The Hyundai Sonata N Line Continues to Prove Its Seriousness About Offering a Performance Side of Its Brand

Hyundai continues to prove that it's serious about offering a performance side of its brand, which they call N. We've gotten a good feel for it with the oh so excellent Veloster N, but the end cars are meant to be driven hard and taken to the racetrack if you want some sporting pretensions in your life, but know you'll never be looking at lap times. Hyundai's N line might be what you're after, and you can see that for yourself with the all-new Hyundai Sonata Inline.

Hyundai has taken its mid-size sedan and injected a bit more energy both under the hood and with respect to the interior and exterior styling. First, let's talk about the looks. The front fascia here is aggressive. Check out those lower intakes you'll find an inline badge on the grill at each corner. Sit 19-inch alloy wheels and then out back you have a blacked-out lower bumper cover. A set of dual exhaust outlets and a rear diffuser are also on display.

Inside, Hyundai has made use of dark chrome trim and signature stitching to enhance the cabin. The signature stitching is red bits found on the steering wheel and sport seats. The real meat of this inline Sonata though is of course its engine. Hyundai gives it a two and a half liter turbocharged four-cylinder, which makes 290 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque.

It's paired with an 8-speed dual clutch transmission, which is the same one you can now find on the Veloster End. That's an entertaining combination to be sure. Interestingly though, there's no limited slip differential or all-wheel drive to be found this is a front driver only, that means you're likely to get a dash of torque steer if you map the throttle unless Hyundai engineers can filter that out by special tuning of the power steering system which is certainly possible.

A handful of outlets drove prototype versions of the Sonata and Line a few months back early word is that the car drives well but it was still just a prototype, and routes on those drives are carefully planned to both mask any flaws and highlight any selling points. Reviews do note multiple driving modes though, which is interesting there will be normal, sport, sport plus, and custom so it sounds like you'll be able to fine-tune your Sonata and Line driving experience to suit your needs.

Ever since Hyundai snagged former BMW M boss Albert Biermann, the cars have been sharper driving machines. The Veloster End is excellent, Hyundai's mid-engine prototype RM19 test car is fascinating, and needs to come to market, and all of the teaching and learnings found on full N-spec cars will filter down to the more standard machines.

This is all good news at the end of the day, there's plenty about which to be excited here. This is a mid-size sedan with nearly 300 horsepower, a tremendous warranty, great Hyundai tech inside a sporty cabin, and it should come in well under forty thousand dollars since the current top spec Limited starts under thirty four thousand dollars. Look for the Hyundai Sonata N Line to hit dealerships this fall.
