Adam Savage's Week at Weta Workshop, Part 4

The Art of Filmmaking: Exploring Location Options and Makeup Design

As filmmakers, we're constantly on the lookout for the perfect location to capture our vision. In this case, we're discussing three potential locations for filming a scene involving a monster fight. The first location, a grassy area with trees, is considered ideal due to its natural beauty and sense of isolation. "This place is just absolutely magnificent," notes one crew member. "I love the way it feels like you can be anywhere at once." This versatility in location offers endless possibilities for different angles and setups, making it an attractive option.

The second location, a wooded area with dirt and trees, also shows promise. While it may not offer as much natural beauty as the first location, it has its own unique charm. "I think they're all super workable," says another crew member. "They're all great in their own ways." However, despite this, the third location, a clearing amidst the trees, is ultimately deemed the most suitable for filming.

When it comes to makeup design, particularly for a creature like the monster at the center of our film, every detail matters. In one scene, we see the completion of the facial appliance, with 60-70% of the process already complete. The final touches involve adding horns and other details, which are then painted onto the costume. "We usually take the facial appliance up to around 70%," explains a crew member. "Once it's all together, we finish the paint jobs."

One particularly tricky aspect of makeup design is creating realistic wounds. In this case, the team considers using a fake blood rig and experimenting with different slash marks on the monster's body. "I think that because this pace is so fast, there isn't much meat at the front of the creature's neck," notes a crew member. "So maybe if we can go in the side somewhere, it'll look more gruesome." This approach also allows for the addition of different types of wounds, which can be added or removed as needed.

In another scene, the team considers using a prosthetic piece to create a throat slash. "I think that'd be cold," says one crew member. The goal is to achieve a realistic and terrifying effect, with plenty of room for improvisation and organic filmmaking. As they work on bringing this monster to life, every detail matters – from the facial appliance to the final wounds.

Shane, our performer, offers some reassurance that he's happy with the makeup design, particularly given his bald head. "It's awesome we can just glue it down completely," he says. The team is now focused on making sure the creature looks as terrifying as possible, with plenty of opportunities for experimentation and improvisation throughout the filming process.

The final touches are being applied to the monster costume, including a throat slash created using a combination of prosthetics and makeup. "We'll be pressingurizing and maybe coughing up some blood," explains one crew member. The goal is to create a seamless and terrifying experience for the audience, with plenty of room for creativity and experimentation throughout the filming process.

As we move forward with our film, it's clear that every detail matters – from the location options to the makeup design. By working together as a team and pushing ourselves creatively, we can bring this monster to life in a way that will leave audiences on the edge of their seats.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enall right Jason how did we do Oh insights it's not 100% Adam no ticking mighty fashion my fingers fellow yeah the fingers fell off they you know all in all it's not too bad but it's not good enough for what we want to do so we'll do another one we'll we'll wait for the temperature to go down a little bit and we'll we'll run another one the texture is amazing the detail it's it's picked off a lot yeah so one cool look at that it's about it's about I'm on my elbow I've never seen it before this is like worth memorializing whoever gets to it close-up look at their bottom of their elbow it's nearly impossible should we talk about where where we're gonna cut this behind yeah I'm thinking cuz we're trying to mimic your arm being out in front will cut it somewhere just past the join so that we can then attach that onto your own arm so it'll it'll have that natural feel that this is actually your bicep here and of course the armor and the gameís and we'll cover that I I'm thinking that man yeah absolutely yeah I'm thinking just a little bit you know maybe it's ragged there but right that it is in the forum so that we can have bones and craps a living out of that yeah and then we can have a bit of this coming off the front of your arm so you've got a little bit of a stump oh yeah exactly right you can slice that in and we just put that on the row again oh that's great a cool there we go don't that's awesome look at that good morning sir good morning Adam I think today's one of our most exciting days here because it's about the practical effects the the blood work we are about to meet with Jason and Joel Jason who is doing my arm he has we are now gonna do the cut off arm prosthetic that will be spewing blood from me yeah there's so many ways they can do a blood spewing effect like squids can work it also sways hand pressure but we need a lot of blood we need it to last for a while for the gag in this movie so I'm curious about what they've come up with practical effects usually looks for the simplest possible solution so