Google Pixel Fold vs. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 - Which foldable is better

The Season of Foldables: A Comparison Between Samsung's Z Fold 4 and Google's Pixel Fold

Google's first foldable phone has finally arrived, but with it comes some inevitable first-gen stumbles. As expected, Samsung has been in the foldable game for many years longer than Google, and this experience shows in their latest offering. One of the main reasons to consider the Z Fold 4 over the Pixel Fold is its better performance. While the Pixel Fold may have a newer processor, according to our benchmarks, the Snapdragon chipset in the Z Fold 4 outperforms the Tensor G2 chip found in the Pixel Fold.

This difference in performance is particularly noticeable when it comes to thermal management. The Tensor G2 chipset that powers the Pixel Fold is notorious for causing devices to run hot, even under light loads. In contrast, the Z Fold 4 isn't susceptible to these overheating issues, which means you're less likely to experience sweaty palms or discomfort during extended use.

Another area where the Z Fold 4 excels is in its battery life. Both phones provide around a day's worth of battery, but the Pixel Fold has a slightly larger cell. However, this advantage is largely negated by the Tensor G2 chipset's poor efficiency, which puts the Pixel Fold's battery life at roughly the same level as the Z Fold 4.

When it comes to charging speeds and capabilities, the Z Fold 4 takes a clear lead. With 25W wired charging, the Z Fold 4 can charge faster than the Pixel Fold's 21W. Both phones also support wireless charging, although Samsung's foldable has a slightly faster 10W wireless charging speed. Unfortunately, the Pixel Fold doesn't have this feature.

Finally, one of the standout features of the Z Fold 4 is its support for stylus input. As an artist or avid note-taker, this may be a deciding factor for you. The Z Fold 4 supports any stylus input, whereas the Pixel Fold has no active stylus support. You'll need to buy the S Pen separately if you want to use it with the Pixel Fold.

So, which foldable should you choose? Ultimately, the decision comes down to what you prioritize. If software experience, camera capabilities, and exclusive Google features are at the top of your list, then the Pixel Fold may be the way to go. However, if top-tier performance, good battery life, faster charging, and stylus support are more important to you, then the Z Fold 4 is likely the better choice.

But if you're looking for a foldable that's on the cusp of being replaced by an even newer model, it might be worth waiting. Samsung is set to announce its next-generation foldables this month, including the Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5. These new devices may offer significant improvements over their predecessors, so it may be worth seeing what they have to offer before making a purchase.

In conclusion, both the Z Fold 4 and Pixel Fold are capable foldables with their own strengths and weaknesses. While the Pixel Fold excels in software experience and camera capabilities, the Z Fold 4 takes a clear lead when it comes to performance, battery life, and charging speeds. If you're serious about buying a foldable, it's worth waiting for Samsung's next-generation offerings. But if you need a reliable device that checks all your boxes today, then one of these two devices may be the way to go.
