The Legacy of Baja Wins: A Conversation with Bruce Myers

Bruce Myers is a name synonymous with innovation and adventure in the world of off-road racing. His iconic Volkswagen-powered dune buggy, designed to beat motorcycles on the notorious Baja 1000 course, has become an legendary symbol of speed and ingenuity. We sat down with Bruce to talk about his remarkable journey, from humble beginnings to international acclaim.

It's hard to believe that when Bruce was a kid, you could buy used Volkswagens for fifty dollars from a junkyard and build a car like this one into a competition machine. Bruce himself built a Baja-winning car using a 40 horsepower engine, which he claimed broke records by beating motorcycles. He designed it so that it was simple, easy to maintain, and rugged – a testament to his ingenuity as an engineer and driver. "It's hard to believe today," Bruce said, "but when you're a kid, you can build a car like this using parts from a junkyard."

The Manx, as the dune buggy is affectionately known, was designed by Bruce in the 1960s. It's built on the shoulders of true Baja winds, and its legacy continues to inspire car enthusiasts around the world. The original design features a fiberglass shell, which provides exceptional strength and durability, making it ideal for off-road racing. With a typical weight of just 1300 pounds, the Manx is incredibly lightweight, allowing it to deliver impressive power-to-weight ratios.

Bruce's exploits with his dune buggy were well-documented in the automotive world. He set records by beating motorcycles on the Baja 1000 course, and his car became an iconic symbol of speed and innovation. "It was a great place that rented Myers Manxes," said Freeman, who had the privilege of meeting Bruce at one point in his life. "They were always a part of my Automotive journey in life." The Manx also appeared in films, including the Steve McQueen-starring movie The Thomas Crown Affairs.

As we spoke with Bruce, it was clear that he remains passionate about cars and innovation. His legacy extends far beyond his own accomplishments, however. The Volkswagen-powered dune buggy has inspired countless car enthusiasts and manufacturers alike. "Once you see this," said Freeman, "it's pretty easy to copy." And yet, despite the many imitators, Bruce's original design remains an iconic symbol of speed and ingenuity.

Fast-forward to the present day, and it's clear that Bruce's legacy lives on through a new generation of car enthusiasts. The man behind the Manx has teamed up with some talented individuals to revive this classic design for a modern audience. "We're packaging all of the battery packs and motor," said Freeman. "Literally if you were to look at this, you wouldn't see it – that's going to be our secret sauce." This electric version of the Manx is an exciting development in the world of automotive innovation.

The original Manx kit and used Beetle could easily cost less than a thousand dollars in the 60s. Today, vintage unrestored 1964 Max models are valued at around forty-five thousand dollars. It's clear that this iconic design has become highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike. As we prepared to take the Sunshine for a spin, Freeman reflected on what it means to be part of this legacy. "I think you should take Philip," he said. "Philip needs to experience this with us in this original Manx."

As we set off into the desert, the 40 horsepower air-cooled engine roared to life beneath us. The controls were simple and intuitive – steer with one finger, stop with hardly any pressure at all. It was an exhilarating experience, and a testament to Bruce's ingenuity as an engineer and driver. As we navigated the dunes, it was clear that this car is more than just a relic of the past. It's a symbol of speed, innovation, and adventure – a true icon of the automotive world.

We're excited to see where this new chapter in the Manx's history takes us. With electric power and cutting-edge materials, the possibilities are endless. "Different materials that you can grow," said Freeman, as we discussed the innovative approach taken by some manufacturers. "Mycelium is a fabric of mushrooms – it's a whole new frontier in terms of automotive design and changing." The future of the Manx looks bright indeed.

As our adventure came to an end, we couldn't help but wonder what the future holds for this iconic car. With Bruce's legacy at its helm, there's no doubt that the Manx will continue to inspire car enthusiasts around the world. Whether you're a seasoned off-road enthusiast or just starting out, this incredible machine is sure to leave you breathless – and eager for more.
