Welcome to Kosher.com BookNook: Where Every Week We Read a Short Story from a Book
Grab your blankie and squishmallow, and let's get cozy! This week, we're going to dive into Arts Girls Living Shabas story. You can either grab your book and follow along or just settle in and listen. Either way, you're in for a treat.
Baron Rothchild straightened his tie, put on his hat, and headed out the door. He was excited for Shabbos, his favorite day of the week. As he walked to SCH (which we can assume stands for some sort of community center or synagogue), he joyfully listened to the rough speech around him. Once he arrived at SCH, he continued his observance with careful attention.
When Baron Rothchild reached his house, he made a delicious Shabbos meal for himself and his family. He said, "Shabbos was Baron Rothchild's most favorite day." This statement tells us that Baron Rothchild held Shabbos in high regard. On Friday afternoons, the Baron would stop all his business activities and prepare for the Sabbath.
Baron Rothchild was extremely wealthy, ranking him as one of the richest people in Europe. He was also a proud Jew, which is reflected in his actions and observance throughout the story. When it comes to Shabbos, the Baron would go out of his way to ensure that he was fully immersed in the day's observances.
On this particular Friday afternoon, however, something unusual happened. Without realizing it, a company by the name of Global Deals had sent a telegram to Baron Rothchild. They were eager to offer him an incredible opportunity - a chance to purchase their business for 2 million, 500,000 German marks. This was a substantial amount of money, but we soon learn that Baron Rothchild wouldn't be taking any time to ponder this option.
The problem is that the Barons stopped all his business activities on Shabbos. When he received the first telegram, he didn't even notice it, let alone take time to think about the offer. The same went for the second and third telegrams - each was met with silence from Baron Rothchild. Global Deals grew anxious as they realized that their offer was being overlooked.
The next day, while singing, Baron Rothchild received a telegram again. This one offered him an even better deal, with a price tag of 1,700,000 marks. However, much like before, the Baron didn't give it any thought. The company at Global Deals continued to wait for a response from the Baron but realized that he was not interested in making any business deals on Shabbos.
Baron Rothchild eventually saw all three telegrams and decided to purchase the business for 1,700,000 marks - the final offer made by Global Deals. While it may seem like the company took advantage of a distracted Baron, what's truly remarkable is that they had been lowering their price every step of the way, saving him an incredible amount of money.
It wasn't until later that year when Baron Rothchild sold his new business for a much higher price than he initially paid. This outcome highlights just how wise it was of Baron Rothchild to avoid making any financial decisions on Shabbos. The story teaches us a valuable lesson: not only does Hashem reward us in the next world, but He also rewards us in this world.
So, the next time you're tempted to make important business decisions during Shabbos, remember Baron Rothchild's wisdom and take heed of his actions.
