Riding the E-Go Cruiser and Onewheel at CES 2014

Riding Electric Skateboards at CES: A Yearly Tradition

Every year, I make it my mission to ride electric skateboards at CES and find the perfect design. The first year, I rode the board from Awesomeness, and it was awesome. Last year, I experienced unparalleled speeds on the zboard, and this year, the boards are back. This is the Ego Electric Skateboard that I'm cruising with, and I've got a little controller here to help me get started. All I need to do is slide up, and I'm off.

What I love about the Ego is that it feels way more like an actual skateboard than any of the previous boards I've tried. It's literally a longboard with a motor attached to it, and it's super lightweight. Cruising on this thing is effortless, and I feel like I'm gliding across the floor rather than actually moving. The underside of the board shows off its battery, which is nice and big. We're told that the Ego has a range of 18 miles on a single charge and a top speed of 12 mph. That's pretty impressive for a skateboard, especially considering it's hundreds of dollars cheaper than most other electric skateboards.

The Ego is priced at $700, which is significantly lower than many of its competitors. I have to admit, that makes me want to pick one up and see what it's like. I've ridden plenty of electric skateboards here at CES over the years, but this next board is different. It can't really be called an electric skateboard, but it's definitely a personal transportation electronic device. The way it works is pretty simple: you put your foot down on the back, lean in, and make sure your other foot is on the switch. Once you hit the middle, the board's accelerometer and gyroscope kick in and will maintain your balance.

The experience of riding this board is unlike anything I've ever had before. It feels like you're riding something out of a science fiction movie. The self-balancing technology inside makes it feel like you're floating across the floor rather than actually moving. It's an awesome concept brought to life, and I have to admit that it was pretty mesmerizing. However, at $1,300, this board is not for everyone. You get a 25-pound contraption with a pretty limited range, which makes it not worth the price for me.

As I continued to ride the Ego, I couldn't help but think about how much I want to find the perfect electric skateboard. It's a quest that may never end, but one that I'm happy to embark on every year at CES. For now, I'll just have to keep searching and see what other innovations come my way.
