Shai Agnon: A Famous Writer's Big Prize
Shai Agnon was a renowned writer who had been awarded the Literature Prize from the King of Sweden. What made this event even more special was that it was scheduled to take place on Shabbat, a day of rest and observance for Jews around the world. As you can imagine, Shai wanted to make sure he didn't disrupt his own Shabbat or disturb others who were also observing the Sabbath.
A Polite Request
The Prime Minister of Israel warned Shai that he shouldn't drive to Sweden on Shabbat, as it would be against Jewish law. Shai, being a considerate and respectful person, kindly requested that the Prime Minister let the King know instead. He wanted to ensure that his arrival wouldn't disturb anyone who was keeping Shabbat.
Shabbiness Galore!
Shai decided to enjoy his Shabbat by doing all sorts of relaxing activities. He would take long walks, sing, and even do some shabbiness-themed exercises! After finishing his leisurely activities, he made Havdala, a traditional Jewish ritual that marks the end of Shabbat. To celebrate, he lit Hanukah candles, which just so happened to be on the same day as Shabbat.
The Grand Ceremony
As soon as Shabbat was over, Shai quickly rushed outside to the limousine waiting for him. With a speedy ride, he arrived at the special ceremony where he would receive his prize. When Shai walked in, everyone noticed him right away because he was wearing a yarmulke (yamaka), while everyone else was dressed in fancy top hats.
The King's Surprise
When Shai reached the King, he cleared his throat and made the special blessing of "Shalak M Laas." The King asked what this meant after listening quietly. Shai then explained that when one makes such a blessing, they are acknowledging that Hashem (God) shared some of His kingship and Majesty with a human king โ in this case, him! Shai stood before the King as a human representative, sharing God's glory and honor.
A Heartwarming Moment
The King had never heard of this blessing before and felt honored to know that he shared some of God's kingship. The two leaders warmly shook hands, and everyone rose in respect for Shai. This moment showcased that keeping Shabbat wasn't just about resting; it was also about showing reverence and respect for something greater.
A Valuable Lesson
Shai's story teaches us a valuable lesson: we don't have to be afraid of being different or speaking up about our beliefs, especially on special days like Shabbat. When we choose to keep Shabbat, we not only honor the Sabbath but also show respect and kindness towards others who may observe it differently. By embracing our differences and celebrating what makes us unique, we can build stronger friendships and a deeper connection with ourselves and others.
Welcome back to Kosher Kids Book Nook! We hope you enjoyed this tale of Shai Agnon's special prize and the valuable lessons it teaches us about Shabbat and being true to oneself. Grab your blankie, snuggle up, and get ready for our next exciting adventure together!
