The Importance of a Great Mentor: My Experience with Rafal
I didn't think that I would be able to focus and succeed, and I definitely didn't think it was the right time for me to take on such a challenge. But despite my doubts, I was determined to push through and make it work. The great thing about this experience was that my mentor, Rafal, was incredibly supportive and made me feel confident in myself from the very beginning.
Rafal was fantastic, and I'm sure all mentors are great, but I think I had the best one. He was so personable, and I was a little hesitant at first to get on a zoom meeting with someone I didn't know who was teaching me something new. The idea of it was a bit overwhelming for me, especially since I'm an introvert and meetings can give me anxiety. However, Rafal was awesome, and you could tell that he was really comfortable coaching people and passionate about UI and UX throughout my coursework.
As we worked together, we grew a friendship that was truly amazing. We had this running joke throughout our time together, where I would pop on a zoom meeting wearing a different hoodie every time, and Rafal would try to one-up me by getting new hoodies for himself. It was just like a lighthearted working friendship if he were here in person. Even after graduating and getting a job, I still Skype him every once in a while, and we talk about work and life. I'm very grateful for Rafal and all the support he gave me.
One of the things that was really meaningful to me from my mentor specifically from Rafal was the way he built my confidence. He empowered me to trust my gut and pointed out things that I might not have seen for myself, which just boosted my confidence completely. This experience has helped me in my work today as a brand new UX designer, where I come off as confident and capable even though I'm still learning.
Flying Out to Visit Rafal
I plan on flying out to England soon to visit Rafal, and it's going to be amazing to see him in person. We had this running joke throughout our time together that would make me laugh whenever I think about it. It was just a lighthearted way for us to connect and have fun while working together. Even though we're both busy with our careers, we still find time to talk and catch up on each other's lives.
What I Learned from Rafal
Rafal taught me so much more than just UI and UX. He taught me the importance of trusting myself and my abilities, which has been a game-changer for me in my career. I've always had mentors throughout different school programs and work, but the way that Rafal empowered me to trust my gut and pointed out things that I couldn't see for myself was truly special. It's helped me come across as confident and capable even when I'm still learning.
Conclusion
I just wanted to say thank you to Rafal for everything he did for me during my time with him. He was an incredible mentor, and I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to work with him. If anyone is looking for a great mentor who will support them and help them grow, look no further than Rafal.
