Drifting Double Decker Buses - Fifth Gear

The Challenge: A Test of Bus Driving Skills

In this unique challenge, three drivers will put their skills to the test to determine who is the best bus driver. The competition is fierce, with each driver determined to come out on top. The first test is a straight-line drag race, where the driver who reaches the finish line first wins.

The drag race begins, and both buses are off like rockets. However, as they approach the finish line, it becomes clear that one of the drivers has made a mistake. "I figured out something was causing drag," says one of the drivers. "Let the door open." This small adjustment seems to have given them an edge, and they cross the finish line first.

The second test is a precision driving challenge, where the driver must navigate a complex course with tight corners and sharp turns. The driver who completes the course in the shortest amount of time wins. The drivers are briefed on the course and told to be ready for the start. "Are you holding tight?" asks one of the drivers. "I've got a grab handle here, grab handle there," responds another.

As the drivers begin their journey, they must focus on precision driving and control. One driver, TI, takes an aggressive approach, throwing caution to the wind as he speeds through the course. Another driver, Jason, takes a more cautious approach, using his experience to navigate the twists and turns.

The stopwatch is running, and the drivers are competing against each other to see who can complete the course in the shortest amount of time. TI is determined to win, but Jason seems to be in control. However, as the final turn approaches, Jason starts to lose traction and slips into a slide.

TI seizes the opportunity to overtake Jason and crosses the finish line first. The clock reads 1 minute and 31 seconds - a respectable time for this challenging course. "Sounds all right," says one of the drivers, "but I think we can do better."

The third and final test is a drifting challenge, where the driver must intentionally lose traction on the rear wheels to create a drift. The driver who completes the most successful drift wins.

Jason volunteers to go first, but it quickly becomes apparent that he may not be as confident in his abilities as he thought. "You're never going to do this," says one of the other drivers. Jason reassures him that he will give it a try, and with a burst of speed, he begins to drift.

However, despite his initial enthusiasm, Jason struggles to maintain traction and ends up with a mere 1 out of 10 for his drifting skills. TI is not far behind, but ultimately manages to score more points than Jason, winning the challenge.

In the end, it is clear that TI has emerged as the best bus driver in this competition. His aggressive driving style and willingness to take risks paid off, earning him the title of Undisputed Winner of our Double Decker Dog Fight.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enlow stable powerful and grippy is exactly what they aren't but then That's The Challenge because in theory the best drivers can Master anything even one of these so we've got three tests to find out which one of us is the best bus driver All Aboard time for test one a 1em drag race first to reach the checked flag wins on paper these buses are identical both have 180 brake horsepower and weigh 10 tons which is about eight times as much as your family Saloon engage D handbrake off ready to bus drive are you ready yeah yeah yeah wait for the flag to drop I'm off we're off whoa whoa my lightning reactions are better than tips so I'm pulling away how can I make a bad start that's impossible these 30-year-old MCW Metro buses reach n to 60 in well actually they don't reach 60 they're limited to about 45 suddenly I figured out something was causing drag let the door open that's better oh I don't like this come on girl no hey come on boy no oh we're getting help it A close race but a clear win nonetheless test number two is a test of Precision driving and high-speed cornering well for a bus anyway we've set up a city course with Corners around about a real bus stop and a real passenger to pick up we then rush back to the Terminus stopwatch decides the winner are you holding tight well I've got a grab handle here grab handle there and I'm in control of the stopwatch so you ready yeah three two one let's get some punters let's see right you feel the G you feel a pin back in me seat TI has a Cavalier approach and throws caution to the wind but fast right coming up JP right handed 35 as we in bearing in mind the double Decker's wobbly nature and the sharp turns of the test where now left go left go left TI unique brand of exuberant happy worried round roundout roundabout how far we got to go I'm got to pick up someone in the B St sorry carrier bag I don't do I don't do car I don't do carrier bags he could carry all over the floor in the bus right out to the Finish he got stop at the bus stop the door the door oh God so how long did it take 1 minute 31 well sounds all right yeah I think that's all right right change your name and number let's get you in this right come on in where do you want to go all that wheel twirling and tire screeching looked impressive but I reckon a smoother plan of attack will be faster right come on I'm ready 3 2 1 go come on beauty there some power in there come on who come on fighter hey she under this te a bit more don't she who you didn't tell you were going to break don't worry about that ran around about twice I'm off upstairs for a better view right come on the got passenger again I couldn't get up the stairs sorry you're ugly you can't discriminate on looks God he's too fat that door never opened properly it did get ready with that St I'm going to break hard TI doors open stop the clock I couldn't stop the clock no don't give me that you open the door before it stopped I could stop the watch at the same time come on 1 minute 21. 53 1 minute 21 a whole how many seconds faster 10 we've already established that I am the king in a straight line drag race and I'm the quickest over a route stop the clock 1 minute 21. 53 but who's the best at the most important bus driving skill of all time for test three drifting 180 horsepower and rear wheeel drive sound like the perfect ingredients for drifting but we're not taking any chances we're wetting our steering pad to make it extra slippery we'll score each other out of 10 Jason to go first you're never going to do this are you you're not going to be able to drift a bus well to be fair I've never had a goat drifting a bus it's got to be possible is it not not with you I'll be able to do it cuz okay right hold on son sh close the door just get on with it come on you beauty I'm not seeing any drifting yet I want to look out the side window it's not working in theory a double decker can lean up to 45° because most of the weight is on the bottom deck oh I had a bit there I felt a little twitch but lean too far and it could could all come crashing down around our ears place your bets who who who W there some action there's some action yay that was a drift you've scored one out of 10 so far what do you mean one out of 10 I'm trying what's not doing anything no it will here it comes here we go here we go yeah so Jason managed a pult excuse for a power slide time for me to show the young upstart how it's done where's the traction control don't you worry about that Tiff prepare for a drifting lesson Sunny I'm not sure that you need as much speed as this Tiff you need speed I'm not sure to do what you need is to go into the water put the HR on oh oh Tiff showed no fear as he resorted to more Extreme Measures to try to get the bus to perform DFT this one it still wasn't enough time to get serious one Scandinavian flick coming up just calm it down I want to get off I want to get off I'm at the wrong way and then the right way and he just understood straight off the patch stop the bus yeah who no in the emergency exit there's a funny noise going on my passengers got out he's absolutely mental Tiff was fastest in a straight line and marginally better at drifting which makes him the Undisputed winner of our double decker dog fight I win you do but I'm never getting on a bus again\n"
