Tesla Leaks - Auto Pilot Updates & More

The Future of Tesla's Autopilot Feature with Software Update 8.0

One of the coolest features about Tesla's fleet of cars, aside from their incredible instant torque, is that they're essentially giant gadgets, similar to your phone or tablet, which can receive software updates over the air, enabling new features. The folks at electric.co have the scoop on Tesla's latest software update 8.0, which is bringing a ton of new features and a UI overhaul. Let's start with one of the best features that Tesla offers: Autopilot.

Autopilot is kind of like level three autonomous driving, where you still need to stay alert while driving. However, if you're just cruising on the freeway, the car can pretty much do all the driving for you, including changing lanes and putting up or down signals, with one lane over left to right. A limitation of the current hardware is that it cannot exit freeways, but worry not; with software 8.0, put your signal on, and the car will know there's an exit coming and will actually take that exit for you. However, it's still unclear how the car will stop at exits without recognizing stop lights or stop signs. Hopefully, it has a follow car to guide it, so if not, you'll have to put your foot on the brake to come to a stop.

Currently, with Autopilot, you can only see the back of cars that are near you; however, with update 8.0, allegedly, you'll be able to see the full degree of the car depending on where you are. So, if you're next to a car, it'll look like you're right next to it, and if a car is behind you, you'll see the front of it, and so forth. Additionally, with this update, there should be improvements in how Autopilot works, such as hovering more in the middle of the road, hugging the current right side of the lane, which it currently does.

The Tesla user interface has undergone a decent UI overhaul with the current generation 7.0, but update 8.0 is expected to make things look completely different. The biggest updates will be in maps and navigation, where you'll be able to reroute to avoid toll roads or different supercharger locations. It's also going to give you much more on-the-go planning for charging and destination charging. However, it's unfortunate that Tesla users in Europe have had access to a Spotify app for quite some time, while those in the US still won't get access with update 8.0.

Another exciting feature coming with update 8.0 is voice control, which will improve drastically. Currently, you need to hold down the voice control button and speak your command; however, with this update, it'll work much like Siri or Google Now, where you can just push a button and speak what you want to say, and the action will happen. Although, there's still hope for an automatically calling up Siri or Google Now depending on which phone you have paired.

The future of Autopilot is indeed incredible to think about, especially with software updates like 8.0 that can make cars better via software, a feature that Tesla can do uniquely in the marketplace. We're excited to hear your thoughts on this update and what features you're looking forward to trying out for yourself.
