If you're in the market for a brand new device because it's 2024, I'd advise against getting an older generation of a formally premium product just because it's cheaper. I mean, if there is a kind of threshold that you want to go and stick to, right, maybe a 2-3-year-old device. I would kind of gravitate towards going for that because not only will you still feel like you're getting a premium product, but you'll also get the latest and greatest, and you'll be able to use some of those nice accessories like the Magic Keyboard and the Apple Pencil.
But, on the other hand, if you can find an iPad Pro for sub $800, whether it's the M1 or the M2, I say jump on that one because 120Hz promotion alone might make it worth it. You also get a brighter screen, you get Thunderbolt, you get Face ID over Touch ID, and the speakers are much louder and more robust. And let's be real, just 120Hz promotion alone is enough of a reason to kind of stick with the older generation even though it is a more premium product versus the M2 iPad Air.
The only reason you would really want to go over there versus an iPad Pro is going to be battery life because when it comes to a brand new device, the battery life is going to be amazing, and then the M2 iPad Air on the battery front will be even better because it's not pushing a mini LED display and it's not pushing 120Hz. You're still getting a big size battery in that iPad Air versus a used iPad Pro, you don't really know what you're getting yourself into.
If the previous owner really took care of the battery, like for me I didn't take care of my M1 iPad Pro battery life whatsoever because I don't know, I just always had the screen on, always had it plugged in, never put it in low power mode, and I kind of just ran through that battery pretty harshly. Now it only gets three to maybe four hours of battery life in total versus the iPad Air should give you 10 to 12 hours of continuous playback time on that battery life.
So, that would be the only real reason, and maybe if you want to use the Apple Pencil Pro, that's why I would gravitate towards that. But otherwise, if you trust where it's coming from, and if you're okay with the battery life not being as good as a brand new battery in an iPad Air, then I think the iPad Pro is going to be an absolute bargain.
For instance, my M1 iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil 2 I sold it for $800 with everything on there, even a screen protector. Versus for an M2 iPad Air that's going to be $800 alone without any accessories so you know scour eBay, scour Facebook Marketplace go to Apple's refurbished website because even their refurbish section does have some decent deals although if you want to get the absolute best bang for your buck I would definitely recommend using getting a used one from like said Facebook Marketplace, eBay or whatever a third-party portal that you can find.
That's just my two cents. The best thing is finding that sweet spot between 1 year to 3 years old in terms of the age of the device going to that iPad Pro and then just seeing if you're able to find a good monetary value overall for an older iPad Pro because I still think an older iPad Pro is going to be better than an M2 iPad Air.
Did you guys pick up a brand new iPad Air? Are you looking to get a used iPad Pro? What kind of situation are you in when it comes to your iPad? Let me know in the comment below. And if you made it to the end, leave a little dolphin in the comments below so I know you made it to the end.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enso with the release of the brand new M2 iPad Air it kind of put me in this bucket or in this scenario that I wanted to answer which was should you buy the budget version of a brand new device or by an older generation of a formerly premium device because that's exactly the situation that we're in right now right the M2 iPad Air is a great bargain for a brand new device in the iPad lineup but should you go out and get a 2018 iPad Pro or an M1 iPad Pro or even an M2 iPad Pro which might be even cheaper than the cheapest M2 iPad Air and get a little bit more in terms of Hardware because these devices now are getting to the point where they're only getting better on an incremental basis so maybe getting an M2 iPad Pro with Thunderbolt and face ID and promotion at a lower price point of a brand new M2 iPad Air could be a better bargain even though it is an older device so without further Ado let's kind of talk about that and also compare these two devices I'm going to be using an M1 iPad Pro to compare to the M2 iPad air but most of these things I'm I'm going to speak about are in regards to any iPad Pro 2018 and newer but let's get into it so let's quickly talk about all the hardware differences that we see between maybe an older iPad Pro and then the brand new M2 iPad Air so the first thing you're going to notice is that these are relatively identical from a form factor and a footprint standpoint the only visual difference that you're going to see between an iPad Pro from 2018 or newer and the brand new M2 iPad Air is if you turn it to the back you do get some different colorways for the iPad Air lineup like you get the blue color way the staright versus you just get Space gray or silver on the iPad IP Ad Pro and then also you do have the camera bump on the back now if you have the 2018 iPad Pro you still only get one camera but with any of the other iPad pros from 2019 to 2022 you have the dual camera set