Setting Up My Gaming Station Audio System
Setting up my gaming station audio system was a total breeze. My microphone fits snugly into the shock mount which screwed onto the boom arm and from there it was just a matter of fixing the desk lamp, attaching the stand, and connecting the mic to my PC's USB output. Oh, and we forgot to mount the pop filter within minutes I had a fully-functional microphone configuration that takes up virtually zero desk space and actually adds some cool flair to my gaming station.
Mic Stand Kit Review
I wasn't expecting much from my mic stand kit here but the quality is good for the price. You get all black parts for a stealthy appearance and it includes everything you need to float a microphone elegantly off your desk. There are a few minor shortcomings like the way the connection between the arm and desk lamp loosens up when turning the stand left and right making a simple pivot less than graceful. Fortunately, I won't be panning the arm nearly as much as lifting it up and down which works perfectly fine. Additionally, the 32-inch arm is barely long enough to be mounted behind my massive 32-inch monitor meaning the closest I can get the mic to my mouth hole is about an arm's length away. It still picks me up beautifully at that range but some users will want the option for bringing the mic right up to their mouth for more intimate recordings.
Hooking Up My Microphone
Hooking up my microphone to the PC could not have been simpler with my Behringer unit supporting a single XLR input with 48 volt phantom power. Quality features include front-facing knobs and a quarter-inch headphone output. There's also a pair of quarter-inch outputs on the back that look pretty lonely without a set of beefy studio monitors attached, which by the way, if you guys have any recommendations, let me know down below. I should also mention that this thing looks awesome from any angle again just adding a nice splash of cool to the overall setup. The unit definitely looks more expensive than it is and while it may not be an ideal choice if I ever decide to add audiophile-grade devices, it's a great starting point if you're just trying to get things connected.
Favorite Quality
My favorite quality about my microphone is that it has a great weight for its size and pairing that with its rubber feet ensures the unit stays grounded when adjusting the knobs or plugging things in. Last but not least, if you're at all into audio, you already know that the Audio-Technica AT2020 is one hell of a bargain. There's good reason it's one of the most critically acclaimed mics in its price range, clean sound excellent sensitivity and dynamic range make for an impressive package all around.
Sound Test
As a proof of performance here's a quick sound test between the built-in mic on Corsair's Void Pro RGB gaming headset and microphone of the hour, check 1-2 testing 1-2-3. This is the built-in microphone that we're using now on the Corsair Void Pro RGB gaming headset so let's go ahead and switch over now to the audio-technica AT2020 for a comparison, check one-two testing one-two-three. This is now the AT2020 microphone from Audio Technica that we're using and it should sound quite a bit better than the corsair gaming headset otherwise I've just been ripped off as you can clearly hear there's really no competition with a gaming headset in the room.
The AT2020 arguably passes for studio-grade quality while the average gaming headset sounds like a phone call from an underwater cave in the mountains to top it all off, it's just a beautiful mic, simple professional, and blacked-out, just the way I like it. Making my new setup look as good as it sounds also bonus points for not resembling a stick of deodorant.
Conclusion
Overall, this audio setup kicks a whole lot of ass for well under $200 and while I can already hear the snobby audio files laughing up a storm in glorious 24-bit 192-kilohertz clarity, this is a great mainstream solution for enhancing voice quality without compromising on desk space at least for a filthy casual like myself. But that's gonna do it for now guys let me know what you think of my new audio setup and which microphone you're currently using at home even if it looks like it belongs in someone else's armpit before you guys go feel free to toss me a look on the video if you enjoyed it, and check out bitwit ultra my ad-free early access channel for a buck 50 a month.
