M1 iMac — Buy Now or Wait for M1 Max iMac Pro

The all-new M1 iMac has it all, unbelievable performance, terrific display, complete redesign, and colors, so many colors. But could you do with more? No, not more colors, but more ram, more storage, more cores, more redesign, even a bigger display.

Well, I'm here to help you decide whether you should buy the new M1 hotness now, now, now, or wait for the potential M1X hotness that could be coming up next. The current M1 iMac is available now, with prices starting at $1299 for the base model 24-inch iMac and $1799 for the holdover Intel 27-inch Mac. However, if you're looking for a higher-end option with more performance, you may want to wait on a potential M1X iMac Pro.

The current M1 iMac finally comes with touch ID on the Apple Magic Keyboard, just eight short years after it was first introduced on the iPhone and five years after it was introduced on the MacBook Pro. However, there is still no face ID option available on the Mac. If the option for touch ID is more than biometric enough for you or if you happen to prefer it, then go ahead and get the M1 iMac.

On the other hand, if you do prefer face ID and are willing to wait and see if the M1X iMac Pro will be able to incorporate this feature, then go ahead and wait. The new base model 24-inch iMac starts at $1299, which is clearly targeted at the consumer market. However, the holdover Intel 27-inch Mac starts at $1799, which is more prosumer but quickly escalates to full-on pro-level pricing for that extra performance.

In terms of ports, the current M1 iMac has just two USB4 ports, which combine USB-C and Thunderbolt 3. You can step up to two USB4 ports and two USB-C ports, which means the second two don't have Thunderbolt 3, but that's it, that's all. The hope is that a potential M1X iMac Pro would have more pro-level ports, at least four full-on USB4 ports with Thunderbolt fully operational, maybe more.

One of the biggest compromises on the current M1 iMac is ports. The entry-level model has just two USB4 ports, which can be a limitation for some users. However, if you're willing to wait and see what a potential M1X iMac Pro would offer in terms of ports, it could be worth considering.

In addition to the current M1 iMac, there is also the holdover Intel 27-inch Mac, which starts at $1799. This model offers more performance than the current M1 iMac but comes with a higher price tag. Apple could hold the line on prices for the theoretical M1X 32-inch iMac Pro or they could bump them up slightly to pay down whatever new technologies, like mini LED, they end up including.

Another thing worth considering is storage. The current M1 iMac is capped at two terabytes of storage, which may not be enough for some users. However, if you don't think you'll need more than 16 gigabytes and 2 terabytes for your iMac, then go ahead and get the M1 iMac now. But if you really want more, especially if you want much, much more, you'll wanna wait on a potential M1X iMac Pro.

One of the biggest advantages of waiting for a potential M1X iMac Pro is that it could offer more performance and features than the current M1 iMac. The current M1 iMac finally comes with touch ID on the Apple Magic Keyboard, just eight short years after it was first introduced on the iPhone and five years after it was introduced on the MacBook Pro. However, there is still no face ID option available on the Mac.

If money matters and you want an entry-level iMac, you'll want the M1, which is available now. But if money and time are no object and you're just lusting after a higher-end iMac, you'll wanna wait on a potential M1X iMac Pro.

In conclusion, whether or not to buy the current M1 iMac or wait for a potential M1X iMac Pro depends on your individual needs and budget. If you don't need more than 16 gigabytes and 2 terabytes of storage, then go ahead and get the M1 iMac now. But if you really want more, especially if you want much, much more, it may be worth waiting for a potential M1X iMac Pro.

