The Making of a Dog Box: A Transmission Installation Project
We've been working tirelessly to install a dog box transmission in our project vehicle, and today we're taking it to the next level. The case is on, and we've started putting together the shift mechanism. We've got part of the shift mechanism assembled, but not the top piece yet. For now, we're just using it as a test unit to see how everything fits together.
As you can see, the case has been cut open to reveal all the inner workings of the transmission. We've also had to pull it back off to throw on the reverse fork. This little guy helps hold the fork in position, and we've got it securely attached. Right now, the transmission is in neutral, and we're spinning the input shaft with our thumb. Everything looks smooth and good so far.
To put the transmission through its paces, we need to engage the gears. We'll start by putting it into first gear. As you can see, we've got a dog box transmission here, which means we don't have a synchronizer ring like in a traditional synchromesh transmission. Instead, we need to slowly spin the transmission into position and then click into gear. With that said, let's get into first gear.
As we start to shift into second gear, you can see the dogs clicking into place. We've got a lot of work to do before this transmission is fully assembled, but so far, everything looks good. Now, we're in second gear, and we'll need to engage third gear next. This is going to be the tricky one, as we need to make sure that all the gears are properly aligned and that the clutch release bearing is in place.
We've got a cuff built into this transmission case that prevents the gear sets from separating under high load. The box has been proven to go a 770 horsepower in Aaron's car, so it's clear that this dog box is capable of handling some serious power. We'll need to do some shimming and measurements before we can final assemble everything, but for now, we're just excited to see how it all comes together.
We've made some great progress on this transmission over the past few days, and we're getting close to being done. However, we still have a ways to go before the hatch is back up and running. We'll need to get the clutch in place, install the shift linkage, and make sure everything is properly aligned. But for now, we're just taking it one step at a time.
A Break from Transmission Work
We've been working non-stop on this transmission project, and it's nice to take a break and do something else for a change. We decided to grab our jet skis and hit the water. Nothing beats spending time outdoors and enjoying some fresh air.
A Sunburned Nose
As you can see from my sunburned nose, we've been working hard in the sun lately. But it's all worth it when we get to see our project vehicles come together. We're proud of what we do here at the shop, and we're excited to share our progress with you.
The Minivan Teardown
We're not done with just one project yet! Our next step is to completely tear into the minivan that's sitting in the shop. We'll be taking it apart to its bare bones and rebuilding it from scratch. It's going to be a wild ride, but we're excited to see what this project brings.
The Odyssey
Finally, our latest project has been picked up, and we couldn't be more excited. We're still not sure what to expect, but with all the experience we've gained from building other projects, I think we're ready for whatever comes next. Stay tuned for updates on this new project as it develops.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enoh shoot boys we got some new wheels and tires going on the old cummins here check these things out as you guys saw we got some nittos for waggo back when we got new wheels and tires no it's not it better not be that's why we didn't show it in the last video i mentioned that we had some new wheels and tires that i was going to show you guys in a sec but we didn't have the right lug nuts to get the new wheels and tires on just yet but i just got those guys big fancy straight from amazon so we are good to go but like i was saying we got those new nittos back when we did the wheels and tires on wago and we got some more nittos these are the ridge grapplers for the cummins here and we uh got these wheels from wheel pros and these are the fuel covert wheels i believe and coverts yep fuel coverts i think they should look pretty good on the commons here and as you guys saw in that other video these were wearing really bad so we're going to take this thing this one's not as bad as the driver side secondary rubber yeah it's not great though so we need to go get an alignment and uh you know get that taken care of but we got some brand new wheels and tires to throw on this thing get her looking fresh look looks sick dude yeah she's been rocking the stockies ever since we picked this thing up so we're going to get her on a fresh set here hopefully they fit and we don't have to we're going to lose anything out of the way 200 horsepower turning these monsters what's really the price of looking cool all right row dozing down the interstate honestly i'd worth all the horsepower trade off in the world dude that actually does look pretty good on it they look good on there not gonna lie that looks pretty mean that's a upgrade from the stock ones for sure now you'll have to watch the truck more than once a year and everything is flossing dude can i hang out with all your