The World's First 150 Mile Per Hour Tractor: A Glimpse into its Capabilities and Driver's Experience
Always a privilege, but there's something equally as satisfying about this chunky robustness of this thing I had to get Lucan sight inside here, there's some proper racing car stuff we've got digital screens. Tell me exactly what's going on, we've got a proper bucket seat that guy Martin will have had to squeeze himself into. Where we go? We've got three pedals of steering wheel and a gearshift. Pretty simple I guess, but then you think about it - you're not posing horsepower tractor; it's got fuel on roll kids, and this thing is actually rear-wheel drive, they're just sending that power to the back so maybe you get some wheel spin maybe you get oversteer in a vehicle this size seeing that it does still weigh five tonnes, the standard fast track tractor from JCB weighs 8 tonnes. So they've managed to strip three tonnes off it but still 5000 kilograms of mass to shift away - achieving 150 miles an hour in something that weighs that much is truly incredible.
I've been told the nought to 60 is around 9-10 seconds, so I guess this could outrun a simple hatchback or even a saloon car with you know, a decent sized engine and a proper piece of kit. The record accomplished by the tractor was a two-way average of 135 miles an hour, and a peak speed of a hundred and fifty three miles an hour, with bike racer Guy Martin at the wheel.
Four cars that this tractor is faster than include a Tesla Model 3 long range, a Nissan 300zx, a Honda s2000, and a Mini JCB.
Let's find out what this thing is actually like to drive. Guy Martin, thank you for talking to us; people may not think that you're a tractor man but you're actually quite into the mind. Don't chatter? Yeah, we're on time, yeah, yeah, yeah, oh you say failed farmer just BAM well, yeah, I have a lot on it, I Drive it a bit potatoes, general cultivation work now and then, yeah, cool match time take you drilling so it takes this thing is next level. And you're used to driving on lightweight sports bikes up to 200 miles an hour, so why is it like driving something that weighs this much at 150 miles an hour? Yeah, fair bit getting used to maybe cuz yeah attractive doors about 53 k an hour what's that, what's that about 40 mile an hour. It was like anyway, yeah, my cars rattling does that flat down that yeah, I'm getting a hundred mile an hour tractor, yeah, he took a bit again, you see what we did now.
What's the dawn if the wrongs in a hundred mile an hour tractor when you first then it? My house clean up in grim death, yeah, just a mile an hour traffic, what and do just get over and over and over again. We just got yet got immune to the speed, and and he was just it was just easy at the end, is it so odd yes fight on 5,000 horsepower but it is stable, so my boss Jeremy has bought the farm himself, you're serious coming up right?
And what what is it easy proper farmer, he walk Clark's. And of course he's gonna hammering it is God knows a lot right potatoes that's all I've heard so far, but I mean does he do everything goes in subcontracted does he bother using grim ease? I self-propelled, I have known it should know this, I'm just saying with Clarkson I am in a three rich former.
I don't know, I don't know you should know you should know Holly Clark she was kicking a bass fields would this be perfect for it there's a time and a place for a fast right? Yeah, Coulson, it's got a fan yeah general fan where this is great this is great um yeah this certain job that EXL a certain job, you can do a fan well then that's why it's such a varied workers work. Can you play at 150 miles an hour? You can't play 150 mile an hour and I don't know how many four is you'd pull and depends what land you're working and I don't know where these lands, Oxfordshire right okay what's that gonna be that heavy land I'll to the chip is it you know we should know how many.
Anyway, anyway, you'll learn all this mate, you're right generally get yourself on the best yeah, what a guy, a lesson for next time we'll learn all about basic farming practices especially blowing, got absolutely schooled there though that's it. The world's first 150 mile an hour tractor but we want you guys to decide shoo Jeremy get himself one of these I think he definitely deserves it.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enyou guys will have heard the news that Jeremy Hobson s recently bought a farm and we think we found the perfect equal for him it's this a JCB the fast track the fastest tractor this isn't just any fast track it's the fast track to a one-off brute that is purely built for straight-line speed after blasting past a hundred miles an hour with the fast track one JCB has taken this to a whole new level a lot okay guy that looked like a good run just park about your yellow marks now most tractors have a top speed of 30 40 miles an hour on the road this thing does a hundred and fifty three miles an hour a tractor that does over 150 that's absolutely insane so how is it done it well like most race cars it's time to power a rule and just damn good engineering so let's take a look at what makes this thing so quick being an engine guide there is plenty to get excited about under the bonnet so let's check out the engine it's a straight-6 diesel engine and its twin chars like I guess the Group B rally cars of the 80s here you've got an electric supercharger and on the other side you have a massive turbocharger so while you're waiting for that big turbocharger to spool up you use the electric supercharger to get those engine revs going and get the power to the rear wheels one of the coolest things for me is this charge cooler by then so that's the same company that helps out the Toyota lmp1 car now the job of this thing is to take the really hot air from the turbo and the supercharger and cool it down before enters the engine to maximize the efficiency of the combustion now air enters this thing at 250 degrees centigrade and the same that comes out the other side it's only thirty degree centigrade so this thing gets sort of 220 degrees so that there's nice and cool and that engine can breathe to its maximum potential for all of the 7.2 litres of displacement to breathe fully some trickery was needed you can see at the front here there's these 3d printed funnels essentially for the intake and for cooling and then down here you'll find what makes this charge cooler so effective underneath these panels here there is a tank under there that we threw ice into 25 kilograms of ices used to maximize the efficiency of the combustion cooling during that hot air which allows this engine to create a thousand horsepower the exact number is 1006 horsepower that is more than a Bugatti Veyron in a tractor absolutely insane having a thousand horsepower is one thing but to make this thing reach a hundred and fifty miles an hour you need decent ero to make it less of a slab blasting through the air the fast-track to has a beefy front splitter a pivotal piece of kit to reaching the vehicles top speed now when you're traveling at 150 miles an hour in something this size you have to get the ero balance right otherwise it will be unstable you can't have the tractor too long because with this ero it actually creates growth effect and which sucked the tractor into the tarmac and we'd restrict its top speed but also you can have it raid them too high because then the frontal area will be too large and that will also create drag so you have to get that balance just right and with this tractor they managed it and as if this thing could get crazier it's got a rudimentary diffuser and a parachute look at the size that differentials massive checking out the innards of a supercar is always a privilege but there's something equally as satisfying about this chunky robustness of this thing I had to get Lucan sight inside here there's some proper racing car stuff we've got digital screens tell me exactly what's going on we've got a proper bucket seat that guy Martin will have had to squeeze himself into