2021.The new M1 iMac had an all-new design, basically a giant iPad Pro design. It's thin, it's flat, andyes, it still has the chin, just no Apple logo on it anymore. And that's basically wherethe entire computer boardand speaker system now lives. It also comes in white, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple, just not black, not even on the bezels. Those are now off white. The M1X iMac Pro couldfollow the exact same design, even though many, many people are hopingfor just no chin, but we'll see. Also, for black, or at leastspace gray with black bezels, because Apple seems to keepcolors just constrainedto consumers, so if youwant those bright colorsand don't care a whit about white bezels,go with the M1 Mac right now.If you don't care about colorsand are hoping beyond hopefor an even more Prodisplay XDR-style design, then go ahead and wait ona theoretical M1X iMac Prosometime later this year. The M1 iMac has a bigger 24-inch,4.5K, retina high density,P2 wide-gamut LCD display, and it's legit one of thebest all-in-one displaysin the business. It's better than most displays period. But a lot of pros are hoping, are yearningfor something even bigger and better.A 32-inch 6K mini LED display, like what the new iPad Prohas just on Hulk serum. It uses local dimmingzones for deeper blacks, brighter whites, much higher contrast, and closer to full-onhigh dynamic range, HDR.If 24 inches is more than enoughfor you and your workspace, then go ahead and grabthe M1 iMac any time. But if you need orsimply want more, again, potentially Pro display XDR size more,thEn you'll need to waitand see what Apple doeswith the higher-end iMacs. The M1 iMac is Apple'sfirst-generation Silicon, based on the same IP andarchitecture as the A14 Bionic. It's an ultra low power system on a chip, but it's got just about thebest single core performancein the business, especiallywith the active cooling systemthat lets it run full-out foras long as you probably need. It's just so far beyond theold entry-level Intel iMacsthat it is not even funny. But it's the ultra low power version, and that means, yes, there will likely bea higher power option,an M1X, or whatever Appleends up calling the chip setthat adds even moreperformance and graphics coresfor even better multi-core performance.Maybe even lets the single core runjust a little bit faster, as well. How many more coresremains an open question, but rumors are pointingto anywhere from 12 to 16,so one and a half to double, either of which is reallygonna shake things upwhen it comes to multi-core.If industry-leadingsingle-core speed for daysis enough for you,the M1 iMac will certainlybe enough for you,but if you're hoping for somethingthat's even more massively multi-core,you'll want to wait for whatever it isthe higher-end M1X chip set brings. One of the best parts of theM1 iMac is the unified memory,a big old pool of eightgigabytes or 16 gigabytesslapped right on the packageand shared between the CPU,GPU, and neural engine, combined with everythingfrom memory compressionto ultra fast swap, I mean eight gigabytesis still absolutely eight gigabytes, but it's the very besteight gigabytes it can be.Same for 16 gigabytes, especiallywhen it comes to graphicsbecause embedded graphicshave usually been far, farmore ram constrained and bottlenecked, but those are the only optionsfor the entry-level iMac.A theoretical M1X iMac Pro, though, well, we're all just hopingit'll go to 32 gigabytesor 64 gigabytes to matchwhat the old Intels offered.Same with the storage capacity.Instead of being capped at two terabytes, the hope is that'll alsomirror the old Intel modelsand go all the way to fourterabytes or eight terabytes, which just, yes, please. If you don't think you'll need morethan 16 gigabytes and twoterabytes for your iMac,go ahead and get the M1 iMac now.But if you really want more, especially if you want much, much more, you'll wanna wait on an M1X iMac Pro.One of the biggest compromiseson the current M1 iMac is ports. The entry-level modelhas just two USB4 ports, which combine USB-C and Thunderbolt 3.You can step that up to twoUSB4 ports and two USB-C ports, which means the second twodon't have Thunderbolt theoption for two more USB-Care all the ports you need,or you're just happyto live that hub life, then go ahead and get the M1 iMac now.But if you're willing towait, four full-on USB4 ports, maybe more, could be yours witha theoretical M1X iMac Pro.The new M1 iMacs finally, finally come with the optionfor touch ID on the Apple magic keyboard, just eight short yearsafter coming to the iPhoneand five after coming to the MacBook Pro.I am not salty about this at all.Still no face ID, though, not even four years aftercoming to the iPhone, and I am salty about that. Now, maybe a theoretical and M1X iMac Prosticks with touch ID, butif there is any hope at allfor face ID on a Mac and soon, that just might be our next best shot.If the option for touch IDis more than biometric enough for youor you happen to prefer it,go ahead and get the M1 iMac.But if you do prefer faceID and are willing to waitand see if the M1X iMacPro will be able to see, then go ahead and wait. The new base model M124-inch iMac starts at 1299,which is clearly targetedat the consumer market. The holdover Intel 27-inchiMac starts at 1799,which is more prosumer, but quickly escalatesto full-on pro-level pricingfor that extra including, or theycould have options with both. We'll just have to wait and see.My always, always advice is to waitas long as you possibly can to buy, then buy when you absolutely need to buyand then just enjoy the hellout of whatever it is youdo buy with no regretsbecause there will always be something newand something next.If money matters and youwant an entry-level iMac,you'll want the M1, available now,but if money and time are no objectand you're just lustingafter a higher-end iMac,you'll wanna wait on apotential M1X iMac Pro.Now, if you still can'tdecide, why not leave itto machine
