Creating Crystals that Glow like Fortnight's Gravity-Defying Rocks
Welcome to How To Cook That, I'm Ann Reardon, and today I want to make gravity-defying crystals from Fortnite. Yes, I'm still playing the game. On the map where the meteorites hit, there are lots of divots with gravity-defying crystals, also known as "hop rocks," in them. If you use one of these at like this, it can do huge bounds as you jump. I'd love to try that in real life well as long as you don't hurt yourself when you fall back down of course. If you missed my Fortnite treasure chest cake, I'll link you to that at the end.
But today I want to make crystals and I want to make them glow like they do in the game. A quick search on Google for foods that glow under black light brings up this long list, so it's off to the shops we go. First on the list was pineapple juice, it said that that glows with a blue color. That will be cool. Next was something water; there are so many waters, is sparkling water soda water? I think it was tonic water that one says it has quinine in it and I'm pretty sure quinine is supposed to glow. So we'll get that. Maybe I should get a tin of actual pineapple just in case the juice isn't real pineapple juice and honey apparently glows yellow, I'd like to see that.
And also said some energy drinks if they contain vitamin B2 let's check the ingredients this one has riboflavin, that's vitamin B2. Riboflavin is destroyed by heat though so it's not going to help me make crystals but I'd still like to see it glow. That should do it...that's enough stuff to experiment with, let's pay for all of that and then home we go. You'll also need a backlight and you can get these globes from most hardware stores now, so they're not hard to find.
So let's test out the ingredients. This is soda water; hmm ... it doesn't glow but I didn't think that one would glow so we're all good. Let's try the pineapple juice yeah that doesn't glow either! Let's put the backlight right up against it...no it definitely is not glowing. Let me try the pineapple juice from the tin, and see if it glows. And then let's try the tonic water; maybe that will work.
After some experimentation with different ingredients, I found out that pineapple juice doesn't glow under black light, but a special mixture of tonic water does! I was not expecting this to happen as we didn't have any tonic water in stock, so it was fun to see how we can use other ingredients in the future. The trick was using tonic water and making sure there were no bubbles.
Let's make some clear crystals that glow under black light. In something like this that I want the crystals to be clear, crystal-clear. So, I'm going to use gelatin sheets. Both of them do exactly the same thing but the sheets have less flavor and they set clearer than the powder does, so in something like this that I want the crystals to be clear; crystal-clear. So, I'm going to use these sheets.
Put the sugar and the water into a bowl and microwave until the sugar is completely dissolved. Then take your gelatin sheets and squeeze out as much water as you can and add those into the hot sugary water. Give that a stir around and you could add flavoring here or coloring if you wanted to but I want mine to be clear. Now, let that bowl to cool to room temperature.
Now, let's add in the tonic water, hmm, I should have let that go flat first look at all those bubbles; never mind, I'll just tip it through a sieve to get rid of most of the bubbles and the rest should settle. So that can now go into the fridge to set. Now, I'm just going to bake some cupcakes to put them on and make some crushed Oreos for the dirt.
Cut a meteorite-sized hole in the centre of each cupcake then add in some warmed chocolate buttercream and spread it up around the edges and then dip that into your crushed Oreo dirt, they're ready for the crystals. Lift your sweet tonic water jelly out of the tin, and use a sharp knife to cut yourself a strip.
Now, carefully cutting towards the counter, cut the corner edge off and you need to do that on each side; then cut that piece in half because it's a bit too long and cut one end into a point so that it looks like this. Then you can add those to the cupcakes or you could make one big cake and spread them all around.
They look pretty good but they look even better with the lights off and the black light on.

Let's put the backlightright up against it ...no it definitely is not glowing. Let metry the pineapple juice from the tinthat's not glowing either who wrote thisarticle?none of these are glowing! Let's swap forthe energy drink with vitamin b2 in itnope that's not even slightly glowingthis is terrible. Not even the honey glowsthat is such a disappointing list. If Ichuck 🇳🇿a piece of white paper behind ityou can see the backlight is definitelyon and working because the white paperis reflecting that backlight so you cansee it looks like it's glowing but noneof these things are glowing so verydisappointing. We've got one left to tryand that's the tonic water ... yay it glows! So you can't buy anything else it'sgot to be tonic water. Okay let's figureout how to make this into crystals.Firstly I'm going to pour the tonicwater into a pan I love how it glows andthen add lots of sugar. Wash down thesides of the pan and let the waterbubble away now it's gonna take a whileto get this up to the right temperatureto make hard candy. To check if it'sready I just take a spoonful and drizzleit into some cold tap water ... see how itjust sinks to the bottom at the momentand it's still really soft when you putit on your spoon ... that's how it's goingto set when it cools down. So you know bylooking at this it's not ready. Wait afew minutes more and now see it looks abit different it's starting to hold itsshape ... it's thicker if we feel it it isthicker but it's not crack hard it's notthat firm yet. Now normally as soon as itstarts to go slightly caramel coloured itwill set rock-hard in the waterinstantly but this is not set which isunusual. I think there might be somethingin the tonic waterit's interfering with the candy making.I'll leave it a couple of minutes moreif I leave it any longer this sugar isgoing to taste so burnt it's alreadylooking a really dark brown which is notwhat I wanted and it's still not set. After I leave that to cool completely itis still flexible it's not rock-hardlike it should be and to top it off itdoesn't even glow anymore oh man nothingis working today! 😳Let's try using gelatin to make crystalsinstead ... so we'll need sugar water tonicwater gelatin sheets and more water todissolve it in and I'll put all theserecipe quantities on thehowtocookthat.net website for you andthere's a link to that below. I get lotsof questions about why sometimes I usegelatin powder and other times I use thesheets? Both of them do exactly the samething but the sheets have less flavourand they set clearer than the powderdoes so in something like this that Iwant the crystals to be clear ... crystalclear 😂... so I'm going to use this sheets.put the sugar and the water into a bowland microwave that until the sugar iscompletely dissolved then take yourgelatin sheets and squeeze out as muchwater as you can and add those into thehot sugary water. Give that a stir aroundand you could add the flavoring here orcoloring if you wanted to but I wantmine to be clear then you want to leavethat bowl to cool to room temperature. Then add in the tonic water hmm I shouldhave let that go flat first look at allthose bubblesnevermind I'll just tip it through asieve to get rid of most of the bubblesand the rest should settle.
