The Joy of Making Drunken Noodles at Home
I still remember the time I was in a restaurant and ordered drunken noodles, and after trying to recreate them at home, they turned out incredibly delicious. In this article, I will share with you my recipe for making these tasty noodles from scratch.
To start, you'll need some large or wide rice noodles. You can easily find these in any large Asian store, or even use any kind of rice noodle or linguine as a substitute if needed. Once you've got your noodles, pour hot water over them and let them sit for about 10-15 minutes until they become soft.
While the noodles are cooking, it's time to make our ever-so-tasty sauce. To do this, combine two tablespoons of oyster sauce, two tablespoons of dark soy sauce (if you don't have the dark, you can just use regular), a couple of tablespoons of fish sauce, a few tablespoons of brown sugar (you can also use white sugar if preferred), and finally, a couple of tablespoons of water. Mix everything together with your spoon until well combined.
Now, let's talk about the origins of drunken noodles. There are various stories behind how this dish came to be, but I'll just share one of them for fun. Apparently, some people claim that a guy came home drunk and whipped up these noodles as an impromptu snack. While I don't know if this story is entirely true, it's certainly a popular myth surrounding the dish. Others say that drunken noodles are simply a perfect remedy for a hangover – a "thirsty get" to quench your cravings.
Moving on to the cooking process, heat some oil in a pan over medium-high heat (or a wok, if you have one). You can use any type of protein you like, such as beef, chicken, prawns, or lamb. In this recipe, we'll be using about three-quarters of a pound of thinly sliced beef. Add a small chopped onion and four cloves of garlic to the pan, along with some red bell pepper and hot pepper flakes (about a teaspoon). Stir-fry everything for a few minutes until the vegetables are tender.
Next, add your protein of choice to the pan and stir it around for just a few minutes, making sure it's cooked through. Now, it's time to add our noodles to the pan, along with the incredibly delicious sauce we made earlier. Pour the sauce over the noodles and gently toss everything together until they're fully coated in that savory goodness.
Finally, garnish your dish with some fresh basil (or Thai basil if you have it), and feel free to add in any additional vegetables you like – broccoli, bok choy, or even fresh chives from your garden. Give the dish one last quick toss to distribute everything evenly, and voila! Your drunken noodles are ready to be devoured.
The finished result is truly heavenly – those noodles are cooked to perfection, the beef is tender, and that sauce... well, it's just the perfect combination of savory and sweet flavors. I can see why people would want to eat these noodles even when drunk (although I wouldn't recommend overindulging in them). So go ahead, give this recipe a try, and enjoy the delicious taste of homemade drunken noodles!
