iOS 15 (Unscripted Test Drive) - Krazy Ken's Tech Misadventures

The New Weather Icon Has My Attention

I'm going to tap on there and see what's new. As I was browsing, I noticed that the weather icon has caught my attention, so I thought I'd give it a try. When I did, I saw some animations that I wanted to check out. Like when it rains, the water droplets will actually bounce off the interface. It's a small detail, but it's a nice touch. And speaking of rain, this is another thing I heard about, where it will tell you when rain is going to happen and it will actually push an notification to your phone when rain is about to start. I think that's a nice new feature.

As I looked at the weather icon, I also saw that Hell's temperature was looking good with a high of 75 today. We also have these maps, which look like some sort of heat map or something. If I go to see more, let's see what we can do. Ah, yes. So this is the temperature screen. Wow, there's a lot going on here. I'm guessing we can turn on different layers, air quality, precipitation, and temperature. There we go.

Now that I have the layers turned on, I'm seeing all sorts of information about the weather. It's really cool to see how much data is available in this one place. But wait, oh crap! That's really cool. So now I know when Hell, Michigan is going to get some rain. Well, can I scrub this? Ah, yes. Now that I've removed the alert, let me just go back and look at it again.

Let's take a look at Safari. There's been some controversy behind the redesign, so I thought I'd see how bad it really was. When I opened up Safari, I saw that we now have an edit button and the toolbar is on the bottom. This has been getting some hate during the beta days, but I heard Apple was doing a lot of tweaking, and I believe you can also do tab groups.

I decided to create a new tab group just called "demo" to see how it works. You can have multiple tabs in this group, and each one is separate from the others. It's like having multiple windows open at once. But what I really want to show is how you can customize the start page of Safari. Yes, you can turn on certain things and all that, but you can also put a background in there as well, which I think is pretty cool.

I just have this setting turned off for now, so let's go somewhere. Let's go to the computerclan.com website. It's a very simple website, but it looks good. The mobile responsive design works really well here. Okay, so that doesn't look too bad. Let's go to a new tab here and see what we can do.

I decided to open up MacRumors in Safari now. When I opened the site, I saw that you can swipe on the tabs to go back and forth between them. It's a nice feature because your thumb is usually more comfortable sitting near the bottom of the screen. Some people were complaining about this new design, but I think it's actually pretty good.

I learned a little tip while browsing Safari today. You can hold on the tab button to close all the tabs. But now you also have a new option for moving the tabs between groups. It's really convenient to be able to do that. And you can summon private browsing mode from this menu as well, which is useful for important things like logging into your 401(k).

I took a quick break and something interesting just happened. I got a notification popup from my security camera even though I'm in Do Not Disturb mode. So I set up the security feature on my iPad to let those notifications come through, but I never set it up on my iPhone to do so. It looks like it synced, which is pretty surprising.

Let's check the settings and see why this happened. Ah, yes! It added my security system to that list. So if I'm sleeping and Do Not Disturb mode is on, it will mute everything, which is usually good because I don't want to be woken up. But if there's someone at the door doing something stupid at three in the morning, even though I'm 10 storeys away, it's hard to get here, and I want the alert to tell me.

So now that I've found out why my security camera notification popped up, let's go back to Safari and see if we can find any other new features. Ah, yes! There are focus settings here, but in Do Not Disturb mode, it looks like Apple added my security system to the list. Ever since they introduced Do Not Disturb mode, I really wish they would have put this feature in here.

Yes, there is the feature that I believe Android has had for quite a while that I really wish Apple had. It's called focus settings, and it allows you to concentrate on certain things even when your phone is buzzing with notifications. It's a great feature that can help you stay focused, especially when you're working or studying.

As I continue to browse through Safari today, I'm seeing all sorts of new features and improvements. From the weather icon to the focus settings, there are so many little details that make a big difference in how we use our phones. And I have to say, it's pretty cool to see all these updates come together like this.
