CES 2020 and Samsung's Booth: A First Look at the Flagship 8k TV
We're here behind the scenes, before it even starts, to give you a first look at one of the coolest TVs you'll see this year or anywhere. Follow me as we take a closer look at Samsung's flagship 8k TV. This isn't their booth at the CES floor, but rather their special first look event.
The star of the show is Samsung's flagship 8k TV, which is more about design than resolution. Take a look at this model, the Q950 TS, and notice how it has an extremely thin bezel around the edge. It's hard to tell that this isn't just a picture hanging on the wall. The company says they've been able to reduce something called the black matrix around the edge of the screen, which allows for this incredibly thin design.
This 75-inch model looks crazy, considering its size. With such a large screen, you'd expect it to be bulkier, but not with this TV. It's almost like it's made of picture frames or something! The company claims that it's literally 99% picture on this TV, meaning that the bezel is so thin that it's barely noticeable.
The trade-off for such a design is still unknown. We've all heard about edge-lit TVs and how they achieve their slim designs. But in this case, the Q950 TS has a full array local dimming backlight, which is usually found on non-8k TVs. This suggests that Samsung is willing to push the boundaries of technology to achieve its design goals.
One thing is certain, though: this TV's picture quality will be top-notch. The company says it has the best picture quality of 20/20 on this model, with full array local dimming and extremely bright Qi LED for color. This means that the colors will be vibrant and accurate, making for an immersive viewing experience.
But what about 8k resolution? Samsung's talking up their 8k processing this year, which includes improved AI artificial intelligence processing to analyze video quality and do some fancy upconversion tricks. However, there's still no 8k content available for general consumption, so we can expect a lot of upscaling from 4K or even lower resolutions.
The Q950 TS is all about the design, too. Notice how it looks sleek and streamlined when viewed from the side? That's due to its slim depth, which makes it almost invisible on a wall-mounted setup. The company says they've managed this by using a one connect box with all the necessary inputs (HDMI, tuner, etc.), making it easy to run cables from the box to the TV itself.
You can see how well-designed this TV is when you look at the profile they have set up on the wall next to it. It's almost like a work of art! The speakers are placed on the back, giving it a sleek and futuristic feel. This design is what Samsung is selling as the premium experience, where you're paying extra for the privilege of owning such a stunning piece of technology.
Of course, we can't forget about the other 8k TVs that Samsung has up its sleeve this year. The Q900 is similar in image quality to the Q950 TS but lacks some of those slimming features. On the other hand, the Q800 is an entry-level model that might bring down the price point to a more affordable level for consumers.
As we look at prices around Black Friday, it seems like Samsung's 8k TVs are still going to be quite pricey – around $22-25 hundred dollars for that 65-inch size. If they can manage to squeeze out some more design magic and make those TVs thinner (or even cheaper), then this could become a very exciting market indeed!

the scenes before it even starts to give you a first look at one of the coolest TVs you'll see this year or anywhere follow me this is Samsung's flagship 8k TV but it's really not about the 8k is the resolution this thing is about design this cute 950 TS has an extremely thin bezel around the edge look at that you can barely tell that this isn't just picture hanging on the wall now when I first saw this I walked in the room I go this I've never seen really anything like this they say it's as thin as they've ever got it they're able to reduce something called the black matrix around the edge of the screen here this is a 75 inch size really looks crazy because again with that large of a screen you get such a thin effect along the edge here that it really does seem like it's all picture and it kind of is they say it's literally 99% picture on this TV so mentally they're saying those TVs are 95 they have thin bezels yeah sure but again this is really really thin now of course you're gonna say oh wait with this really thin bezel you know what am i trading off and I said the same thing I thought it might be edge lit no this TV actually has a full array local dimming backlight Samsung is telling me that they're gonna have the same great picture quality the best picture quality of 20/20 on this TV so you have full array local dimming extremely bright Qi LED for that color of course 8k resolution Samsung's talking about their 8k processing this year they've improved their 8k AI artificial intelligence processing to do a deep learning to actually analyze the video quality do sum up conversion tricks and magic to make it look even better we'll see of course that's really important because there's no EK content there's really nothing you can watch an 8k right now couple of exceptions YouTube but for in general you're gonna be watching a lot of 4k and even 1080p on this TV so that upconversion really really important again though this TV is more about the design than the picture quality you come around to the side here you can see it's really really tight to the wall and again that super-thin depth they're able to do that because they have a one connect box that actually has all the inputs HDMI the tuner all that good stuff it's external so you just run a wire from that box to the TV itself you can have this TV be on the wall with just that one connection to it we'll go over here and show the TV and profile they got one on the wall and then they got this guy sitting here kind of sitting out in space you can see as you walk by the edge that it's just super duper thin so again this is not an OLED TV this is Q LED LCD based technology they've slammed it together it's kind of got a little lean here on the side they've got these speakers on the back even the whole back side is really slick looking the Q 950 TS is really all about the design that's what you're paying for extra on this now quickly we'll talk about Samsung as some other a.k TVs that they're selling this year are in 2020 there's the Q 900 and the Q 800 the Q 900 a similar image quality to the Q 950 but again not that thin really cool bezel around the edge or it's got a thicker cabinet as well doesn't have that one connect box and this is the Q 800 kids the entry level on their 8k TVs in 2020 they're gonna say there might bring that price point down to where they had their very best 4k TVs in 2019 so I looked at prices around Black Friday 22 to 25 hundred dollars for that 65 inch size if they can get theirs 65 inch 8k down there maybe they're 55 will be even cheaper that's it's not cheap a case still gonna be really expensive in 2020 but it's some significant improvement so anyway that's what Samsung is doing with the 8k TVs this is the Q 950 TS I'm David Katz
