Panasonic has made some exciting updates to their Lumix lineup, and we're going to dive into all the details.
We also have some enhancements in the Lumix lab mobile app now. The ability to actually do remote shooting with this, or if you want to trigger the shutter remotely and then also we have some options in terms of being able to select specific files and transfer those over if you don't want to bring everything onto the mobile app.
Speaking of firmware, we're just getting warmed up. So, not only have we got firmware for the S9, but also new firmware for the S52, the S5 2x, the original X5, as well as the G9. Starting with the S5, it has the least improvements on it. General stability is usually something you find in a firmware update. But we also have the ability to customize one of the buttons to do real-time LUTs, and of course, the 18-40mm is a pop-up lens design, so when you're not popped up, it gives you a warning saying hey, you need to have the lens extended.
The S52, the S52 X, and the G92 now have compatibility with the DMW XLR 2 microphone adapter. The S52, the S52 X, and the G92 now have 5G Wi-Fi compatibility unlocked, which is awesome. It's not available in all regions and that's a country law remember when we were in Japan, it's actually not permitted there but if you're in the US, you'll be able to use 5G Wi-Fi.
With everything but the S5, we also have compatibility with the Lumix lab app, and so one thing I want to mention about the mobile app is that Lumix has announced and they said this when we were in Japan earlier this year that the Lumix lab app will be the default app moving forward. We're a transition right now, and unfortunately, it's affected their ratings in the App Store at least on the Apple side of things but they are adding more compatibility with various camera models.
So, for those of you who love your photo Styles, the S52 and the S5 2x now get the like a monochrome black and white style, which is actually very beautiful and very usable. I enjoyed using this on a bunch of my photographs here. And if you use Lightroom and you shoot in raw, these will come up as camera profiles as well, so they're not just limited to JPEGs.
A lot of new stuff for Panasonic today, and I want to talk a little bit about the S9 because I know this has been a little bit controversial since it came out. I want to give you some of my impressions just on this and the system now that we've had it for a few months now. The S9 targets a certain type of photographer who is going to be focused on content creation, it's a great beginner camera, and I think it's sold fairly well. It's not really designed for somebody like me; it's not something that I would instantly recommend but that would depend too because I think somebody who's a beginner and just wants something with a little bit better image quality than they're going to get on their phone for something like Instagram.
And the thing that I love the most about it is, it's essentially the same camera sort of as the S5 too or even the S5 for that matter. The image quality is identical, and if you're fine with 24 megapixels, you can get some wonderful images with this. I found myself taking this home a few times my favorite lens that Panasonic has released is this 100mm macro lens, and it's a lot of fun to use.
And again, if you don't need the mega megapixels and the biggest complaint for me is the back screen, if you're shooting out in bright sunlight, it does become problematic. You need to crank up the brightness on it, and even then, it's kind of weird trying to shade it. But if I'm working in even light which I typically do, I don't shoot in bright daylight a lot; uh it works really well, and it's a really compact portable system that you can kind of take anywhere.
And I think Panasonic has done something interesting with that that even though for series photographers it may not fulfill a need yes I would love to have an electronic shutter and yes I would love to have an option for an electronic viewfinder that would make this a camera that somebody like me would use but that's not the target audience.
And I think that Panasonic has done something really cool in the Lumix lineup with putting this camera out so as always I would love to hear what you guys think. So drop me a comment below, see you in the next video. Go upgrade your firmware until then later!
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enall right welcome back everyone in this video we're going to be talking about some new stuff from Panasonic you probably remember the S9 that was released earlier this year in May when this was released they talked about two lenses one of which was available at the time which is the funkalicious 26 mm and then they also talked about an 18 to 40 mm pancake zoom lens well it's here so we're want to talk a little bit about this lens clearly designed for the compactness of the S9 there's a couple things that I really love about this first of all it is extremely lightweight it comes in at only1 15 5 G and when you put it on the S9 the combined weight is only about 641 G so while this is probably not the kind of camera you're going to put in your pocket unless it's winter and you have a really big Caton it is very lightweight and the intended use of this is for people who want a very portable system that they can just kind of take on vacation they can walk around with and get some great shots and I think this lens does really well to complete that idea now this isn't 18 to 40 mm Optical lens but it does go all the way out to 120 mm if you're going to use the he hybrid Zoom feature and so the way this works is it actually does create a crop so you're going to lose megapixels but I think for Content creation and what this was designed to do which was to take images you can just edit in camera using the applied Luts and you just basically put them on your smartphone and upload to something like Instagram you don't need a ton of resolution for that and I think that it works just fine so this does give you a lot of Versatility beyond that 40 mm Optical focal length this lens features eight elements in seven groups three of the elements are a spical two are extra lus dispersion and one of them is an ultra high refractive index it's a lot of fancy terms for the intended user on this lens but these do correct a lot of things in the lens and I want to look at some image examples but just my impression so far on this is that it is very sharp and it doesn't do a lot of vignetting there is not a lot of distortion this is actually very welld designed and we'll talk about this in a second but I think that fits right in with a lot of the design decisions that have gone into the lenses that Panasonic are making so we're going to look at some images here but I want you to bear in mind as we look at these as what the lens is and what the intended user intended use cases are so we're talking about something that's very lightweight very portable priced very well competitively it's not an expensive lens and so the big tradeoff here is going to be your aperture which is an f4.5 to f6.3 depending on where you are in that focal range having said that it does have a minimum Focus distance when you're at 18 mm of 15 cm so this first image is an example of that and a couple things that I want to point out is first of all contrast is extremely well controlled we do get a very nice pleasing