A Massive Upgrade! - 2022 ASUS ROG Strix Scar 15 Review (i9-12900H, RTX 3070 Ti, 240Hz 1440p)
**A Closer Look at the New Asus Laptop**
In this review, we'll take a closer look at the new Asus laptop that's been making waves in the tech world. With its powerful CPU and GPU, solid display, and impressive cooling system, this laptop is sure to impress even the most discerning users.
One of the standout features of this laptop is its noise level. When in turbo mode, it drops from 49 decibels to under 42, making it significantly quieter than most high-end laptops from last year. This is achieved by dropping the GPU power, which can impact performance slightly, but still more than enough for 1440p gaming. However, if you're planning to use this laptop for heavy gaming or demanding tasks, we would recommend avoiding the quiet profile.
On the other hand, the performance mode is ideal for users who want high-performance without the noise. With a relatively low decibel level of 32.5 during a multi-threaded stress test, this laptop takes the crown as one of the quietest performance laptops we've ever tested. The improvements in thermals and noise are impressive, considering it's the same chassis as last year's model.
**Design and Features**
One thing that's worth noting is that the laptop still uses a lot of power, and heat needs to go somewhere. To mitigate this, make sure not to close the intake vents on the bottom of the laptop, as they will blow hot air out the sides. The laptop is also pretty easy to open up, with just a few ribbon cables to keep an eye on. Additionally, there are more options for upgrading and customizing this laptop, such as replacing the memory (up to 64GB), swapping out the SSD, or adding Wi-Fi.
**Software and Battery Life**
Asus has marketed support for Gen 4 SSDs as a feature, and they did use one in this model. However, it only performed average at best in the PC Mark 8 storage benchmark. The battery life of the laptop is also quite good, lasting around seven hours in our lighter test. While not spectacular compared to some other laptops on the market, it's still respectable.
**Speakers and Display**
The speakers are fine for a laptop, but they're no substitute for a dedicated gaming headset. On the other hand, the quad HD display is a major highlight of this laptop, offering bright and vibrant colors that will make your content look stunning.
**Conclusion**
Overall, we're impressed with the new Asus laptop, combining powerful CPU and GPU performance with a solid cooling system and impressive display. While there are some areas for improvement, such as chassis design and battery life, it's clear that Asus has put a lot of thought into creating a well-rounded machine. With its competitive pricing and upcoming AMD-based laptops on the horizon, we recommend waiting to see how those models perform before making a purchase.
**Additional Features**
The laptop also features Nvidia's new battery boost feature, which may improve its battery life slightly. However, we haven't had time to properly test it yet.
One thing that did strike us was the lack of thinner bezels and a webcam on this model. With some newer laptops featuring these upgrades, it would have been nice to see Asus include them as well. Additionally, a better SSD performance would be welcome, especially at this price point.
Overall, while not perfect, this laptop is sure to please even the most discerning users. We can't wait to see how other laptops stack up against it in the coming months.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enso this shiny new laptop right here is the rog strix scar 15. it just came out and it actually has some pretty impressive specs so it comes with intel's new i9 12 900h processor uh that i talked about in my previous video it has 32 gigabytes of ddr5 memory a 240hz quad hd display a mux switch which is very important to mention and a brand new rtx 3070 ti graphics card and today i can actually talk about this gpu a bit more as well as the gaming performance of this laptop so let's dive right in and see what we should expect from this new generation of gaming laptops let's begin this video is brought to you by seasonic and their prime series power supplies these top quality power supplies are very efficient they're whisper quiet extremely reliable and my go-to choice for most of my test rigs and builds around here and to make the deal even sweeter seasonic wraps it all up in a cozy 12 year long warranty check them out using the links in the description below while a lot of new models from asus got a significant visual update this car has the same chassis from last year which is not bad but is also not as exciting as getting a visual revamp but i would say it is still very well built for a gaming laptop it feels solid and it is sturdy and even though it has a nice metal top layer there is still a lot of plastic everywhere which means that it's not going to feel as fancy as those full metal designs and speaking of design it has a pretty gamey look which is also very usual when it comes to rog gaming laptops there is an rgb light bar at the front an rgb logo on the cover and there is another rgb strip just under the panel itself there's also a small detail on the back with three included covers that you can just swap around in case you don't like the silver one and that is again very typical for aces they very often add a little personal twist to their products that you can just customize it has a pretty standard size for a 15 inch gaming laptop so it should easily fit most regular backpacks and since the scar models always lean towards performance and not just mobility it is a bit thicker than the zephyrus for example which is around two centimeters while this scar is closer to three but