often it seems way simpler than you would imagine I'm really looking forward to playing with these do you have an idea in your head arrive clear films I what's that referring other films like something saturated like a Tarantino effect or Welles so in samurai movies it's like when an arm gets cut off it's literally a fire hose in their blood like a Shh like a spray I don't quite want that I want to be able to do that but I want something that's really sort of gory then that has maybe even a pulse to it it is horrifying because that makes the job fun can't wait let's go inside and check out kit morning gents morning Jason Joel okay so today you guys are gonna help me bleed yes the plane okay wait walk me through what we're building them you guys have built a blood break or we're gonna problem solve the blood rate of a source here we we kind of just brought the options we didn't know hundreds in what you might like options are good and we've modified Jason's pressure pot that he uses for you guessing casting reasons and stuff like that and that will hold up a ship or a bunch of liters of blood so we have a lot of time for bleeding and it's good because it's safe and this you know fast ice and stuff engineer done already so it sort of seemed like the right thing to start with okay so that's our vessel and our pressure where what's what about the business end of how I'm bleeding that's right this is just a quick mock-up oh this is a piece of the casting a piece of okay we did yesterday so so put your arms stomping at the moment would just sort of quickly varied a bit of a blood rig there oh so this goes um this just slides up onto your arm all right let's try so feel easy to resit all the stuff which is sort of why we opted for something like this it's nice and easy to use I'm assuming it going into the bitter so now yeah dude these wing nuts are something else maybe pretty pasty so it's all regulated so we can sort of up and down the preset depending awesome after all today so more options that's part of the gag we want the part yeah yeah and I mean that's the other thing we should give you a stop valve there so we're thinking maybe we drag that to your back somewhere sure that you could actually if you want to tell them that's great you know you might be able to control their leave it if you wanted to otherwise we can have that off-screen um yes they're pretty straightforward just guess this up what pressure are you running it at at the moment 50 psi so there's a safety of 60 so we're pretty high but uh yeah so if we as well for the M so we can kind of just we can adjust this a little or oh nice and where I can nice and simple for you we can almost eat yeah just squeeze the chute oh yeah you go foot oh wow that's great I love so this is I'm literally pulsing that this is get adjusted just by simple is better that's great and we can even up and down on this too so if you did want to control this you can go a little bit lace just with us though okay what is the outrageous amount I'll be outrageous amount I suppose when that thinks that's hissing I guess now this is probably the controllable rig that's probably out there for that one but we can't change your spray nose we get some sort of other little examples of things are kind of smoked up just some pause it there's a question I have which is you know when you run ah fluid through like a super thin surgical tubing that tubing itself can kind of whip around yeah would it be possible not of all four of these because I like the volume that comes out of four but it's possible to make one of them have like that to them and I've actually got for that exact fitting sort of floppy ish oh nice alright nice to know we could yes so I mean it should be really hideous and display disgusting right like a little bit of flesh that we see that's moving out of the way or like the vein is just to go through it's amazing how simple it is yeah this is the kind of simple mechanical engineering you do for any given blood room yeah as simple as possible that is now yeah technically my first one this is really nice stuff this semi flexible so if it is a silicon surgical cheering so it's great and I stuff it yeah and it's good cuz just ripping out a pulsate up like that yes my I let the pulse fitting is really nice yeah let's give this one shot that's a really good that's a samurai movie level I like the idea that I'm glad that wasn't dollar so that's nice right that's okay here whoa that's great see that's breathe dad that's I'm wheezing blood from the wound in my arm this is off well so look we can certainly add a different nozzle on here and at like you know just keep on adding more you just have a single a single spray yeah we if we do want to go ridiculous we do have those guys well yeah on this one shoot there's our shoot bud the thing is is I'm just I'm just I if we have the option to do that I'm fine to have that option on set I just think that the the humor of moving around and spraying I always think that the the single volume coming out of the samurai films is almost too much you know what they just it's literally it's just that that's pretty surprising that's fabulous and then do how much it doesn't look like we need to do much dressing because the games and a mr. cheap idea well as well doesn't reach this up right this is make sure you're comfortable if you're hour behind you and yeah yeah totally maybe we can put a little button trigger on this line some way for you to just push yeah you know I was thinking like just a couple pieces of wood