Apple Updates 13- and 15-inch MacBook Air with M3 chips

New M3 MacBook Air Models Now Available for Order

If you were holding off on updating your 13 or 15-inch MacBook Air until Apple updated them with its M3 chips, your wait is over. The new M3 chip models are now available for order, and they're a significant improvement over their predecessors. The base 13-inch M3 Air model starts at $1,099 and comes equipped with an 8-core CPU, 8-core GPU, 8 gigs of memory, and a 256 gig SSD. For those who want to upgrade, the M3 chip with a 10-core GPU is available for $1,299, offering double the storage to 512 gigs. Both chip versions also feature a 16-core neural engine to accelerate AI and machine learning tasks.

The new M3 chips are what's available in the iMac lineup, which was updated alongside the MacBook Pros and iMacs in late 2023. The designs of the MacBook Air models themselves are unchanged from their M2 versions, with the exception of the color options. Both the 13-inch and 15-inch models will be available in two midnight Starlight silver and space gray colors. The midnight finish on the 13-inch model has an anodization seal to reduce fingerprints.

The 1080p FaceTime camera, MagSafe 3 charging, dual USB ports, magic keyboard with Touch ID, and force touch trackpad are all present on both models. These features remain the same as their M2 predecessors. The biggest new additions to the MacBook Air lineup are a Wi-Fi upgrade from 6 to 6E and native support for up to two external displays with the laptop lead closed.

When it comes to differences between the 13-inch and 15-inch models, there aren't many aside from the obvious size difference. The base M3 chip on the 15-inch model has a 10-core GPU, which is a significant upgrade over its predecessor. The 13-inch model still features a four-speaker sound system, while the 15-inch model boasts a six-speaker sound system with Force-cancelling woofers.

Taking the place of the 2020 M1 MacBook Air in the entry-level lineup is the new 13-inch M2 MacBook Air. This means that the 2020 M1 MacBook Air is officially done, and its replacement offers significant performance improvements. Apple claims that the M3 MacBook Air is up to 60% faster than its predecessor, so it's likely that users will notice a considerable difference.

For those who may have been hoping for other changes or upgrades to the lineup, it seems that there weren't any significant additions beyond the new M3 chip models and the Wi-Fi upgrade. However, the potential performance bump offered by the M3 chip is certainly exciting news for MacBook Air enthusiasts. What do you think about these new models? Do you have any hopes or expectations for future updates to the lineup? Let us know in the comments below.
