Mac Mini - New higher-end model may be coming soon

Apple May Be Killing Off the Last Intel Mac Mini Soon: A New Report

A new report from Bloomberg's Mark German suggests that Apple is planning to release a high-end Mac mini in the next several months. This new Mac mini would feature a new system-on-chip (SoC) made by Apple, currently there is a Mac mini with Apple's own M1 chip that is the same chip used in the iMac and iPad Pro.

According to German, Apple kept the Intel version of the Mac mini around for use as a software development machine and a video editing machine. This new Mac mini would serve the same function with a new M1X chip. The report also states that the familiar Mac mini would have an updated design, but it's unclear what kind of changes to expect.

The original Mac mini was designed to look like an iPhone icon, while the Intel version looks similar but with some differences. The 2010 model was shorter and wider than the original, still had a disk drive, and still had a lot of ports on the back, including four USB-A ports, an SD card reader, mic in headphone jack, mini display port, HDMI, FireWire 800, and Ethernet.

The new M1 Mac minis look similar from the outside but have a different story when it comes to the back. They have two USB-A ports, one HDMI port, a headphone jack, Ethernet, and two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports. While this is a good start, it could use more connectivity. The Intel model has four Thunderbolt 3 ports on the external.

It's unclear if Apple will keep the familiar spherical design of the Mac mini or introduce new design cues from the new iMacs. It's also possible that the new higher-end Mac mini could be physically smaller due to Apple's chips being designed for high performance and low power consumption.

The German report states that the new M1X Mac mini will have more ports than the current model. An older report from German said there would be four ports instead of two, which one would think was referring to the Thunderbolt ports and not the USB-A ports. This would be a welcome change for those who don't want to buy a dock to get more ports on their Mac.

The timing of the new Mac mini fits well within Apple's timeline to transition away from Intel, which they announced in 2020 with a completion date around two years later. There was also a report from April by Nikkei Asia that said Apple's next chip had entered mass production, with the chip being named as the M2 (whatever the final name is). It makes sense that this new higher-end Mac mini would be powered by this chip and that it would phase out Intel chips first.

There's other Mac news to expect. The new chip from the Mac mini will also be in the new MacBook Pros, which could be released in the third quarter of this year. However, the iPhone event should come first for more information on that.

disk drive the back was still full of ports by the way four usb-a ports an sd card reader mic in headphone jack mini display port hdmi firewire 800 and ethernet in 2011 we got the mac mini without a ethernet and two thunderbolt slash usb 4 ports it's a good start but it could use more connectivity the intel model is similar but with four thunderbolt 3 ports on the external looks of the mac mini i'm not sure if apple will do away with that familiar spherical design maybe the mac mini could borrow some design cues from the new imacs perhaps even dabble in colors it is possible that the new