with a with a with a hinge between you know yes owl is just like a p20 climb just play this out a little bit yeah a little bit canticle advantage to um will the behavior change when we're using blood instead of water I think it will change a little bit isn't the Bloods gonna be a little bit insane okay Yoshi's err on the bottom being pathetic um exciting but it should still look really like it should look dark not too bright it's of this country safe alright I love this but just to cover our asses what is the torrential amount of blood option we type of these out from the back cover of the workshop it's a water pipe sensor okay to use these on the show all the time that's so you just fill that with blood pretty much blood pressure aza and my shoes I hear what sad come on waking up my boy she didn't stay Alice wait right here no Cameron so this was yes so this will uh yeah we were in 1080p yeah that's that's totally that's like samurai movie right there the one more time good I'm glad we have that option let's just put that in our back pocket I'll put the pin back in then we can get right can we try some red stuff coming out of here today um yeah the blood recipe with God is it's an old favorite it's it's conservative food coloring yeah yeah I mean you can you can just Bennett's more than adjusting color if you want to dock a Lloyd a redouble yellow that looks supposed to fantastic blood color yeah this is a pretty prints came across that's great I guess it gives me that sense memory I've seen this view so nice and this is an adult thing ish yeah this is different than we then I thought oh there we go oh yeah give me a little more pressure is it yeah okay I feel like it could even thin it up a little more I think this is a it still looks great it still has a terrific color but I think that like it'll spray more you start getting all of it yeah all right Jason look at that Oh that is uncanny Wow you've even got the dirt under the fingernails we get to get the enemy that's amazing so tell me how we are how we're doing on the prosthetic rig pretty well pretty well I mean we're just on airplane pass this is the this is the rig that you were on the gray so it's it's really just a sleeve with the stomach so I'll wear that like this and then the stuff is well supported there okay Dan Tom will be around behind you ah stuffing just be in front of your own elbow just then hit and then of course the bacon just sort of sits yeah so this which will be on me but behind me yeah you'll have your arm in it and then what we what we're planning on doing we've sort of I did this one with a little silicon fine yeah we've sort of tweaked one of the rivet holes we're just gonna try and pass that into the air that's great we'll just line up this hole there that's great yeah I'm Shane and then that we almost nothing holding it on that's great we're giving and get this tape yes and then get and he just sweeps his arm up and knocks my arm off it's long that's perfect I can't believe how quickly you guys turn this around it'll be dread will be dressed with blood we're gonna go and we're gonna cool this up obviously we're gonna go in an obscure our library yeah put our little tins anything's on all sorts of stuff and we'll we'll pre do this up with like a silicon blood so it's it's it's dry for wet right look wait and then of course they'll be that'll be all mean tit why all the why that's getting pumped through that's greater stress of that shaken hands with myself okay right yeah all right here we are we are almost in a day our third day we're shooting in two days guys so this has been stilted but this is our production meeting you've been to some well first we got our swords yeah they're my sword yes so the hero and that's the backup no they're both they're both double the same sword okay yes gotcha they're made this stunt swords so because this is what you'll be initially engaging with the creature right it's great it's sturdy enough that it knocked out of your hand yep and since the creature is foam latex it should I shouldn't have heard it or exactly that's fantastic need you have a backup so feel good about that good you Joey you've been at some locations yeah I've had a long day I'm with our production manager who has been reminding me that we are shooting in two days and we saw about seven places really yeah second place isn't about three or four different spots the one that I think is probably best for us is one that's really close by as it's very easily accessible but it's also just full of little tiny miniature Park / forest areas they shot a bunch of what we do the shadows okay the werewolf stuff there so there's three here I'll show you guys the first one you can kind of get a sense I do some just video of me just kind of walking around and doing a basic you know pin around my style shop and you have mm-hmm that's cool you have some like different shades of greens and oranges and they put some of the grass and each actually so they're so close to that each area has its own kind of characteristic this one's a little bit kind of heavier with some of these long trees and then once you get over this hill you can you kind of get to the Overlook of Wellington like right there if you see Wellington right which would be almost you frame out but there's like more area higher not much kind of nifty right there yeah and there's new tree stump stuff that if you play around with you know why you're resting like you know if you can imagine if we doing like a samurai cell right right riots here that's