The Guy Who Crashed the Original Motor: A Conversation with Chris

We're ever curious about the guy who crashed the original motor, and I'm not yeah, I mean thankfully, now the maybe you'll hear from him. That's what this goes all over the world baby. Hey that's the guy the part my monitor, I mean I'm more curious about the person who sold me the stock 135 that turned into this. What would they think? Oh yeah, that's true. Now with a car guy where they just somebody bought a BMW and you know, I think there were a car guy yeah, yeah, that's pretty cool. So you haven't contacted him no well maybe he maybe he'll see you.

What was his first name, human? I don't remember his first name; he was in the military though. Oh ok so he was traveling very cool very cool let's take this thing for but it feels like a factory prototype car. I only wanted to modify it about as far as like a factory Porsche gt3 Aria so I wanted to keep carpets back side well, I'm a doesn't move at all does it? That's pretty amazing. It's crazy to these carbon wheels; they're seriously insane like how much they affect ya everything from accelerating to breaking you know a lot of the obvious stuff you'd expect but due to the material itself they actually make this car and this is a great v8 I mean it, you know you had six grand even get the end of the revering you got another 2044; they go. It feels like solid villain but no squeaks or rattles you know from you know the the hard bushings or any of that kind of stuff yeah not too many. Oh get used to the noise in a radio, it's actually pretty quiet when you put it six yeah I'm here anything at all oh what fun is man the gearbox is unmodified right yes as a standard gearbox see any ship during hard mounting how many wells you that you put on uh since you got means if you did the modification since putting the original 4-liter probably 10,000 miles on them but the Dinan stroker that's in this car now actually came out of another car mine I had any 92 in three with the Dyna motor in it so the Dyna Stroger in this car actually has about 30,000 miles.

Oh okay wow, this thing's looks pretty weak I mean it really is a racecar for the road but the cool thing is it's all the attention to detail you know I always get these cars and you know they got the hard plastic bushings or something they squeak and they right. I mean it's really really tight nicely put together, it's a little loud for me, a little noisy because this is somebody want to drive all day and afterwards that be going like this on the side of my head but but then of course you get used to that noise. It really does sound fantastic I imagine when you get up we never really got out of 3rd gear in this thing because your redline is what almost 8,000 rpm so all the powers between what five and seven and around there so on the way back we'll put them take it on the fruit put in six gear up in the quiets down sit down a lot but it's really it's really impressive and boy you would think this was a factory car if you looked at it when you especially under the hood no wires dangled, a note you know no quick ties holding things down everything is professionally done I mean pretty pretty pretty amazing. It's a beautiful beautiful job; it's it's it's really something.

