"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enWe're coming at you from thefloor of the 2019 Detroit AutoShow--next, on Talking Cars.Hi, and welcome back.I'm Mike Quincy.I'm Jake Fisher. And I'm Mike Monticello. So we have a special editionof Talking Cars today, coming to you from the floorof the Detroit Auto Show. This is a place where welove to be every year. And others enjoybeing here, too. This is a popularplace, obviously. So being here, surrounded by cars--this is reallywhere we love to be.But honestly, Jake, this year'sshow feels a little different.Well, Detroit, right? It's the North AmericanInternational Auto Show. What Detroit isreally known for--and I think it's still thisyear-- is about muscle. It's about big trucks, andmuscle, and horsepower, and we're seeing a lot of that. And actually, what's differentis that you look at CAS.You've got LA AutoShow, and everyone'stalking about all this whizbang gadgetry, and electric, and connected, andinfotainment systems--not much of that here. It's about horsepower. The RAM-- heavy dutyRAM-- we're talking1,000 foot-pounds of torque.Yeah.Giant amount. You could basically hookup a winch to this buildingand just slightlyhit the throttle, and you'll pull itoff its foundation.I mean, that's whattorque is all about, and that's what that thing has.And every automakerobviously wantsto be the torqueof the town, so--Oh, my God.Oh, my God.That's OK.We're going to cut that out.So it's good. It's big horsepower--just big everything. The physicalvehicles are bigger, the horsepower is bigger--Everything has got 7 passengers.Everything has got a third row.Right, but the other shows arekind of-- forgive the pun--muscling in on Detroit.Oh, my God.There he goes again.Right? But sure.Sure.This is making the organizersrethink everything.Well, what's interesting isthat, while maybe there'smore sexy at LA and CAS,and there's more, oh, wow, that's the future and whatever--this is the here and now. These are the vehiclesthat a lot of peopleare going to be actuallybuying and carryingtheir families around with. And that's what people aregoing to come to the autoshow for, so therearen't as many, maybe, really flashy presentationshere for us-- the press--but for the people who wantto come sit in the cars, they can still come do all that.Of course, what theshow is switching--it's going to be in June. This is the last DetroitAuto Show in winter. We've just been here for years. So it will be interesting, switching to June--see what that does,if the show getseven more exciting that way. There were a whole bunch ofreally cool cars and trucksthat we saw thisyear, and we weretalking about what we were goingto discuss in Talking Cars. And we obviously couldn't agreeon what was the best thing, but we narrowed itdown a little bit.So Jake, give usyour number one thingat this show that reallystands out to you.The number one thing--I mean, honestly, the KiaTelluride was somethingthat I think got a lot of--the crowd was prettyexcited about that.Again, we're seeing alot of these 3-row SUVs--Right.--real heart of the market, big family vehicles. And I think the Kianailed it, you know? It's going to be anexpensive price--I mean, relatively-- but they'regoing to put a lot of equipmenton it!There isn't cloth seats. They're all goingto have a V6 engine.Wow.Hearkens back to the days. They're all going tohave leather, and V6--It has a very niceinterior, but Ifeel like I sort of gottricked a little bit by the--we get some of thisinformation ahead of time,we get some of thephotos ahead of time--and Kia, to their credit, dida great job with their photos, making it look evenbigger, and burlier, and brawnier than it is.And they were hypingthat, and so itlooks like it has thesebig fenders and everything. When you get to it,it's really not--they want it to feel off-roady.And they even have thisoff-road course over there, where they're drivingthese modified Telluridesrides around this course. But the realityis, people aren'tgoing to take theirTelluride off road.I'm sorry.But--So I don't understandthe whole marketingfor that, becausemost people are justgoing to drive their familyaround town and go on trips!Buy the car that you want, and you also buy the image--Yeah.--but you don't necessarilyneed the hardwareto climb the mountain. It looks like a nice vehicle--no question about it.I feel like I got tricked alittle bit, because I'm like,oh, I thought it was going tolook a little more in my facethan this.I have to say, I totallyagree with you on the image. To me, I looked at theTelluride, and I thought, they're channelingtheir inner Land Rover.Actually, yeah.Because that's how it looks.Yeah, you're right. And they've got the luggagerack on the roof and everything.Even the way they havethe badges in the front--Oh, right.Yeah.I actually did kindof like that part.I thought it waspretty cool-looking.So Jake talkingabout the Telluride--what do you got cookingfor yourself for the show?Well, I mean, the Supra--we talked about this on