great that's coming grab flat spot with the trees all around like yeah and then you can if we take some ugh longer longer lenses we don't have as much step you'll see some the second location there's a little more things going on with the background I mean yeah it's up to you to a certain extent because it's almost like we want to get like three or four shots that feel deeply cinematic where there's some depth of location and then when we're in the action people aren't noticing oh this shot feels a little shallow or we just saw that piece none of that really matters it's more like those opening few establishing shots of the monster and the the soldier of me waking up should feel like I said like we're them a specific world yeah and so you know you get to this second location where you have slow rain rain forest lve something this is actually firsts still so like Theresa I think it's kind of clean-cut but like you can imagine if you want to get aggressive here right so I need to see where the there is it is actually a public park so people do kind of walk through areas where I be mindful of that that's one downside of this and then you have so this second area is kind of my fear which is which is you have to facing this way yeah once it over there you have some trees and the path kind of going up you can get a little bit deeper into the trees and have some more area to play around with but then if we turn around you have this actually big I don't know what would use it for but if we want to try you know again like those samurai movie fight for my do something right you know shots for the way using sliders we are gonna have a slider or some kind of dolly so we'll have that kind of camera movement to play with and you have nice Bush in the foreground yeah yeah does like a big house up here but we can easily frame that out and this place is actually it's it's early enough in the trail that there isn't a lot of flicked again there's a lot of foot traffic here there is more on that first location you didn't notice a lot of what oh oh okay yeah that's that's important I like this ground better than that manicured lawn of the previous place this one here yeah take a little less taken care of what yeah there's a lot of physics some big chunks of like you know grassy areas like this there's but that's that's ideal because it doesn't feel like it's a person two people you know a place inhabited by this holding right there that's absolutely magnificent so like this yeah this had some really good just looking at it this is great but this was about it still I could see I could see you know me lying up against that tree in one shot framing slightly differently the way it's the way it's encased and like it's like a real clearing among these trees feels kind of amazing yeah so Joey from your perspective you're thinking about it from the versatility of location how many different angle time different potential setups like it's clear so you like that's what this is my favorite this by a factor of two over the other two yeah is that overwhelm the the restrictions of how many different setups and angles that option number two seem to offer no I mean I think they're all I think they're all they're all super workable they're all you know they all look great in their own ways you know I think I think there's enough room in all of these to give us allow us to have some kind of improv and organic kind of filmmaking that we want to do here like I said the core I've gotta fight we have enough room to to play around with why I do it in the trees and in the more dirt or if we want to just have a new or the grass like there's I think those two locations itself is fine for the fight I I love this and this is where I'd like to do it if possible let's do it there location three all right shooting in two days all right Jason I see a lot of parts of the monster how are they doing in terms of coming together good good we've lived with probably around 60 to 70 percent throughout our pre-paint we've sort of got the facial appliance here we usually take the facial appliance up to around 70% so when we get it glued on to the actor we finished the paint jobs we don't take it all the way it's better to finish it once it's all together this is the heat cowl element which I'm just sort of working through painting the horns at the moment right and that's this this'll blodge Lee get finished to the same level as the suit but you won't do that finishing until it's all back yeah a lot of it on that so it's it's all it's all one piece and these these are as horns which they're burning based out at the stage and they fit into this part of the makeup and the final little bit is just a little throat blender and it just blends and through here there's a certain amount of adjustment when you put the makeup onto the egg dose of the subway sometimes it'll be closer sometimes it'll be further apart and does this look good to him all around yeah we completely glue it down Wow and Shane our performer is bald so it's awesome we can just glue it down completely and I'm in 77 just about just about now this brings up a question what have you you have any conclusions about the throat slash yeah what I'm what I'm thinking is that because this this pace is so then so that the the front of the creatures neck there's not a lot of meat there right so I'm thinking maybe if we can go in the side somewhere yeah we've got a lot more density of product there so we can sort of split it open make it look a lot more gruesome plus we can feed a blood rig