diesel friends now no but i got my my fuel wheels man uh they're not they're not 24 by 14 so you're just you're not that cool you're not wide enough and stance stance truck enough yet you're not bro dozed out enough yet buddy we got a stock dodge with some some off-road tires hey she has she has a tune get out of here it's not stock it has a tune bro we can't say that on youtube oh yeah it's actually phone stock bone stock and follows all emissions compliance in my state and you didn't hear anything we just said nope yeah those were pretty rough buddy those oh we got down to the metal cords what's really weird is look dude i don't even know how this happens you can see a streak right through here where this is like all flat spotted and then this is all flat spotted and it's weird because it's like at that angle yeah we'll have to just get her over to the alignment rack make sure everything looks good under there yep but that is a lot of miles on those tires regardless but it's not wearing properly right that's for sure it needs an alignment it's a dodge it's typical brings you back to the discount tire days huh i'll tell you what me and kyle we used to be the fastest two in that shop oh yeah we do a four new we do a four do in like 13 minutes i swore we did it faster than that because it wasn't the the ideal time like 15 the idea was 15 but that was with a four-man crew and just us two we were cooking that's where me and why i met was discount tire was that like 2013 somewhere in there yeah about 2013 2014 i graduated 2014 so i still worked there after high school a little bit yup and then i quit went to the body shop uh now we're youtubers life goals accomplished whoops t down bro check it out that looks pretty good put this tire under here just to make sure she didn't roll back on us oh there's a little bit of a wiggle there those actually look really good rare footage of me actually washing the car never before seen look at me i'm watching my truck what's up guys today we're making some more progress on the route to see here why it uh got a whole bunch of wiring that we're not gonna need cleaned out of this thing uh we got the harness pulled out of the way here just double checking what we're gonna need to rewire get it all cleaned up we made some modifications to our battery mount here because while we were at the ice cream cruise we actually had a dead battery and the guy from anti-gravity batteries was actually at the event and he supplied us with a brand new anti-gravity battery and we ran the whole event until it broke with this battery and uh these things are freaking awesome uh they're really light and everything and we didn't it is so crazy how light these things are like normally this size battery you know be kind of hard to hold on to can literally yeah a couple fingers really light so light and it's like a smart battery so it's got this restart function so that the battery housing stuff too yeah like if the battery goes dead it technically isn't dead you can click that and it has it'll store just enough power to start the car again yeah that's kind of cool pretty cool so while we're over there we got that new battery for the van but since it has this little ridge around it we had to notch a little trunk out right here to make it fit better but we got that back in there and we've just been kind of cleaning everything else up we're getting ready to drop it down and at some point we're going to power wash it all out because it's really gross in here right now why is getting the abs module taken out because we're not going to need that guy anymore don't need to delete it dude got out of there and uh like 30 pounds yeah a little weight reduction and we're going to simplify the brake lines and we weren't running abs or anything like that anyway so get all that out of there keep on going all right boys i'm finally giving the hatch a little bit more attention today we are tearing these transmissions apart right here as you guys remember we got the billet h22 all-wheel drive case this thing's still looking beautiful with our dog box gear set to go in there and this is a donor stock h22 transmission that i'm going to need some parts from to make this one all work we need to steal the shift works out of this guy we need this nut we need the reverse gear and the mechanism that controls that so there are a couple parts that we have to swap over from the stock transmission to our new dog box here and right now i am getting ready to make a window case and if you guys don't know what that is basically this is the other half that bolts to the top of the transmission here i'm going to cut this whole trunk out right here so that when we reassemble this new one right there we can make sure everything is shifting properly everything looks good and with it all tightened down we can actually get in there and just you know double check it i've never done a window case when we've done transmissions in the past uh they really want me to take the time and do this one right and i do as well so i'm gonna double check everything make sure everything is within tolerance and everything is looking good and then after we get the window case back off after we confirm everything is good i have another transmission back over yonder this is the one that came out of the router c when it still have the h series so this is the original h22 that came out of the minivan and it has