still with its 2.4 kilos i would say it is not extremely heavy though i would still not recommend dragging it around with you all day because you will feel it after a while it is easy to open it with one hand and on the inside there is actually a lot going on it has a nice rgb keyboard and they kept the see-through plastic on the right-hand side which i would say looks kind of nice just like on the previous models it has the asus keystone as well which you can bind to your account and use it as an actual key they even included a keychain for it which is another one of those little details so you just need to make sure that you don't lose it now some of the new rog laptops have a much smaller bottom bezel and also include a webcam in the top one but because this car uses the exact same chassis as before you actually get none of these things so the bottom bezel is still pretty obvious and when it comes to the webcam they do mention in their spec sheet that this laptop can be shipped with a 1080p external webcam in some regions but my unit right here did not have one so if you really need a webcam you'll either have to buy one or just get a different laptop that has one included now the keyboard feels very nice it has the usual tactile feel to it and it is not very loud which is great if you plan on using this laptop at work or in school it will be very easy to get used to it and it just offers a very good experience while typing and while gaming now i really do like the extra buttons on the top you can quickly change the volume you can mute your microphone you can change your fan profile or open the armory crate software and the idea here is to change profiles often depending on what you're doing so having a dedicated button to do so is definitely a plus the touchpad is pretty large and i would say it's okay now i expect that gamers will have a proper mouse anyway but this is good enough for that incidental use on the go they did include a numpad feature yet again which can be handy as well but i personally do prefer a dedicated keyboard numpad when it comes to connections asus kept the right side clear for your mouse and on the left side there are two five gigabit usb type a ports and a combined audio and microphone jack all other ports are parked nicely on the back there's the power connector 2.5 gigabit lan port hdmi 2.1 port thunderbolt 4 with display port and usb 4 compatibility and another 10 gigabit type c port with support for both display port and 100 watts of power delivery now the last part is pretty sweet because this laptop comes with a large 280 watt charging brake that you need to get the most out of your cpu and gpu while gaming but when you're on the go you can also charge this laptop with a regular type c charger now this is not going to be enough for gaming but it's going to be fine for some light use so you can leave the big charger at home and only pack the compact light charger for some light productivity tasks in case the battery life is not going to be good enough for you but i'm going to talk about the battery life a bit later also the hdmi 2.1 port is a proper one so you get 48 gigabits of bandwidth which means that you can use the hdmi port for 4k 120hz external monitors or even 8k60 if you want to but let's talk performance and let's start with the intel alder lake i9 12900a now i included both the turbo profile which pushes the cpu to around 120 watts with a fair amount of fan noise and the performance profile which keeps it around 70 watts but it's actually super quiet and no matter what mode you pick it still destroys anything from the last generation if you compare it to the last year's i9 or last year's ryzen 5000 series cpus you're looking at somewhere between 25 to 50 percent more multi-threaded performance if you have a laptop that is two to three generations old you could actually be looking at a hundred to two hundred percent performance increase now single core performance is pretty high as well uh with a cinebench score of 728 in either profile where the best cpus of last year scored between 550 and 610. now this will benefit any application that's bound to a one core or thread and should very much so help in games as well now i already did a separate video on this i9 processor so if you want to check that out i am going to put a link in the description down below uh but what it comes down to is that if you run anything on your laptop that heavily relies on the cpu like rendering or editing for example this new generation can really increase your productivity by a lot but let's check out that gaming performance now when it comes to this scarf 15 there are different specifications available and you can actually choose between an rtx 3060 3070 ti 3080 and 3080 ti now the 3070 ti and the 3080 ti are nvidia's brand new editions and the rtx 3080 ti is supposed to be the new fastest mobile gpu on the market while the 3070 ti i have right here is supposed to fall uh in between the existing 3070 and 3080 models now the important part when it comes to asus laptops is that every model in this generation will have the mux switch so for all my testing it was set to the dedicated gpu mode and i tested all games using the turbo mode that offers the most performance while not getting too hot that it becomes a problem and when we look at the results it is clear that the 2022 strix scar performs a lot better than the 2021 strix g15 sometimes by as much as 50 now games that really rely on the cpu like shadow of the tomb raider for example will now run even faster than the biggest most powerful laptops of last year so compared to the msi ge76 for example that has a higher power rtx 3080 the scar 15 will still come out on top which means that last year's models were clearly