in there and that's great I think that's terrific as we have it I slice some with a knife back handed right again that would work too Roger here yeah that'd be cold totally and then if we want to sort of a situated on the day we can we have a variety of different sort of wounds that we may or may not add on opinion what we're doing I've got a bunch of a file box full of literally literally a fur box all a woman sitting for that dancing that strikes me as being closer to what we need a pretty good slash yeah and then we will open the foam up too so it'll be that much deeper oh we all just can't help the scene through their doubt and sort of push it in and blend it together and make it look that much more effective and him bleeding will be about the same type of bleeding as my blood rig yeah I'm right yeah I think and we can pressurize and you know maybe coughs up some blood as well oh good it'd be quite cool he seems quite game we destroy you fight choreography he's a good man like that he'll reveal he's up pretty much anything say all right I will stop wasting your time here and allow you to continue no thanks Adam cheeseall right Jason how did we do Oh insights it's not 100% Adam no ticking mighty fashion my fingers fellow yeah the fingers fell off they you know all in all it's not too bad but it's not good enough for what we want to do so we'll do another one we'll we'll wait for the temperature to go down a little bit and we'll we'll run another one the texture is amazing the detail it's it's picked off a lot yeah so one cool look at that it's about it's about I'm on my elbow I've never seen it a stump oh yeah exactly right you can slice that in and we just put that on the row again oh that's great a cool there we go don't that's awesome look at that good morning sir good morning Adam I think today's one of our most exciting days here because it's about the practical effects the the blood work we are about to meet with Jason and Joel Jason who is doing my arm he has we are now gonna obscure our library yeah put our little tins anything's on all sorts of stuff and we'll we'll pre do this up with like a silicon blood so it's it's it's dry for wet right look wait and then of course they'll be that'll be all mean tit why all the why that's getting pumped through that's greater stress of that shaken hands with myself okay right yeah all right here we are we are almost in a day our third day we're shooting in two days guys so this has been stilted but this is our production meeting you've been to some well first we got our swords yeah they're my sword yes so the hero and that's the backup no they're both they're both double the same sword okay yes gotcha they're made this stunt swords so because this is what you'll be initially engaging with the creature right it's great it's sturdy enough that it knocked out of your hand yep and since the creature is foam latex it should I shouldn't have heard it or exactly that's fantastic need you have a backup so feel good about that good you Joey you've been at some locations yeah I've had a long day I'm with our production manager who has been reminding me that we are shooting in two days and we saw about seven places really yeah second place isn't about three or four different spots the one that I think is probably best for us is one that's really close by as it's very easily accessible but it's also just full of little tiny miniature Park / forest areas they shot a bunch of what we do the shadows okay the werewolf stuff there so there's three here I'll show you guys the first one you can kind of get a sense I do some just video of me just kind of walking around and doing a basic you know pin around my style shop and you have mm-hmm that's cool you have some like different shades of greens and oranges and they put some of the grass and each actually so they're so close to that each area has its own kind of characteristic this one's a little bit kind of heavier with some of these long trees and then once you get over this hill you can you kind of get to the Overlook of Wellington like right there if you see Wellington right which would be almost you frame out but there's like more area higher not much kind of nifty right there yeah and there's new tree stump stuff that if you play around with you know why you're resting like you know if you can imagine if we doing like a samurai cell right right riots here that's great that's coming grab flat spot with the trees all around like yeah and then you can if we take some ugh longer longer lenses we don't have as much step you'll see some the second location there's a little more things going on with the background I mean yeah it's up to you to a certain extent because it's almost like we want to get like three or four shots that feel deeply cinematic where there's some depth of location and then when we're in the action people aren't noticing oh this shot feels a little shallow or we just saw that piece none of that really matters it's more like those opening few establishing shots of the monster and the the soldier of me waking up should feel like I said like we're them a specific world yeah and so you know you get to this second location where you have slow rain rain forest lve something this is actually firsts still so like Theresa I think it's kind of clean-cut but like you can imagine if you want to get aggressive here right so I need to see where the there is it is actually a public park so people do kind of walk through areas where I be mindful of that that's one downside of this and