HMD Global's Latest Devices Take Aim at Nokia's Revival
HMD Global, the company behind the popular Nokia brand, has unveiled its latest lineup of smartphones aimed at taking on the top-tier Android devices. The company's commitment to offering pure Android experiences and timely software updates is a key selling point for fans of stock Android.
The Nokia 7 Plus, an even more interesting proposition in the affordable premium space, takes center stage as a potential challenger to the crown. This device features a single block of 6000 series aluminum that has been cut into thin strips to create a slim and solid premium-feeling design. The edges are anodized twice for added color variety, while also ensuring durability. Furthermore, this is the first Nokia device to support an 18x9 aspect ratio, which creates plenty of real estate on the 6-inch full HD display.
The Nokia 7 Plus comes with a Snapdragon 616 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. However, the biggest upgrade lies in the camera department, as it now boasts the same Zeiss optics as the original Nokia 7 Plus, but with an upgraded dual-lens setup combining a 12MP primary sensor and a 13MP telephoto lens. The Pro Camera application will provide manual control over aperture, exposure, white balance, and more, along with real-time feed news to users.
Another highlight of this device is its price point of just $399, making it an attractive option for those looking for a premium Android experience without breaking the bank. The Nokia 7 Plus will be available from April, alongside the Nokia 8 Sirocco, which promises to represent HMD Global's most premium design possible.
The Nokia 8 Sirocco is poised to make a statement with its machined stainless steel body, capable of withstanding an impressive 450 pounds of pressure or three grown men standing on it. This unique feature contributes to the device's incredibly thin side profile and overall sleek appearance. The phone also boasts a 3D curved Gorilla Glass display that bends around the sides in a manner similar to the Galaxy series.
Other forward-thinking features include a 5.5-inch OLED display, IP67 wireless charging, 128GB of storage, and an impressive 6GB of RAM. The device's camera specs are identical to those of the Nokia 7 Plus, with spatial audio capture seen on the original Nokia 3. However, one potential drawback is the decision to include the same Snapdragon 835 processor used in last year's offering.
The Nokia 8 Sirocco comes at a more affordable price point of $749 and will be available from April as well. What sets it apart from other flagship devices is its commitment to the Android One program, which ensures minimal bloatware and rapid software updates. HMD Global has made a point during presentations of repeating the mantra "pure Android" and committing to this approach for all their devices starting from the Nokia 3 upwards.
The company's ambition is evident in its latest offerings, which are undeniably well-made. However, one question remains: will the lack of clear nomenclature confuse buyers? Will fans prefer an 18x9 flagship design, or will hardware specs be enough to win them over? Only time will tell as HMD Global prepares for a potential climb back to the top with these devices.