a stock h22 transmission on it as well and i'm going to have to take that back casing to make our new transmission because this one will have a giant hole cut out of it so i'm going to start on that right now like i said yesterday i was busy tearing these things apart and today we're going to do some cutting and i got some pictures i'm just going to show you guys briefly what it's going to look like these are from aaron lopez the guy that made the billet case so these are some pictures of his window case so you can kind of see in there what you need to do and uh yeah so let's go ahead and start cutting and uh i don't think i'll have this transmission fully assembled by today but make some good progress on it got new bearings and everything like that so she's gonna be fresh and ready to go for when the time comes we get the hatch back up and going check that out got our window case all cut out so now when we go to assemble the whole deal we'll set that guy over like so we will be able to see everything that's going on in there to make sure everything is working properly test shift it here on the table and make sure she's good to go but we still have quite a few things we need to do before we're ready to do all of that right now this thing has no bearings in it whatsoever there's a bearing that needs to go down underneath there which is this guy and there's a bearing that needs to go here which is this guy and we need to swap these uh shims over onto that input shaft over there as well and there was this race that sat right there and it had a shim underneath it and that guy was under there popped that guy out use the slide hammer to get under there got that one out of the way we have a brand new race in a box somewhere over here in a little package this is for the other side i have a brand new race somewhere i just had it but anyways we're not reusing that one because that's the old one we do have to reuse that shim that came out though a brand new race to press into there i have all new bearings for everything so we don't have to use any of the old bearings and oh that is actually where the race is i'm going to go grab it right now we have to make a trip over to the freezer there it is i forgot i put this in the ice bucket melted in there pretty good i put this guy in the ice box there so we could shrink it a little bit and that will help it drop into place all right we have our race got a couple ice cubes still stuck on there let that guy off real quick and while it is still nice and cold set that guy down and there and she's still gonna need to be tapped in there oh oh no pressed right in nice and cold so once that heats up it will kind of expand back into place and we might actually have to take it out again later because we need to check some clearances that are involved with that shim underneath it if the diff isn't uh in its right spot we might have to take a little bit more material off of that shim all right boys picking up where i left off on the hatch's transmission it's actually been a couple days i was trying to get more done on it uh the day i was working on it when you saw me cutting that window case but i had to come to a stopping point a lot of the bearings and some things i needed from the stock transmission were not cooperating but i got everything i needed now we have fresh bearings into our billet case here and right now what i'm getting ready to do is i'm getting ready to kind of rough assemble this thing for the first time with the window case it's still gonna have to come apart for some final measurements i realized i'm still missing a tool that i'm going to need before i can fully seal the deal here but i have everything i need to at least get it together make sure everything's operating correctly and make sure i have it assembled right send some pictures to aaron and the guys make sure you know i'm doing everything i can correctly and then i'll pull it apart for a final time take final measurements and once everything checks out it will be done and ready to go and then we'll put the uh non-cut case back on here that i have to pull off the other transmission still and it will be done and a lot of you guys say you like to see all of this stuff you know the little uh ins and outs of what we got to do here so you better like this video because i've been showing you guys all the little details i can uh while i assemble this thing even though if i showed you everything this video would be freaking five hours long um so yeah where did i leave off this is the counter shaft out of the transmission i just pulled apart the only thing i had to steal off of this guy was the nut up here and i already got that uh snugged down onto the new counter shaft we have two brand new bearings on this guy down here uh these are the shift forks and i have those kind of resting in place onto our new dog box gear set right there and i have the billet case up on these two by fours just because the input shaft just ever so slightly uh pushes past the uh lip of this so if it was flat on the table the input shaft won't go all the way down blah blah blah blah blah let's put it together we gotta start with the diff that guy is right and here is our wave track lsd and this is the second gear right here for the all-wheel drive that will go to our transfer case and we have that new race that i got put in there so let's start by dropping that guy in there without crushing