bokeh in the background which is not going to be the normal performance for this lens but it is there if I zoom in 100% on this flower with the moisture on it you can see that this is probably not going to you know stun anyone with its outrageous sharpness and microcontrast but it really isn't bad when you consider the lens at this price point I think it's very adequate the only thing that I see and I shot this wide open so this is at f4.5 we do have a little bit of veiling around the subject here but it's very well controlled and it's really not a big deal we're at 100% if I zoom back out you're going to see that you really don't notice very much at all so I think this is very acceptable performance on this type of lens another example here if you want to look at microc contrast on something like this I think it performs better than a lot of lenses that are in this category if you look at this image and we have a lot of textures a lot of sharpness in here if I zoom right in again it's a 24 megapixel lens so we're not going to get a crazy zoom on here but it does work pretty well and I think this is very well controlled and certainly acceptable again the intended use is something that you could take on vacation or even just walk around with and I think it certainly does well for some something like that it's sharp enough another example here you can see vignetting is very well controlled if I zoom right in this is f8 so you're going to get a very sharp picture in the end there microc contrast does improve when you stop down and so this lens does need a lot of light but for that intended use once again I think it does the job you can also see a lot of the sharpness in the power lines over here does pretty well now I didn't really test chromatic aberration on this lens but I will say in the examples that I have here there are spots where lenses that I have that are a much higher price point would give you little chromatic aberration so I'm not saying it's not going to be existent but I didn't notice any major problems with it color and contrast are very well handled with this lens and I think this is the kind of thing where you're not going to lose a lot of Shadow detail the image holds together again I'm pretty impressed with how sharp this is especially when you look at some of the type here uh below the train uh it holds up and it does really well and again just to point this out the whole intention of the design with the S9 is something that is very Compact and lightweight and it does the job the lens itself is only about 41 mm when it's fully retracted it is a retractable lens so when you turn the camera on it's going to tell you you need to have the lens pushed out I'm going to push it out to 18 there and it does grow a little bit on you but the weight doesn't increase or anything and it handles really well so uh anyway I think this is actually a pretty good bet when you were looking for something that is portable and lightweight that is not going to cost a lot of money I think Panasonic as expected have done an incredible job with this and of course it's l Mount so you can put it on pretty much any L Mount camera I used it a lot on the S5 Mark II and really enjoyed the results I was getting and the experience that I had actually shooting with this lens when you want something that's really lightweight all right so that's the new lens but that is not all that is new today in the world of Panasonic there is a firmware update that comes out that adds a lot of functionality to the S9 I want to talk a little bit about that the first feature that they've added in here are going to be frame lens now why would you want to use frame lens what are they intended for so many of you know that when you have a full-frame sensor if you're shooting video generally speaking you're probably working with a 16x9 crop or some other video Centric crop on there Panasonic do allow the opportunity to film with what's called open gate so you're going to make a movie using the entire sensor you can crop it later in post now why is this advantageous well it's going to be a wider image area than what you're shooting for your 16x9 which allows you to use one set of footage and actually be able to if you want to go vertical with it for social media you can just use one clip go a little wide with it and then you can do your crop ends on that and so one thing they've added for this to assist is we have now three sets of frame lines that can be used so for the frame frame markers you're going to go into the menus and you can see that you can toggle any of the three on and off the other thing that you can do is you can use the touchscreen functionality to not only resize but also position your frame markers so frame markers come in really handy they're not going to do anything to the picture in post-production in other words they're not actually cropping the video but especially even if you're going full screen if you want to see where your vertical lines are and where your horizontal frame lines are you can use those to compose to make sure that everything with the subject is lining up for both types of video delivery in the end whether you're going to go vertical or horizontal so that's actually something is very useful and you've got three of them so if you want a third intended use you can put them on the screen you can actually change the colors between these also and they don't get confusing don't get in the way you're going to use this to compose another new addition to the S9 firmware a lot of you are absolutely going to love this if video time limits drive you nuts in other words you can only record a 5-minute clip because of whatever your resolution settings are well Panasonic found out that that really wasn't a problem at all so they have actually added a button in there now to make video record limit selectable so it sounds like we're adding a limit we're actually adding the ability to not have the limit on so this is actually very cool it'll give you a couple warnings saying that hey you might overheat the camera I haven't had any problems with it at all it works just fine so for people who have trouble focusing on airplanes and trains you are now covered these are subjects that you can select in the recognition settings and we also have Target points for cars and motorcycles so if for instance you want the autofocus to prioritize the helmet you can do that or if you want it to prioritize the bike anyway for people who use a lot of autofocus I can see this is a really interesting addition we also have some enhancements in the Lumix lab mobile app now so the ability to actually do remote shooting with this or if you want to trigger the shutter remotely and then also we have some options in terms of being able to select specific files and transfer those over if you customize one of the buttons to do real time Luts and of course the 18 to 40 mm is a pop-up lens design so when you're not popped up it gives you a warning now saying hey you need to have the lens extended so that will apply for any extendable lens moving forward the s52 the s52 X and the g92 now have the compatibility with the DMW XLR 2 microphone adapter the s52 the s52 X and the g92 now have 5 GH Wi-Fi compatibility unlocked which is awesome it is not available in all regions and that's a country law remember when we were in Japan it's actually not permitted there but if you're in the US