aprevious episode, the ToyotaSupra.I was excited to see it.I had some hesitations about itbecause of so many shared partswith the BMW Z4.It definitely is veryinteresting to look at.It's got thesehuge rear fenders. It's got these bigfront air intakes. But it's still, especially whenI look at the rear of the car--and maybe because I alreadyknew it was based on the Z4--I think Z4, and itjust bothers me.Still, as before--So are you digging this,or you're not digging this?I'm going to reserve judgmentuntil I drive the car.OK.Because I've gotto drive it first. But still, Supras are supposedto have their own engine, and it's supposedto be its own car. They're supposed to be Toyotas. And this is not!You sat in it, right?I didn't get to sit in it.So here's the thing-- lasttime, we talked about the Z4--Right.--and you were like, that'skind of disappointingthere's a BMW engine in it.It's not just the engine. This is a BMW.And they talk a lot about thesoul of the Supra and whatnot--you get into it,you're in a BMW.You take away thesteering wheel--that's a Toyota steering wheel--all the switch gears--The shifter is a BMW.The info came in, and it'seven got that wireless car playthat BMW has.I mean, it is a BMW.And look-- that'snot a bad thing.BMW makes great cars.Right.But-- I have a bunch of friendswho are total enthusiasts. You don't race Toyotasfor a couple of yearswithout getting into thatgroup, and they were allwaiting for that Supra! And to be honestwith you, I believethe Lexus RC is more ofa Supra than that is.And not because it's--again, this number ofcylinders-- but it'slike it's truly Toyota. It's got the engine that, really, is just very precise, and sounds good, and just thatidea of Toyota precision--that's in there. And the other thing is--no manual transmissionfor the Supra, and thatbothers me a little bit.And I think yourenthusiast friends--I bet they're going tobe bothered by that, too.Well, yeah.Honestly, I'm reallysplit in between the twoof your guys' points.I'm so excited thatthere is a Supra.Right.And you've got to admit--Toyota is between arock and a hard place. They put out a Supra, and itdoesn't have an inline-six.People are going to kill it.So it's like, well, you could use the RC.It's got the V8,blah, blah, blah--If they had a sweet, normally aspirated V8,I don't think thatpeople would be upset. But I'm also going to cut Toyotaa little slack for not doinga manual transmission, because almost no carcompanies are doing manualtransmissions anymore. That doesn't mean it's right. That doesn't mean it'sright, but the majorityof Porsche sportscars are automatics. There isn't a Ferrari--a new Ferrari-- soldanymore with a manual, but on the other side ofthe ledger, here, is--I was at the press conference.I looked at all thepress materials. Not once did anyone fromToyota say the letters B, M, W.Right.It's not there. It's an inline-six cylinder, and that's all there--Nothing to see here. They didn't do anything. But here's the truth. Here's the truth-- is thatToyota, despite how large theyare and how muchmoney they have, they're outsourcing sports cars. They did it withSubaru, with the 86--they're doing it now, with BMW, with a Supra. They did mention thatthey're going to--this isn't theirend, they're goingto have more sports cars--I am hoping there isgoing to be an MR2.All I could say-- if you'regoing to outsource it--how about Lotus?Lotus would be a good way to go.But you've go toadmit-- the Toyota86 is a pretty good package. It is good.I mean, for what it's designedto do, I loved running the 86.Oh, me, too.Absolutely.So switching gears-- becausewe could do it automatically--Oh, my God.The next one on our listis the Volkswagen Passat.I wanted to get a betterlook at it before westarted doing our podcast.I looked at it,and I was like, isthat the Jetta or the Passat?I had to go backand look at that--There's lots of changes, right? There's a lot more horsepower--No.No, it's the samedrivetrain as before. Is it?No, no.They just slightlyrestyled the body. The interior looks likea regular Volkswagen. It looks like the Jetta! It's not unattractive. It's kind of handsome. It's kind of conservative, but it didn't reallylook like anything new.The only thing that Icould say about thisis that maybe theydid the right thing, because if you look atPassat, it's a nice car.The only issue I couldreally call about it--it's about reliability. So if you go andredesign the vehicle, and you change thepowertrain, and youchange all these things, what's going to happen?Reliability is going to plummet. So if you say, look, it's all new,but we're hard at worktrying to refine this stuffand fix the problems--current generationfacade-- if you can justmake it a little more reliable, you've got a good car.Right.Because the powertrain--certainly in the last Jettathat we tested--gets great fuel economy. They know how to produce. It's funny that somethinglike the Toyota Camryhas been redesigned to beso much more in your face, and more stylish, andthe facade is