**Making the Phone Feel Buttery Smooth**
The Nothing Phone 2 is a device that excels in various aspects, such as navigating the interface, reading articles, watching videos, and playing games. The screen displays all these activities wonderfully, although it may not quite match the performance of devices like the S23 Plus. One area where the Nothing Phone 2 does excel is battery life, with a 4,700 milliamp hour capacity providing a full day and a half of mixed use on a single charge.
When it's time to recharge, the 45 watt quick charging feature gets the phone back up to 100% from zero in just 55 minutes. Additionally, wireless charging at 15 watts is available, and the device can even reverse-charge other devices at 5 Watts. The cameras on the Nothing Phone 2 are also impressive, thanks to a balance of software computation and high-res sensors on both the front and back.
The 32 megapixel selfie camera delivers solid results with good skin tone reproduction, sharpness, and dynamic range. Switching to the rear shooters reveals a pair of 50 megapixel sensors, one of which is sourced from Sony (IMX) while the other is from Samsung. These cameras take well-rounded photos with natural-looking color and match each other pretty well, especially considering the ultra-wide lens often struggles with detail and resolution.
**The Big Elephant in the Room: Performance**
One area where the Nothing Phone 2 may fall short is performance, as it uses a mid-range chipset in its first phone. However, the second phone gets a significant upgrade powered by a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1, providing Flagship performance albeit one generation behind. While this might seem like a compromise on paper, it's hardly something that makes a real-world difference with most tasks.
You'll still see about a 30% dip in gaming performance compared to devices with the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, such as the S23 and Zenfone 10. Nevertheless, unless you prioritize pure gaming performance, this is likely not an issue for most people.
**A Compromise Worth Making**
Considering the price of the Nothing Phone 2 starts at $599, it's clear that device prices like the Pixel 7 and Zenfone 10 are comparable. In fact, the Nothing Phone 2 might be my favorite phone this year so far. There's something special about this device that can't be quantified on a spec sheet or experienced through a YouTube video.
It may not be easy to pinpoint exactly why the Nothing Phone 2 feels special, but it's clear that nothing put thought into making this a meaningful smartphone. This is especially impressive considering nothing is a relatively small operation compared to companies like Samsung and Google. The execution of the phone was knocked out of the park, dare I say even rivaling Apple in an Android video.
**A Phone for Everyone**
All things considered, I genuinely think that I can recommend the Nothing Phone 2 to basically anyone. Keep in mind that it has a last-generation processor, so gaming enthusiasts may want to look elsewhere if they need top-of-the-line performance. Additionally, with an IP54 durability rating, the phone isn't as resistant to dust or water.
If you're looking for a great all-around device at a reasonable price point, the Nothing Phone 2 might be the perfect fit.