up with the camera cut out and things like that that does make it look a little bit different on the rear of the iPad Pro but on the front side it looks pretty identical and then if you go around the sides you do get the touch ID sensor so it's a bigger lock button on the actual iPad Air versus face ID which is in there so the lock button is a little smaller you have a different amount of speaker grills I believe you get more speaker grills on the iPad Air even the speakers are better on the iPad Pro but visually you're pretty much just looking at the same thing they're both 12.9 in displays they both have the same size bezels the thickness and the weight and the dimensions are all relatively identical because in my opinion the M2 iPad Air is just a recycled 2018 iPad Pro chassis that they decided to kind of spray paint essentially in different colors and call it the new M2 iPad Air so then let's talk about actual spec differences in what you're getting right so with the old iPad Pros you still get promotion on any level the reason I recommend that at least the M1 iPad Pros because you do get many LED in the larger models so in the 2021 and 2022 iPad Pros you get that mini LED display and PR motion and I believe that that's probably the biggest headliner and the biggest difference and what you were paying the premium for going from the iPad Air to the iPad Pro 120 HZ promotion if you aren't holding them side by side and you've never experienced 120 HZ promotion you're not really going to want to yearn for it or you're not going to really want to want it but if you have had 120 HZ promotion before and then you go back down to 60 HZ and an LCD display or an IPS panel you do kind of see the difference right you get used to it really quickly like it's not a night and day difference you're still using iPad OS and it's still very fluid on both of them but you do notice a a little bit almost of like a lag or it just takes a little bit longer to maybe move between screens or open up applications versus on the mini LED 120 HZ Pro motion it is like butter it's probably the best display you're ever going to get on any iPad or any display or any touchscreen display for that matter so I would say that that's one of the biggest Headliners of the differences in terms of on the iPad Pro and the M2 iPad Air you just get a much better display in terms of color accuracy in terms of technology in terms of brightness and then again the 120 HZ promotion and then another big difference if you are going to the pro model or used pro model is that you do get a thunderbolt port on the actual iPad Pro and I believe this is for the M1 and M2 iPad Pro the older iPad Pros like the 2018 the a12x and the a12z still have a regular USBC port or USB 3 Port which gives you 10 gbt of transfer speeds which means it's still the same as iPad air but if you're looking at the M1 and M2 iPad Pros you do get a thunderbolt port on there which gives you up to 40 gigs of data transfer speeds which does really help from an efficiency standpoint when are you are transferring data versus the M2 iPad Air so some other smaller differences that you're going to notice from an M2 iPad Air to some other iPad pros from the 2018 to the 2022 era is going to be the selfie camera placement so like I mentioned earlier you do get face ID on all iPad pros from 2018 and newer versus getting Touch ID on the iPad Airs now me personally I prefer face ID over Touch ID you know 99 out of 100 times but that's just personal preference and something that I'm used to but then also with that selfie camera they moved it to the actual landscape orientation on the M2 iPad Air versus on any iPad Pro from 2018 to 2022 it is in the portrait mode variation so when you do FaceTime or you are on a zoom call on your iPad Pro it does give you kind of this weird scenario where you're kind of looking off to the side and you aren't really centered I know they tried to do some stuff with software like Center Stage to make it look like you were in the center but it still looked very wonky so on the M4 iPad Pro they moved it over to the landscape orientation and they did the same thing for the M2 iPad Air and then I quickly want to talk about some compatibility in terms of accessories and what you're able to do so both of these iPads have the same exact form factor and they use the pin connector so what that means is that most accessories for the older iPad Pros will work with your M2 iPad Air so directly from Apple both the M2 iPad Air and the older iPad Pros work with the magic keyboard of old they do not work with the M4 magic keyboard but it'll work with any magic keyboard from 2019 to 2022 and it works extremely well right it works exactly the same you can get it for $350 for the larger model unfortunately that's still the price although you can find it on probably Amazon for 280 or 290 it's still brand new and of course you can find them use for much cheaper but then when it comes to the apple pencil situation this is where it gets a little bit interesting so on the new M2 iPad Air it only works with the new Apple pencil Pro because it does have hover on there and then also you do get to be able to use a USBC apple pencil which I believe is $70 or $80 directly from Apple versus on the older iPad Pros it only works with the apple pencil 2 which Apple still sells brand new for $13 $30 but then also it does work with the USBC apple pencil as well so if you want to use the new Apple pencil Pro specifically