justgoing the opposite route.Sort of like the Audiroute, where you barelychange the style of the carfrom generation to generation. The difference is, thoseAudis already look fantastic. It'll be interesting, trying the new Passat, because the last fewVolkswagens that we've tested, they really lost some oftheir handling and steeringfeel, and their Europeantraits that we've alwaysliked about them.So we wrapped upthe Passat-- whatelse have we got going on here? The Ford Explorer! That a big-time car name.Real big deal. And the big news is,it's an all-new platform. It goes from a frontwheel drive vehicle, now, to a rear wheeldrive vehicle--a shared platform witha Lincoln Aviator. The funny thingabout the Explorer, though, is there's alot going on underneath. But the exteriorof the car, it'shard to tell it fromthe previous version. And that seems weird tome, and it wasn't evenVolkswagen and the Fordthing is, their designers--There is an alliancegoing on there. But I just thoughtthat, if you'regoing to completely redesigna vehicle, why wouldn't youmake it look more differentthan the previous one whenit already wasn't likeit was this amazinglystylish vehicle, right? If it was beautiful, and you'relike, oh, don't change a thing. But no, I mean--Explorer wasn't like it wasthe best-looking SUV out there,so why did theyleave it so close?I mean, we're seeing a trend. You go to Passat. You go to this car.You look at thatSubaru Forester. You're almost hard-pressedto see the differenceswithin that.We are seeing a fair amountof vehicles that are beingcompletely redesigned, but--maybe that's thevideos that we need.Maybe people are lookingat the old videosand trying to figureout the differencebetween the new and the old.Right.But they have afollowing, and theydon't want to mess with it.Because styling is suchan important factorfor a lot of people'sbuying decisions--Right.--they've got to be carefulthey don't alienate whatthey have with their audience. And we remember the1990s, which reallywas the big market forSUVs, and the Ford Explorerwas selling like crazy.Yeah.That was among thetop sellers for years. And there is so muchgoing on underneath. There's going to be an Explorerhybrid for the first time ever. There's an Explorer ST mode--a serious performanceversion, the most horsepower--and they're saying the fastestExplorer they've ever made.So there is a lot goingon with this vehicle.Yeah.And some of those FordV6 engines are powerful--Those V6 turbos, yeah. And they're really, reallysatisfying to drive. So from the Explorer toanother SUV-- oh, what a shock,an SUV--That's what everyone's buying!I could have 3 rows, and seat 7 people--Cadillac XT6.What do you guys think?Well, I was kind ofa little bored by it.You're used to Cadillacs beingvery flashy, and this one--especially from the side, from the side profile,it could be any other midsizethree-row SUV on the market. It does have a Cadillac grille, but it's not even that bigof a Cadillac grille. So I don't know.I don't think it'squite as catchyas Cadillac buyers are goingto expect it to look like.I mean it's basicallya Chevrolet Traverse.Right.It's basically what it is.A model that didwell, I'm assuming.Which, again, I'm notsaying is a bad thing.Right.So if you're a Cadillacbuyer, and you want to--You mean there'sa few out there? There are some out there--Sorry.--and you want tocarry around seven,or you want to have three rows--a lot of people are buyingthese Escalades, whichare way more than you mayneed, are extremely expensive--Not very efficient.--are not reliable, not efficient. So here is an optionwhere I've got the room.I've got the roomto carry everyoneI need to do in a muchmore efficient package. Now, does it have the flash? Is it as flashy asthe Lincoln Aviator? The Aviator has somuch more presence. That's got more appeal to it.And actually, goingback to the Explorer, the Explorer has got morepower, and the Explorerhas got a lot more interest.Right.So are the Cadillacbuyers going to be OK?Which is a very practicalminivan alternative,is really what it is.It will be an interesting test.Let's put it that way.Once again, walking the showfloor here, and coming overto our little makeupset for Talking Cars,I stopped by Cadillac.I looked at it.They all looked the same. All the XT seriesfrom Cadillac--I had to look at the backof the badge to see--Which one is which?Yeah.A lot of manufacturers aredoing that, but in some ways, they almost didn't do enough.Because, actually, look at someof the other product entries. They're a little bitmore interesting,in terms of thelight treatments--Right.--whereas the XT6 is like,oh, here's headlights.Right.The XT4, XT5, XT something--XT I don't know-- butit did not jump outat me as anythingnew-looking, although they'vegot the good stuff underneath.Right.So speaking ofmore than you need, let's talk about theRAM heavy duty trucks.Yeah.These things are monsters. It's hard to believe that everygeneration gets bigger, right?Well, with the towing capacity,it's over 35,000 pounds--Properly equipped.