then you have so this second area is kind of my fear which is which is you have to facing this way yeah once it over there you have some trees and the path kind of going up you can get a little bit deeper into the trees and have some more area to play around with but then if we turn around you have this actually big I don't know what would use it for but if we want to try you know again like those samurai movie fight for my do something right you know shots for the way using sliders we are gonna have a slider or some kind of dolly so we'll have that kind of camera movement to play with and you have nice Bush in the foreground yeah yeah does like a big house up here but we can easily frame that out and this place is actually it's it's early enough in the trail that there isn't a lot of flicked again there's a lot of foot traffic here there is more on that first location you didn't notice a lot of what oh oh okay yeah that's that's important I like this ground better than that manicured lawn of the previous place this one here yeah take a little less taken care of what yeah there's a lot of physics some big chunks of like you know grassy areas like this there's but that's that's ideal because it doesn't feel like it's a person two people you know a place inhabited by this holding right there that's absolutely magnificent so like this yeah this had some really good just looking at it this is great but this was about it still I could see I could see you know me lying up against that tree in one shot framing slightly differently the way it's the way it's encased and like it's like a real clearing among these trees feels kind of amazing yeah so Joey from your perspective you're thinking about it from the versatility of location how many different angle time different potential setups like it's clear so you like that's what this is my favorite this by a factor of two over the other two yeah is that overwhelm the the restrictions of how many different setups and angles that option number two seem to offer no I mean I think they're all I think they're all they're all super workable they're all you know they all look great in their own ways you know I think I think there's enough room in all of these to give us allow us to have some kind of improv and organic kind of filmmaking that we want to do here like I said the core I've gotta fight we have enough room to to play around with why I do it in the trees and in the more dirt or if we want to just have a new or the grass like there's I think those two locations itself is fine for the fight I I love this and this is where I'd like to do it if possible let's do it there location three all right shooting in two days all right Jason I see a lot of parts of the monster how are they doing in terms of coming together good good we've lived with probably around 60 to 70 percent throughout our pre-paint we've sort of got the facial appliance here we usually take the facial appliance up to around 70% so when we get it glued on to the actor we finished the paint jobs we don't take it all the way it's better to finish it once it's all together this is the heat cowl element which I'm just sort of working through painting the horns at the moment right and that's this this'll blodge Lee get finished to the same level as the suit but you won't do that finishing until it's all back yeah a lot of it on that so it's it's all it's all one piece and these these are as horns which they're burning based out at the stage and they fit into this part of the makeup and the final little bit is just a little throat blender and it just blends and through here there's a certain amount of adjustment when you put the makeup onto the egg dose of the subway sometimes it'll be closer sometimes it'll be further apart and does this look good to him all around yeah we completely glue it down Wow and Shane our performer is bald so it's awesome we can just glue it down completely and I'm in 77 just about just about now this brings up a question what have you you have any conclusions about the throat slash yeah what I'm what I'm thinking is that because this this pace is so then so that the the front of the creatures neck there's not a lot of meat there right so I'm thinking maybe if we can go in the side somewhere yeah we've got a lot more density of product there so we can sort of split it open make it look a lot more gruesome plus we can feed a blood rig in there and that's great I think that's terrific as we have it I slice some with a knife back handed right again that would work too Roger here yeah that'd be cold totally and then if we want to sort of a situated on the day we can we have a variety of different sort of wounds that we may or may not add on opinion what we're doing I've got a bunch of a file box full of literally literally a fur box all a woman sitting for that dancing that strikes me as being closer to what we need a pretty good slash yeah and then we will open the foam up too so it'll be that much deeper oh we all just can't help the scene through their doubt and sort of push it in and blend it together and make it look that much more effective and him bleeding will be about the same type of bleeding as my blood rig yeah I'm right yeah I think and we can pressurize and you know maybe coughs up some blood as well oh good it'd be quite cool he seems quite game we destroy you fight choreography he's a good man like that he'll reveal he's up pretty much anything say all right I will stop wasting your time here and allow you to continue no thanks Adam cheese\n"