with the squeeze gestures and the gyroscope and find my you're going to need to get an M2 iPad Air because it does not work with the older iPad Pro Models and Apple's saying it's because of the magnets and the selfie camera and where that placement is and things like that but when in all reality it really is probably Apple just you know making you need to upgrade in order to use this newer apple pencil which does give you some nice benefits overall and that's another thing to consider that the only other iPad Pro that has hover is the M2 iPad Pro so if you want to get the hover feature and get an older iPad Pro unfortunately you're not going to be able to do that it only works with the M2 iPad Pro and it obviously also works with the M2 iPad Air because it does have that M2 Chip built in there and I believe that's a perfect segue into talking about the internal specs of what we're dealing with and how much faster the iPad Air is because it is rocking the M2 Chip inside of the iPad Air so like I said this is where it gets relatively interesting because it looks like you know iPad pros from 2018 to 2022 they've retained their value extremely well even the a12x 2018 iPad Pro if you want to get that 12.9in iPad Pro you still can probably spend $450 to $500 from eBay or Facebook Marketplace or even refurbished if you find it from Apple directly although the 2018 one doesn't really show up in the refurbish section anymore but that is something to consider that those iPad Pros do retain a lot of value and they're still relatively powerful even though they don't have an M1 or M2 Chip but when it does come to the speed the M2 iPad Air should be a little bit faster than the a12x the a12z the M1 and maybe even the M2 iPad Pro although from the testing that we've seen the M2 iPad Pro is still relatively quicker than the M2 iPad Air and we'll touch on that a little bit later but if you just want pure and raw speed and you want the latest and greatest then yes the M2 iPad Air will give you probably 15% boost in performance on the CPU side and probably 20 to 25% boost on the GPU side compared to something like the M1 iPad Pro but again if you're not using it for those kind of 5% tasks like exporting 4K footage and Luma Fusion or using Affinity photo or developing games and rendering you know high quality images and 3D renderers then at the end of the day the experience is going to be one to one in my opinion so I would probably go for a cheaper iPad Pro just because you do get the promotion and you do get the Thunderbolt and you do get everything on top of that and it just is a more premium device to begin with versus the M2 iPad air but another advantage that the M series iPad Pros even the old ones have is that if you find one that's a 1 tby or 2 terab model now these are going to be a little bit more expensive even in the secondhand Market you will be spending probably $1,000 on these because it is a lot of storage but you do get the ability to get 16 gigs of ram versus on the M2 iPad Air even if you do spec it up to the most storage that you have they will not give you 16 gigs of RAM so if you're able to find an M1 iPad Pro a 1 tbyte version at a decent price maybe even an $800 price point then that one's going to be much faster from a CPU and GPU performance side because you do have an additional 8 gigs of RAM to make it 16 on the iPad Pro versus the iPad Air doesn't even give you that option even at the most expensive price point so at the end of the day what should you gravitate towards right it's again that same question that goes through should I get the budget version of a brand new device because it is 2024 aied or do I go and get an older generation of a formally premium product and in my opinion there is kind of like this threshold that you want to go and stick to right maybe a 2 three-year-old device I would kind of gravitate towards because not only is going to still feel premium and still have the latest and greatest and still work with some of those nice accessories like the magic keyboard and the apple pencil but you're still going to get at least three to four maybe even 5 years of software updates now if you go all the way down to the 2018 iPad Pro even though yes it still works fine like my wife still has the 11-in 2018 iPad Pro and it works perfectly for what she needs right she uses it for Pinterest and as a baby monitor and just surfing Safari and looking up random stuff she's not doing anything intense on there but there will come a time where iPad OS 18 or maybe iPad OS 19 will not be supported by those 2018 iPad pros and then you're kind of in a little bit of a pickle so in my opinion for this scenario right now if you're able to find an iPad Pro for sub 800 whether it is the M1 or the M2 I say jump on that then just seeing if you're able to find a good monetary value overall for an older iPad Pro because I still think an older iPad Pro is going to be better than an M2 iPad air but that's just what I'm thinking let me know in the comment down below what you think did you guys pick up a brand new iPad Air are you looking to get a used iPad Pro what kind of situation are you in when it comes to your iPad let me know in the comment down below and if you made it to the end leave a little dolphin in the comments down below so I know you made it to the end and if you guys want to watch more videos like this one click on one of these right here and until next time I'm Fernando and I'm out here everybody peace\n"