--properly equippedtowing capacity. With the diesel, over a thousand--I mean, it's big. It's powerful. The one interesting thing--going away from thepower for a second--but they actually said theywill be actually offering--drumbeat-- automatic emergencybraking forward-collisionwarning on a heavy duty truck. And that's great news.Which is great news.So there's really noreason not to have iton that classic truck. And they even wentout of their wayand said, yes, it will beoperational even if you tow.Right.So it's all available. It can be done. And it's availablein every trim line,so that was pretty important. Not necessarily thatpeople are buying, that tradesmen are always goingto option that vehicle up.My son delivers autoparts, and the vehiclethat he has deliverit is the moststripped down FordF-150 you've ever seen. But still, it's goodto know that youcan get automaticemergency brakingand forward-collisionwarning on any trim. And what is interestingabout that is,quite honestly, there'sa lot of people--there's fleets of these things. If you're a contractoror whatever, you might have peopledriving around these trucks. And if they're goingto be equipping these,look-- the number is out there. The data is out there. If you have automatic emergencybreaking and forward-collisionwarning, there will be less--it will pay for itself. So I could see a fleetmanager saying, OK, I'llget the cheap one.I don't need the leatheror whatever it is,but I'm going toput this stuff on,because it's going tomake dollars and cents.I think that's a great move. And for the people thataren't buying the fleetvehicles, the ones that arebuying the more higher trendversions--just like the RAM1500, these 2500s,3500s have justbeautiful interiors. That's the best in the business. And the company says there'smore sound insulation. The company says they'veimproved the ride--The high-tech features, the large touch screen.Yeah, the good news is that theyhaven't messed up the Uconnectsystem that they'veworked so much. You can get runningboards that comeflipping down when you hop in.The RAM is a very, very formidable truck.Even 1500 series. For the 2500s, let's justsay the rest of Detroit--the rest of the world--has got their workcut out for them.Yeah.So continuing a themeof Detroit muscle,we got to see a couplereally interesting sportscars, or muscle cars, here in Detroit--one of them being theFord Mustang Shelby GT500.What do you guystake on that one?I think it's awesome. They're saying, over 700 horsepower. It's a supercharged5.2-liter V8.They're saying it's themost powerful street-legalFord in history, and it hasthese huge front brakes. They're 16.5 inches, andthey are just gigantic. They basically fill up theentire carbon fiber wheel.I've never seenbrakes that gigantic. The other thing isthat it's comingwith a 7-speed dualclutch transmission, and I'm kind of torn onthat, because Mustangs alwayshave manual transmissions.Right.Especially these big, high horsepower Mustangs. And so this is abig switch for them, and I asked a Fordrepresentative,is there going to bea manual available. And he said, no, this is whatwe feel is best for the car. This is what's going tolet owners extract the mostperformance out ofit, because they don'thave to deal with a clutch. And he said, it's goingto be best for the track. But I always have aproblem when peopletalk about track, because--It's about driving enjoyment.Exactly.So maybe I'm hanging withthe wrong track day crowd. But the track days I go to?Just about every car hasa manual transmission.Even the Porsche 911 Turbos, the Porsche Caymans--those people couldhave the paddle shift, but they have the manual. Why?Because you getthe most enjoyment. You feel the best about--you're turning offtraction control. You're turning off stabilitycontrol on a track.Yes, you have ABS.You're trying to drivethe best you can drive, and if the car is doingeverything for you, includingshifting, you're not going toget that satisfaction of tamingthis high horsepower car. It's the differencebetween a numbers vehicle--Right.--and a vehicle that'sjust enjoyable to drive. And if it's aboutdriving enjoyment,yeah-- you kind ofwant to do it yourself.I think one otherinteresting thing about itis, again, high horsepower, most powerful ever,et cetera, et cetera. How is that possible?Because didn't theemission standardsmake it so cars can'thave horsepower anymore? It's just so funny whenyou come here to Detroit, and the automakers showit again and again--that in this environment, wherethe emissions are quite tight--Right.They're amazing. They are able to produce theseincredible performances timeand again. It's shocking, whatthey can do these days.Every time they say theycan't do it, then they do it.And they can make themsound awesome, too.Hit it out of the park.Right.My take on the Shelby was, yes, the horsepower is huge. It's awesome.I still really likethe basic Mustang GT,and just the GT350are incredible. It always blows my mindthat