our fingers just like that oh look at that boys she spins beautifully all right now the tricky part time to get the gear set with the forks into here uh there's two very important shims right here that go on top of this bearing right here where the input shaft goes there's also a seal down underneath this bearing and we have a brand new seal that goes around the input shaft so hopefully no leaks coming out of this transmission so let's go ahead and see if all this wants to cooperate with me today and slide her down in and i made sure to lube the end of our shift fork shafts never want to not lube your shaft before you go into a i'm just going to stop there oh we almost had her we're a little caught up now oh there she goes there she goes almost yep oh yeah we are looking good make sure those stay nice and lubed up we don't want any binding on our forks here that all looks good let's go ahead and slap this case on and we'll be right about there we're missing a space or two this guy goes just like that got our nut on there fresh bearings everything's looking good and then there is a brand new bearing that will go on top of this shaft right here i'm just going to reuse the one that's in our casing but when i go to measure everything i want to make sure i'm using all the bearings and all the parts i'm going to use just in case there's any difference between a remanufactured bearing and the oem bearing because i got the uh new one right here and that guy goes like that but we'll throw that on for the final measurements let's go ahead and get this case on i should turn this thing around because i realize you guys can't see anything and the window is on that side back there but we'll flip it around in a second i'll i'll grab the camera once i get this on there and show you guys how we are looking in there let's see this case wants to go on looking good so far i think i just need a rubber mallet get her tap down unless i can just do it with raw brute force yeah let's get a mallet all right so my shift works feel a little bound up i think that's what's holding us right now there we go see it wasn't just my hand because the shift works weren't lined up and get our shift mechanism on there see if this thing shifts and uh if everything's looking good i think we're going to call it a wrap for uh that until i get the tooling i need to final measure everything and then our transmission for the hatch will be complete and done get her back put back together but i'm freaking pumped it's looking good put it in the car run it let's go it would be sick to put a high speed camera right there and watch one explode right on the dyno or something just watch it shoot again but let's not do that for this one all right the case is on i got part of the shift mechanism put together i don't have the top piece on there but we only need that guy on just for some testing purposes the case isn't fully bolted down yet there's still some shimming and measurements that need done before final assembly like i was saying but yeah guys this is it you can see all of the inner workings with this window cut out of it and i did actually have to pull it back off real quick to throw the reverse fork on there you do need this it just kind of helps hold the fork in position but we got that back in there and right now it is in neutral so if you look right here spinning it with my thumb normally be the input shaft spinning in neutral but i don't got a extra hand to flip it right now and spin it from there so she's in neutral everything is looking smooth and good you can see the diff in there spinning as well so we are looking good and if we run it through the gears if i pull it all the way over this way this will be first in second gear so that's trying to go into it first but since it's a dog box just hitting on the dogs right there it's not a synchro box where it can just engage wherever you got to slowly spin her into position then we got first gear and then spin it a little more get those dogs out of the way so we can click up into second we have second gear and then you know we're all good there dogs grab go back down one and then this needs to come over just a little bit to the middle fork which will be we're not over there enough yeah oh i went too far over so that's our fifth and reverse one right there so we have no more fifth gear so fifth is non-existent but the reverse fork still moves up and down to engage reverse i just don't have the gear in there right now that is working so we just got to move her slightly over till i can find this slider right here kind of hard without the mechanism on there come over this way a little more there she is all right so there's third gear that's going to be the tricky one but we do have third working and then for fourth a little more bam fourth gear we got them all everything seems to be working perfectly and uh yeah it's gonna about do it i need a tool to finally get it together once and for all like i was saying but once i get that in it's just uh some little measurements and shimming and stuff that i probably won't show just because it's going to take some time but i can briefly explain it the day i get it all assembled but i'm glad to have made a lot of progress i learned a lot of ins and outs about the transmission and exactly how everything needs to go together it has a cuff built in right here so these gear sets can't separate under that high load