just held back by the processor especially on 1080p while these new 12th gen intel cpus really make a huge difference in games that are a bit more gpu bound and the processor plays a less of a role the result is a little bit more balanced it is still a clear and a really big upgrade over the 2021 strix g15 but the ge 76 with that 150 watt rtx 3080 does come out ahead still this laptop with its 3070 ti looks very good considering how close it gets in those games while using a lot less power so if you care just about the best frame rates going for a model with a 150 watt 3080 or the new ti would make more sense i also want to go over a few more 1440p results as it looks like 1440p laptops will be becoming more common this year and i don't have much data to compare it to yet but it is still nice to see what we can get and even on 1440p on high settings or above this laptop will run any game you throw at it pretty well and in games that do support ray tracing in dlss i really do recommend you turn that on because the lss on a 1080p display doesn't always look great but on a 1440p display in quality mode it really looks good and you'll be getting higher fps in do maternal you can see how important it is that asus decided to add a muck switch on 1080p this laptop scored 242 fps while my strix g15 from 2021 scored about 150. now that is more than a 60 improvement in one generation but when you connect an external monitor to that strix g15 it managed to score 220 fps instead which puts the difference at about 10 so overall when you compare it to the last generation the strix g15 you're looking at a really big upgrade it is a huge jump between generations uh the decision to go for a mock switch played a big part in this but the gpu upgrade and the new older lake cpu upgrade definitely added to that especially in those games that are more cpu bound so you can basically play any game on this at high or ultra settings with ray tracing even on 1440p which is just great to achieve on a laptop but one of my favorite things about this machine is that 240hz 1440p display now laptops usually either offer really fast 1080p screens that struggled to show a big benefit from these high-end rtx gpus or offer a 4k 60hz display that are great for creative work but not really meant for gaming and this fast 1440p display is such a good middle ground for gaming laptops and even though asus will sell this car 15 with a 1080p display as well i really do recommend you consider the quad hd one and it's not just about the size it is a genuinely great display the colors are excellent covering both the entire srgb and almost the entire p3 color space plus the factory calibration is pretty much spot on both for grays and for colors so you could use this right out of the box for serious creative work if you wanted to but i do kind of wish they added a dedicated srgb color profile to it there are several different presets that you can choose from so i'm not sure why they just didn't add it it would be so useful to a lot of people now the contrast is acceptable it is not the best that i've seen but it is still fine and in line with good desktop ips monitors now i was truly hoping to include response time measurements as well because i ordered the osrt tool that tech team gb developed but unfortunately it is still stuck at custom so that we'll have to wait a little bit longer but subjectively a fast-paced games do look and feel really snappy and really fast on this screen while gaming in turbo mode the i-912 900h typically uses around 57 watts of power and averages at about 90 degrees celsius which is warm but not unusual and definitely not problematic the rtx 3070 ti ends up using around 125 watts on average and goes up to 78 degrees celsius now 49.2 decibels is pretty loud though but it's still far from the loudest gaming laptop that i've tested so far and it's not going to be an issue for anyone that is using a headset but keep in mind people around you will definitely hear it now while gaming in performance mode though the cpu power drops to around 35 watts and the gpu to run 115 watts the cpu temperatures drop to a comfortable 84 degrees and the gpu temps go up to around 80 which is caused by the much lower fan speed but still it is more than fine and it makes it much quieter so it drops from 49 decibels to under 42 making this new scar significantly quieter than most high spec laptops from last year now you do lose a little bit of performance in this mode typically around 10 ish but that is still more than enough for 1440p gaming so you have two very viable modes to choose from uh i would avoid a quiet profile for gaming um it will be great for light use or even some really basic games but it cuts the gpu power by a lot which really hurts those heavier titles if you just care about cpu work both modes are just as viable turbo is great if you don't care too much about noise and just want the best results and performance mode is great for when you want high performance but at lower noise levels 32.5 decibels during a multi-threaded stress test makes this the quietest performance laptop that i've ever tested so thermals and noise improved a lot when you compare them to last year's models which is actually pretty impressive considering it is the exact same chassis so i guess it was caused by asus now adding liquid metal to both the cpu and the gpu and they also changed the fans now do keep in mind that it still uses a lot of power and that heat needs to go somewhere so you need to make sure that you don't close the intake vents on the bottom of the laptop and it will blow hot air out the sides it is pretty easy to open it up you just need to make sure you keep an eye on those ribbon cables and since it's a bit thicker we do get some