The BMW 1M: A Driving Experience Like No Other

When you get behind the wheel of a super drive, suddenly you're going very fast, but it's just throttle mapping and stuff like that. Now driving this car is every bit as wonderful as you think it is. It's it shouldn't work, but it does work. It's a little bit strange, but that's why it's good and nice and we don't have that sort of stuff anymore. I feel like those weird cars that everyone loves but are just a little bit off. That's the best way to describe this car - it's a little bit off in every way, and that makes it so good because you can't say it's beautiful, but it looks really, really good.

BMW in 2011 decided to build 2700 of these 1M cars, but they were so popular that they ended up building over 6300. That's a big difference, and that really gives you an idea of how popular these cars were. White was the most popular color, then orange, followed by black, which is the least popular color but looks really good in this color. I think you know it looks really good in this color. I think black or orange is the way to go.

So we've got a little tunnel here, yeah, i there's a it's just a turn, i can't floor it, so you don't have that much sound. It's honestly, i'm not exaggerating, it's seriously tricky but it is really, really good. You have so much control and connection to the car or with the car, but it's all over the place. That's just, i don't know, 60 throttle and the rear starts sliding, it's it's insane.

So the cool thing about this car and about the fact that it is so tricky is that it feels like something really special. You know, it is much more intimidating to drive than a regular 135i of that generation. i honestly would think if you put some Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires on this car, it would absolutely transform it. But the way it is now, it is seriously intimidating and i absolutely love that.

Okay, now at speed, we can floor it, this is fourth gear, and you can feel that it, it does have some power and you can feel that it's not that heavy, and the wipers don't really like it, but that's 250. That's seriously quick! It's a quick car, and oh i it just feels so connected. You have hydraulic power steering of course, so this is before the all-electric stuff, and it just gives you so much feedback. You feel the road through your seat and the front wheels through your steering wheel. It is it is a really, really good car.

And that's why i said it might be one of the best F cars ever built because it really combines the old with the new. You have the new drivetrain, this is the first full-blown M car that was turbocharged, well that's a milestone on itself but just the way it combines that old-school feel with the new school technology and engine is just really, really spot on.

So the 100 to 200 time is 1188, which is comparable to a BMW M140i with automatic gearbox. So it is seriously quick, and this is a one-year-only car, fifth gear, that's seriously impressive. But i don't really want to take it any further than that because of those tires. Man, they really know how to build a good car. It's just like the manual, it's still like a i don't want to say a weak spot but it's not as delightful and just satisfying as the rest.

And i was talking to Martin about this, and he said well, how is it that BMW have been building these performance cars with manual gearboxes for like 40 or maybe 50 years, and you you drive a Honda Civic Type R and it has a nicer manual gearbox than an M3 which is just weird. I totally agree. I mean they should be better at this. i don't know what's up with these manuals.

We drove an M4 a couple of years ago with a manual gearbox, it was absolutely horrible to drive. This is actually quite a bit better than that M4 and i really really hope that our new BMW M3 which we ordered with the manual gearbox will be something like this. For BMW, this is actually really good.

But oh that straight six sound with that the graphics back box. It's really, really nice. That's a really good mod, andre you did a good job because it it really livens up the car and the experience of driving it. but we never recorded any automan stuff we didn't do any measurements and it has been over four years so we thought we'd drive one again because it is one of the coolest m cars maybe maybe the best m top comments so you can check him out and follow him if you like uh today i'm going to walk around it we'll do a quick recap of what the 1m coupe is and then we'll take it for a drive towards the autodopanal alright so let's start with well let's go back to 2011. what happened there's this story that goes around uh which i've heard a couple of times before oh yeah the mechanics wanted to do something in the weekends and then they decided to build this car no that's not what happened come on i've heard this story too many times to be true so they wanted to build a small amp car they wanted to go back to the roots i mean the e30 m3 was a very small car probably around this size and they didn't really have any budget cut out for that so they didn't want to spend too much money but they did want a small m car i think that's how it happened what did they do well it is a parts bin car so it's a bit of a frankenstein they took parts from all over the range and well mostly from the e92 m3 and m3 competition and put it on this small one series and it is one of the best decisions they ever made if you ask me we have a front bumper that resembles the one on the m3 as well the front is super aggressive but my favorite part everyone's favorite part of course the wide body that is because this front and rear axle uh was taken from the e92 m3 and it doesn't fit the m the the the one series body doesn't fit otherwise they need to they need to build this crazy white body and that's just the charm of this car is that it's so short wide fat square it just makes it so special and it also looks like the body has shrunken around the parts they installed and i just love that look these wheels are from an e92 bmw m3 competition so this is a special wheel the brakes are m3 as well we've got a mechanical limited slip diff at the rear from an m3 as well wide body very very nice and it gives this this little car such a good stance and well it's hard for me to determine where i need to sit for you guys to see the wide body maybe it's a little bit further but the rear of this car is just so freaking cool andre did do one thing right uh well he did a lot of things right but one thing in particular he installed this akrapovic uh back box and tailpipe exhaust so it's not a full exhaust but it is the back box which means that it sounds a lot better than stock because stock it is a bit quiet for my liking but with this back box you can really hear uh the difference and it also has some valves which i will show you in a minute so what do we have well this engine is the n54 three liter twin turbo inline six engine this is basically the 135i engine so it's not a full-blown m engine but it is a tweaked by m version of the 135 i engine this produces 340 horsepower and 450 newton meters of torque 500 newton meters of torque with overboost and you can really really feel that it's very very torquey and because it's a manual only available with a manual gearbox you can really feel that torque it's it's a very special experience to drive this car uh especially in the wet uh yeah it's on michelin pilot supersport tires which are well they're known for the fact that they are rubbish in the wet and in the cold and it's about three degrees out today and it is wet so yeah it is a very special combination on the interior we have well nothing really special you can see that it is just a one series that they amified a little bit uh we've got an m steering wheel of course with the stitching we've got different dials which are really really nice i think that gray with that red and yellow really like those dials and we've got a little bit of alcantara with orange stitching on the dash on top of the dials as well on the instrument cluster on the doors and we've got orange stitching on the seats as well and we've got alcantara on the gear lever so it's a couple of touches but it does make a difference i wanted to let you guys hear the exhaust of course so door open and well we need a key so this is valve's closed which i would say is pretty much the same as stock maybe a little bit louder already but we've got a little button right there you can see the krapovich logo you press this button and you can hear the change you can see that it turns red as well and now it's definitely louder it's got a little burble in it and it sounds really really nice because it has that i don't know a little bit of a racy raw edge to it which i really like so let's take it for a drive as i said it is very tricky in these conditions um honestly it's one of the most tricky cars i've driven in a long time even a 700 horsepower m3 in the dry is not as tricky as this car in the wet so it's maybe it's a little bit comparable but this has a manual gearbox and a lot of torque so that does feel a lot different okay so we'll select m mode here on the steering wheel which oh it's a sort of a super drive suddenly you go very fast but it's just throttle mapping
