date. The Go3s took all the great features of its predecessor and added even more to it, making it an incredibly versatile and portable camera.

and the go3 quickly became one of my favorite action cameras ever made it's my favorite in the insta 360 lineup and the go3s has some major improvements over the go3 so the go3 is designed for versatility but it kind of capped out in terms of image quality and so there's a lot of new features on the go3s including the ability to record up to 4K 30p video so we've got a major Improvement bump in image quality there are many other new features as well that we're going to get into but first of all let's just talk about the camera so the first thing that I love about this camera it is Tiny that is the actual camera this is the smallest action camera that I've ever used and I love that because I can put this anywhere Now using the go3s is super easy so right now the camera is completely powered off we can use what's called quick capture which basically means I'm going to press the front of the camera once and it immediately Powers up and starts recording and so I can press it begin to stop or another cool feature that is new that I absolutely love is let's say right now I'm just recording myself for a demo here and I don't want this footage on the camera because it's just going to add to the clips and we all know what that's like I can actually delete and erase the current take and what I do is I long press the camera and it'll stop recording and delete the clip so this is how you use this in Standalone mode and the other thing you can use is the included action pod now this has a magnetic attachment to it so it just clips into place like so the the action pod will do a couple things first of all we have a touchcreen on the back that is tiltable so if you're doing vlogging types of things or if you want some kind of monitor to what it is that you're recording you can use this for that the other thing is it has a bigger battery inside so it will extend the battery life and it will also charge the Standalone go3s so this is actually a really cool setup and remember I mentioned that quick function so you can just turn the camera on and start recording well we have that on the action pod as well and the quick button is customizable so if you want to assign it to do something else it can act as a custom function button the other cool thing about the action pod is this does give you a visual interface for all of your settings so for instance if I swipe from the top down I have access to all of my camera settings swiping from right to left is going to give you all of your exposure controls swiping up from the bottom is going to give you resolution in frame rate options and of course swiping from the left to the right is going to access your library of Clips oh and another cool thing if I remove the go3s from the action pod the action pod now becomes a wireless remote monitor so this is really so it allows you to still preview if you have the go3s mounted somewhere else there's two other really cool features that you can use to control the camera so one is using voice control so with voice control activated in the camera I can say things like start recording and the camera will immediately start recording it can also say things like stop recording and it now stops you can also turn on gesture control which allows you to do two things if I hold up my hand as a palm it will immediately start recording and you can take a still photo by by giving the peace sign so in addition to the higher resolution 4K that we now have on the go3s there are a lot of other little features that insta 360 is so good at across their lineup we have Flow State image stabilization it allows me just to handhold the camera like I am now with no Gimbal and it gets rid of all the micro Jitters Smooths out the footage there's another couple things too that come in quite handy so sometimes with smaller cameras especially when you've got a magnetic Mount and you're just kind of throwing it up there sometimes the horizon line is not exactly straight well now we have tilt fix which allows within a 10° margin of air if you're slightly off the camera will go ahead and compensate and fix it I want to talk a little bit about lens options on this camera so right now I am using the dewarp mode which keeps everything from looking like a fisheye it's really good for vlogging but we also have a mega option now Mega view is not only much wider you can get more in the scene but it's also really cool because it also keeps it from warping and looking like an ultra wideangle lens does sometimes so this is a really cool new feature that we have on the go3s and of course we also so can tap to zoom in could do that on the fly so now we are at 2x so this gives you some different options that you can do to keep your footage kind of moving and give it a little more character to your video and so there's some really cool things that you can do with this camera the camera also has a mode for Jitter blur reduction which is really cool if you're filming at night a lot of times when the light gets really low and the camera has to compensate for things now we can get rid of that and this camera also features Dolby Vision which is going to give you more Nuance details much better contrast more detail there's a lot of upgrades to the image quality in the the go3s so using the go3s handheld works pretty well with all the image stabilization but sometimes you want to be able to go handsfree so let's look at some of the mounting options and these are all included with the camera so first of all if you're using the action pod this does have the standard magnetic clip insta 360 mounting system and there's a tripod adapter so I simply just attach this to the camera and allows me to screw in a tripod and you can also micro adjust this to get the just level and just right also included is a sticky Mount and the way this works is you basically just screw this into the tripod socket like so and on the bottom is just a stick pad so literally you can just stick this anywhere and it will Mount and to keep this clean from getting filthy it has a little cover attached to so when you're not using that you can pop that back on to remove the action pod it's clipped into place and there's a release on each side so I'm just going to press those both in and it comes right off and while using this with the action pod is useful I actually like to use the camera just by itself and there's some options you have with this as well I mentioned it is magnetic and one of the options is you have this little pendant is what they call this and so what you're going to do is simply put this around your neck stick the camera in place and you can film either vertical or horizontal if you want doesn't matter and if you can't decide you can of course use the free form video option to film in 1080 and then you can crop later in post another thing I love is the included clip so once again magnetic I just stick that in there this allows me to basically clip that to anything so you can put it on a ball cap you could put it on a shelf anything that this will clip to and you can also mix and match some some of these too so the clip is magnetic so I can put this let's say on the pendant and now I have the option of angling the camera up and down and of course insta 360 does offer a ton of options on their website which is really cool so you can use things like this GoPro Mount so if you have GoPro accessories you can now Mount the action pod clip it in place and mount it to any of your GoPro stuff oh and another accessory that is really cool is this quick reader so let's say that you have a lot of footage on the insta 360 go you want to move this over and back it up to your phone let's say I simply stick that in place and there are two connections on here you have a USBC on one side push it the other way and you've got a lightning connection and under the USBC connection you're going to see a Micro SD slot so if you're not ready to put footage on your phone necessarily you can back it up to a card as well all right so we've talked about how portable the go3s is as well as how easy it is to use now ease of use also extends into editing this is one of my favorite things about insta 360 in general is their app is really good it's easy to connect to the camera and what's really cool is there's some new features in the go3s so if you're viewing the library you can instantly download any clip straight to the phone by touching the little icon in the lower right the go3s offers a ton of creative tools to make really cool video effects such as time shift brand new to the go3s is motion ND which allows you to get a more cinematic look to your footage also new is dynamic time lapse and clip clip it to your shirt and just let it go and so basically what it's going to do is it's going to assemble footage throughout the day now what's really cool about this is it conserves battery life by just powering everything down when it's not being used and you're just going to get random segments of your day but then when you import this into the app you can use the AI editor just to set this to music or something and it does a really good job of picking interesting footage and stringing it together I actually didn't think this is something that I would use much this is a really cool way to shoot video this would be great for people who are on vacation something like that you just want it to pick up some random Clips during the day and you don't want to spend a lot of time setting the camera up and posing and figuring out what your shots are going to be this is a great way of just getting b-roll footage that you can assemble into a music montage it's actually really cool now