people want more.I mean, obviously--Chrysler, Dodgeare doing it with the Hellcat. There's alwaysthis, you want to bethe one person on theblock with the mosthorsepower or something.I think it's themanufacturers whowant to be the one on theblock with the most horsepower, and they're justflexing their muscles, and they're saying, look what we can do.Right.And it's impressive. And it worked, obviously, because wesaid 1,000foot-pounds of torque, which is exactly whatRAM wanted us to say.And also, it doeslook pretty cool, too.I mean, it is a prettycool-looking car.So another kind of esotericsports car that doeshave a manualtransmission-- the Subaru.Let's see if I get this--the Subaru STI S209.That was revealedhere in Detroit.Really hotly anticipated bythe Subaru crowd out there.Yeah.You want to go first? What was it?200 lucky owners--Yeah.--might have theopportunity to buy one.The whole S209-- thewhole thing with that--is that there have been specialeditions of the STI before. This is the firsttime that we'regetting one in North America. So that's kind of a cool thing. And yeah, it's got morehorsepower, and betterhandling-- what was it, 341?341 horsepower, yeah.A little more horsepower. The only thing that I kept onthinking when I'm watching thisis, it's still of the lastgeneration Impreza platform, with the older 2.5-liter engine. And the new platform, the new Impreza,is actually really, really impressive.Right.And the fact thatthey haven't taken--not only haven'ttaken the sportscars, the WRX and the STI--onto that new platformyet, but now they'recoming out with like this Halovehicle on a platform thatwas introduced--I think it was like 2012.OK.So think of it as the lasthurrah for this generationof STI, right?Kind of like this is the lasthurrah for the Detroit AutoShow in winter, Subarusaid, we'll bring it,this STI S209, lasthurrah for that car.I think it's reallycool that they'redoing it because we haven'tgotten these special editions. It has a pretty nice interior. It has a suede steeringwheel and suede seats, and you know it'sgoing to be awesome. It's going to be anamazing car to drive.Yes, you can get horsepower outof WRXs and STIs on your own.You can do that, but this isfrom the factory, and it's--Says the guy whomodified his Miyata.Yes, and I screwed it upwhen I modified the Miyata.Exactly.But it's from thefactory, and also, itcould be a collector'sitem down the road. For some people, it's going tobe a really cool car to have.If you want to be thattrack driver, whatwe were talking about--get yourself an STI,modify it yourself, you'll get over341 horsepower, youcould buy a suedesteering wheel, and you could make it your own.And that, I think, is a lessexpensive and more interestingway to go.Will you buy me asuede steering wheel? We'll talk about it later.OK.Subaru, no doubt, willhave no problems sellingevery single one of them.So Mike, youmentioned that this isgoing to be the lastwinter Detroit Auto Show.Right.Can you tell us what we'regoing to expect to seenext time we come to Detroit?Yeah, so it's going to bein June, going forwards. That's something they're trying. And my guess is, it's going togenerate more excitement-- moreexcitement, probablyfor the manufacturers, because everyone doesn't haveto come in the middle of winter. The journalists don't have tocome in the middle of winter. But forget us.Let's talk about thepeople who matter--the regular consumerswho come to theseshows, to sit in the cars.My understandingis, there's goingto be a bunch ofdisplays outside as well, driving things for themto be able to do outsidethat they can't doright now, because it'sin the middle of winter. That's exactly what amanufacturer's rep told mewhen I asked, what do you knowabout the show moving to June? And they said, we'rehoping for better weather. They said they're probablygoing to hold backsome debuts that you mightnormally see in New York City.Yeah.So New York City, it's kindof like an early spring show.So maybe themanufacturer could say,we're going to be introducingour next model year's car,so I guess that willbe the 2021s or--Well, it makes sense, becausethink about the January show, right? We're January of 2019.If you're choosing a 2020model that doesn't come outuntil the fall,do you really wantto show your cars that early? That's a long ways away.Because basically, whatyou're doing, especiallyif you're redesigninga vehicle, it's like, hey, don't buy that car inthe showroom for a year.Wait until the next one comes, because it's so much better. It's a weird message. So it does make moresense to wait until June.So doing it in June, hopefully, the weather'sgoing to be better.Bring your suntan lotion.Well, that's going to do it forthis episode of Talking Cars.As always, checkout the show notesfor more information onthe cars or the topicsthat we talked about. Thanks so much for tuning in.We'll see you next week.It sounds like the TIEfighters from Star Wars.Yeah, it does!Yeah, I totally get that. And we're back.Geeks 'R Us.OK.\n"
