Windows 8 Might Suck

**The Evolution of Computer Enhancement**

There was a time in my life that the only easy way to enhance your computer was to walk into a store and pick an item off the shelf if it wasn't there, you couldn't get it. We now live in an era where we can download software willy-nilly and in many cases, we could use any operating system and any platform to do what formerly we could only easily do on one platform - Windows. However, with the advancements in technology, our needs have changed, and Windows is no longer the only option.

**The Rise of Gaming on the PC**

If you were a hardcore gamer and there was an operating system that was optimized for the thing that you wanted to do, so yes, there still is a place for gaming on the PC. However, it's not just about the PC; we also have console gaming and mobile gaming options. These alternatives offer us a similar experience as playing games on Windows, but with more convenience and accessibility. Whether it's streaming games or using other platforms to play games, the choice is ours.

**The Changing Landscape of Computing**

I think the biggest challenge Windows has today and it's had this for some time, but certainly as it rolls into the future, is living in a world where we just don't need Windows anymore. I could live without Microsoft, and still get things done. This isn't about one company or another; I could go open a web page and use a service that would give me the same experience as I would have experienced on software that only ran on Windows a decade ago. However, this isn't happening the same way these days.

**The Internet's Impact on Microsoft**

Microsoft knew that the internet was going to be a problem, but they're moving as fast as they possibly can. If I need to create a Word-compatible document, I'm more inclined to open up Google Docs than fire up Microsoft Word. Even though I have it installed on my desktop machine, the convenience of using online services like Google Docs is too great to ignore. This is effectively what these online services do for me; they provide an alternative to Windows without requiring me to use it.

**The Value of Windows**

I know you could argue that Windows still has value; I'm not saying that Windows doesn't have value. You're arguing a completely different point. I'm saying it's going to struggle in a day and age when the world just doesn't need Windows anymore. You don't need Windows if you can use another operating system, whether it's Mac OS, Linux, Android, or iOS.

**Microsoft's Challenge**

The biggest hurdle Microsoft knows they have is that we just don't need Windows as much as we used to. We've got so many options these days; why do we need Windows? Is it really going to be that much better than what we've experienced elsewhere? What's going to be the selling point for Windows? These are questions that Microsoft needs to answer if they want to remain relevant in the market.

**Staying Positive**

It's kind of sad, really, when you think about it. Microsoft lost a lot of traction in the marketplace, but I don't count them out. They're doing some awesome things; they still have a chance. As someone who loves Microsoft software apps on my iPhone, I don't hate anyone at Microsoft.

**The Future of Computing**

Hopefully, this article has given you a sense of what's to come for computing. The path is uncertain, and we'll just have to see where it takes us. One thing's for sure; it won't be the same as it was 10 years ago.