and this box right here has been proven to go a 770 in aaron's car so it is a stout unit it has held up and i'm just really excited to get the hatch back up and going and i know you guys are wanting to see it up and going as well but we have a long ways to go the hatch needs some love and uh yeah made a lot of progress on this transmission the last few days and i would definitely have liked to drop a video when it was just done and ready to go but sorry it's been a few days since we have uploaded we've just been getting parts and you know doing all this nitty gritty stuff trying to get these things together and not gonna lie we definitely took a couple days off to go ride the jet skis and that's why my nose is so sunburned but you know you gotta take a couple days off sometimes we are doing everything ourselves in shop we do not have someone else doing this stuff for us so you guys are gonna have to hang out while uh we get this stuff done hope you guys appreciate that you know we're over here still turning wrenches doing it all learning and uh getting this dog box together for the hatch i'm freaking pumped so that should be coming here soon and as you guys saw we are making a whole bunch of progress on the minivan tearing completely into it so version three of the odyssey should be pretty rowdy anyways that's gonna do it for this video guys we have much more content to come we have a new project we just picked up which i'm very excited about and you guys will see that here pretty soon and other than that i hope you guys enjoyed this video we will see you in the next one youoh shoot boys we got some new wheels and tires going on the old cummins here check these things out as you guys saw we got some nittos for waggo back when we got new wheels and tires no it's not it better not be that's why we didn't show it in the last video i mentioned that we had some new wheels and tires that i was going to show you guys in a sec but we didn't have the not as bad as the driver side secondary rubber yeah it's not great though so we need to go get an alignment and uh you know get that taken care of but we got some brand new wheels and tires to throw don't have to we're going to lose anything out of the way 200 horsepower turning these monsters what's really the price of looking cool all right row dozing down the interstate honestly i'd worth all final measurements and once everything checks out it will be done and ready to go and then we'll put the uh non-cut case back on here that i have to pull off the other transmission still and it will be done and a lot of you guys say you like to see all of this stuff you know the little uh ins and outs of what we got to do here so you better like this video because i've been showing you guys all the little details i can uh while i assemble this thing even though if i showed you everything this video would be freaking five hours long um so yeah where did i leave off this is the counter shaft out of the transmission i just pulled apart the only thing i had to steal off of this guy was the nut up here and i already got that uh snugged down onto the new counter shaft we have two brand new bearings on this guy down here uh these are the shift forks and i have those kind of resting in place onto our new dog box gear set right there and i have the billet case up on these two by fours just because the input shaft just ever so slightly uh pushes past the uh lip of this so if it was flat on the table the input shaft won't go all the way down blah blah blah blah blah let's put it together we gotta start with the diff that guy is right and here is our wave track lsd and this is the second gear right here for the all-wheel drive that will go to our transfer case and we have that new race that i got put in there so let's start by dropping that guy in there without crushing our fingers just like that oh look at that boys she spins beautifully all right now the tricky part time to get the gear set with the forks into here uh there's two very important shims right here that go on top of this bearing right here where the input shaft goes there's also a seal down underneath this bearing and we have a brand new seal that goes around the input shaft so hopefully no leaks coming out of this transmission so let's go ahead and see if all this wants to cooperate with me today and slide her down in and i made sure to lube the end of our shift fork shafts never want to not lube your shaft before you go into a i'm just going to stop there oh we almost had her we're a little caught up now oh there she goes there she goes almost yep oh yeah we are looking good make sure those stay nice and lubed up we don't want any binding on our forks here that all looks good let's go ahead and slap this case on and we'll be right about there we're missing a space or two this guy goes just like that got our nut on there fresh bearings everything's looking good and then there is a brand new bearing that will go on top of this shaft right here i'm just going to reuse the one that's in our casing but when i go to measure everything i want to make sure i'm using all the bearings and all the parts i'm going to use just in case there's any difference between a remanufactured bearing and the oem bearing because i got the uh new one right here and that guy goes like that but we'll throw that on for the final measurements let's go ahead and get this case on i should turn this thing