more options than you would get in those thinner laptops so the memory can easily be upgraded to 64 gigabytes if you want to you can replace the included ssd or add a second one and you can replace the wi-fi chip that is hiding under the ssd do keep in mind this is a 6e wi-fi chip so you don't really have to touch it anytime soon and you can also easily clean the fans and replace the battery which is both very important in the long run now asus is marketing support for gen 4 ssds as a feature and they did use a one terabyte gen 4 ssd in this model but it only performed average at best in the pc mark 8 storage benchmark now i guess that is one thing they could improve on here speakers are fine for a laptop and you can easily get away with watching a youtube video or a show of some kind but any decent headset will do a better job here the battery life you get out of that 90 watt hour battery is pretty good but it doesn't really stand out in the lighter of my two tests which i think is the more important one it lasted around seven and a half hours now that is quite okay and it doesn't look as bad next to the f-15 with the i7 11 800 h and the g15 with a 10 750 h and both of those had lower resolution screens but the 2021 g15 with the ryzen 9 and a quad hd screen did last almost two hours longer in the same test so if you really need those extra hours it is probably worth waiting to see what the upcoming amd laptops will have to offer in the pc mark 8 battery test which asks more from the cpu but also puts the gpu to work the battery life drops to about three and a half hours so while it offers more performance than most laptops it will drain your battery much faster now keep in mind that nvidia's new battery boost feature might be able to improve that a bit but i haven't really had time to properly test it and that's it for today and i'm all around impressed with this laptop i have to say they combined a really powerful new cpu with a really solid new gpu they included a mux switch this time around and they added a very good quad hd display so i'm really struggling to find big things to complain about but i do have some i guess the chassis would be one i really wish that they redid it and added thinner bezels a bigger screen and a webcam like some new models have and i guess the a better ssd would have been nice as well especially when you do consider the possible price of this thing now i don't have any information when it comes to pricing but i really doubt that this will be on the affordable side either way a lot of new models are coming out now including the new amd based laptop so i do think that waiting a bit to see how those perform before buying anything would be the smartest thing to do now thank you so much for watching i really hope you enjoy this video if you did enjoy it please do subscribe to this channel to never miss an upload lots of interesting videos are coming your way bye guys and see you in the next one youso this shiny new laptop right here is the rog want to you can replace the included ssd or add a second one and you can replace the wi-fi chip that is hiding under the ssd do keep in mind this is a 6e wi-fi chip so you don't really have to touch it anytime soon and you can also easily clean the fans and replace the battery which is both very important in the long run now asus is marketing support for gen 4 ssds as a feature and they did use a one terabyte gen 4 ssd in this model but it only performed average at best in the pc mark 8 storage benchmark now i guess that is one thing they could improve on here speakers are fine for a laptop and you can easily get away with watching a youtube video or a show of some kind but any decent headset will do a better job here the battery life you get out of that 90 watt hour battery is pretty good but it doesn't really stand out in the lighter of my two tests which i think is the more important one it lasted around seven and a half hours now that is quite okay and it doesn't look as bad next to the f-15 with the i7 11 800 h and the g15 with a 10 750 h and both of those had lower resolution screens but the 2021 g15 with the ryzen 9 and a quad hd screen did last almost two hours longer in the same test so if you really need those extra hours it is probably worth waiting to see what the upcoming amd laptops will have to offer in the pc mark 8 battery test which asks more from the cpu but also puts the gpu to work the battery life drops to about three and a half hours so while it offers more performance than most laptops it will drain your battery much faster now keep in mind that nvidia's new battery boost feature might be able to improve that a bit but i haven't really had time to properly test it and that's it for today and i'm all around impressed with this laptop i have to say they combined a really powerful new cpu with a really solid new gpu they included a mux switch this time around and they added a very good quad hd display so i'm really struggling to find big things to complain about but i do have some i guess the chassis would be one i really wish that they redid it and added thinner bezels a bigger screen and a webcam like some new models have and i guess the a better ssd would have been nice as well especially when you do consider the possible price of this thing now i don't have any information when it comes to pricing but i really doubt that this will be on the affordable side either way a lot of new models are coming out now including the new amd based laptop so i do think that waiting a bit to see how those perform before buying anything would be the smartest thing to do now thank you so much for watching i really hope you enjoy this video if you did enjoy it please do subscribe to this channel to never miss an upload lots of