around because i realize you guys can't see anything and the window is on that side back there but we'll flip it around in a second i'll i'll grab the camera once i get this on there and show you guys how we are looking in there let's see this case wants to go on looking good so far i think i just need a rubber mallet get her tap down unless i can just do it with raw brute force yeah let's get a mallet all right so my shift works feel a little bound up i think that's what's holding us right now there we go see it wasn't just my hand because the shift works weren't lined up and get our shift mechanism on there see if this thing shifts and uh if everything's looking good i think we're going to call it a wrap for uh that until i get the tooling i need to final measure everything and then our transmission for the hatch will be complete and done get her back put back together but i'm freaking pumped it's looking good put it in the car run it let's go it would be sick to put a high speed camera right there and watch one explode right on the dyno or something just watch it shoot again but let's not do that for this one all right the case is on i got part of the shift mechanism put together i don't have the top piece on there but we only need that guy on just for some testing purposes the case isn't fully bolted down yet there's still some shimming and measurements that need done before final assembly like i was saying but yeah guys this is it you can see all of the inner workings with this window cut out of it and i did actually have to pull it back off real quick to throw the reverse fork on there you do need this it just kind of helps hold the fork in position but we got that back in there and right now it is in neutral so if you look right here spinning it with my thumb normally be the input shaft spinning in neutral but i don't got a extra hand to flip it right now and spin it from there so she's in neutral everything is looking smooth and good you can see the diff in there spinning as well so we are looking good and if we run it through the gears if i pull it all the way over this way this will be first in second gear so that's trying to go into it first but since it's a dog box just hitting on the dogs right there it's not a synchro box where it can just engage wherever you got to slowly spin her into position then we got first gear and then spin it a little more get those dogs out of the way so we can click up into second we have second gear and then you know we're all good there dogs grab go back down one and then this needs to come over just a little bit to the middle fork which will be we're not over there enough yeah oh i went too far over so that's our fifth and reverse one right there so we have no more fifth gear so fifth is non-existent but the reverse fork still moves up and down to engage reverse i just don't have the gear in there right now that is working so we just got to move her slightly over till i can find this slider right here kind of hard without the mechanism on there come over this way a little more there she is all right so there's third gear that's going to be the tricky one but we do have third working and then for fourth a little more bam fourth gear we got them all everything seems to be working perfectly and uh yeah it's gonna about do it i need a tool to finally get it together once and for all like i was saying but once i get that in it's just uh some little measurements and shimming and stuff that i probably won't show just because it's going to take some time but i can briefly explain it the day i get it all assembled but i'm glad to have made a lot of progress i learned a lot of ins and outs about the transmission and exactly how everything needs to go together it has a cuff built in right here so these gear sets can't separate under that high load and this box right here has been proven to go a 770 in aaron's car so it is a stout unit it has held up and i'm just really excited to get the hatch back up and going and i know you guys are wanting to see it up and going as well but we have a long ways to go the hatch needs some love and uh yeah made a lot of progress on this transmission the last few days and i would definitely have liked to drop a video when it was just done and ready to go but sorry it's been a few days since we have uploaded we've just been getting parts and you know doing all this nitty gritty stuff trying to get these things together and not gonna lie we definitely took a couple days off to go ride the jet skis and that's why my nose is so sunburned but you know you gotta take a couple days off sometimes we are doing everything ourselves in shop we do not have someone else doing this stuff for us so you guys are gonna have to hang out while uh we get this stuff done hope you guys appreciate that you know we're over here still turning wrenches doing it all learning and uh getting this dog box together for the hatch i'm freaking pumped so that should be coming here soon and as you guys saw we are making a whole bunch of progress on the minivan tearing completely into it so version three of the odyssey should be pretty rowdy anyways that's gonna do it for this video guys we have much more content to come we have a new project we just picked up which i'm very excited about and you guys will see that here pretty soon and other than that i hope you guys enjoyed this video we will see you in the next one you\n"