And everything here works all your all your switch gear your radio your air conditioner you know there's no knobs hanging off the side or gauges or auxiliary switches it's all factory stuff it's a it's a great job come on let some more twist these and then take it up on the highway it's not bad on the three West I'm loud at all Hey even in sixth gear from 2500 it's like you're shredding Calico when you get on it it's got a great that's the best sound. So Chris, well what a treat this was but you know this car was not made for the butterfly challenge this working this for kerosene is the most uncomfortable thing I'm sitting on inside words see he has one of these kind of - yeah, it's just one of those deal but other than that is but it's a fantastic car; it's it's just so well put together. I mean that's really 99% of it is build quality on most of these things and this the build quality and this is really good Margo thank you very much my friend pretty exciting so I got to do more BMWs hey when you get that mm to bring that down okay that's what I want to see that's my arrow as a 2002 but I'll take one of these see you guys next week.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enfeels like solid villain welcome episode Jalen's garage today's featured car 2008 BMW 135i but hardly stock because you'll find out in a minute I'm glad we finally got a chance to do another BMW know we've done an awful lot of BMW motorcycles but for a while there would you we just didn't seem to have many BMWs coming through our band trying to find a nice tii or early 2002 to do because when I used to work at a BMW dealership well foreign car dealership we have BMW that was the hot setup in a class this is the hot setup now and this is a really hot setup this particular car it's not mine it belongs to this gentleman Marko it's it's Aero right Marco come on in buddy how you doing good how anxious and of course thank you for having me okay so let's say you bought the car used correct yep okay it's a 2008 you bought in what 2011 and obviously you've got a lot of modifications to the car the most obvious the roll cage the rear wing the spoilers these carbon revolution wheels these are he's a pretty amazing aren't they they're amazing you know they came here about three or four years ago and with one of these wheels at the time those wheels are twenty thousand dollars apiece and I thought we got to sell them to maybe Ferrari guys he says well working with little equipment manufacturer well it turns out it was Ford and those are on the Mustang now yes but somehow they've got the price down from $20,000 a wheel down to something reasonable so it's pretty amazing and they finally out on the market now the run vehicles like this one too and that saves you about what we cut about six pounds oh just six pounds over corner okay well it was actually totally changes the dynamics yeah really does okay okay all right now so you got the car did you drive it around stock for quite a while they decided this wasn't enough or did you start modifying it to mean you got it when I bought it you know I never really imagined it would go this far I did like modifications myself and I just sort of enjoyed it as a street car it really wasn't until I got introduced to performance Technic um a shop in the Bay Area that the car really became a build that's sort of around the time I started driving it more on the racetrack and started to feel the limits of the turbo motor started experience heat soak yeah things like that and that's when I decided I wanted to take the car and make it more track oriented is this your first BMW cause you wanted me to BMW guy I've always wanted to own a BMW this actually is my first car my father he had a 635 and I know it was always something that I aspired to right you know it's a big deal when I got this car and uh you know I loved it now just as much as the first day I owned it it was this a stock color when you got it this is the stock color that parties haven't changed yeah that's the only thing you haven't changed just about it it uh that might be the only thing that really hasn't JK all right let's get to the real interesting part now the normal motor in this car is what the twin-turbo inline six what was the horsepower on that uh stock it was about 305 horsepower okay what's pretty good crank that's a pretty moving car but you've got rid of that and put one in here we put an S 65 out of the 92 m3 okay so that's uh that's the big v8 yeah and what's the stock cars for on that stock horsepower at the crank is 414 okay and if you modify the engine significantly is it fairly stock well we drove that four liter around for a while and then we decided we wanted to take it even further and we put a dining 4.6 liter stroker motor in it alright and what kind of horsepower that make that ones 502 great 502 ed the crank ok very good I'm curious to see how you got it in there was a bit of a had they done this swap before was this the first one they tried how that worked this was the first V a swap that performance Technica done okay um I mean even before we actually went into doing the project it's something that we all talked a lot about we all did a lot of research on it we all you know looked at a lot of things I remember when I was you know first talking about it Joe actually drove from performance ii I actually went he measured he's like it would fit and then you know we kept talking about it did some research and bought the parts and it would you get the engine you buy an engine from BMW did you find a wrecked one how does that work well at the time we started the project these motors were extremely expensive here in the states so we actually found a dismantler in england who had a 92 with rear damage and he took everything apart and actually sent it to us Wow okay that's trusting no you got a bunch of parts in the mail don't know if they're gonna work and they turned out to be legit yeah very cool well let's open the hood and see how tighter tighter fit this is okay that looks like a tight fit in it yeah um it's pretty tight but it also you know fits clitty pretty clean we have the OEM cowl on there I mean you could barely get a windy at me to Wendy's or McDonald's single patty hamburger through there that's pretty good well okay so how do you change the plug to change the plugs we actually have to lower the front subframe in the motor hole in the foot you can't cut a hole in the side of the wheel well now unfortunately that's not you alright a Sunbeam tiger and used to have to they had a door in the under the transmission under the driver's side you get in to open the door and you could reach and get it what's the problem doesn't worry you're not with this one so you got it - okay so you don't want to change plugs to offer no look put it and how much heavier is this over the straight six you know the engine itself is only about 15 pounds heavier um but what is heavier is in the transmission and will be a axles which we also swap so all the running gear is also from an m3 on this okay because they obviously the other the six-cylinder transmission wouldn't take this power correct okay you know that's really interesting because we go back to really old cars like Duesenbergs and the transmissions were bullet that sinead him as strong as they could they didn't really know the tensile strength of things it's made it as strong as they could so consequently you could put those transmissions behind any number of different motors okay so he saw engine transmits he totally took all the parts from that car in England huh pretty much and the car was built by to BMW master technicians or exactly and they really you know took a lot of pride in this car and they really wanted everything to look and work like a factory car so it has air conditioning it has MDM it has power mode everything works like a factory car with this building and everything is being done so it it should fit one another know it okay and what are the breaks oh the breaks off that car in England as well the breaks are stopped tech trophy kit they're actually made for the e92 m3 as well due to the axle swap so big focus on this car was to build a car that not only could hold up in a show but also on the track it's to sort of approach both those worlds and try to build something that's not take the attitude that one or the other that it has to be exclusively shower exclusively performed but it is a street car it still is a street car it's all street-legal okay very nice any carbon fiber in here or the fenders this is all the factories there's no factory body we heard you or the Buddha sexualize yeah it's carbon oh that's carbon fibre okay what is the car why do you know car weighs about thirty to thirty okay and one of the car came out of way around 3,800 in e92 m3 they're generally around 37 - okay it's not substantial weight saving okay change the brakes change transmission change the engine Wow okay and any other body modification a just a bull wing on the back so that's a GTS style wig so BMW when they made the you 92 GTS they had a wing in that style they also fit it on the 1m safety car for MotoGP so that's why we chose that wing now I noticed your gear shift lever sits much higher than it would normally why is that why do you like the big rally style so the CAE shifter it actually tightens up the gearbox a lot it's a lot shorter it's also nicer to have the shifter closer to the steering wheel it's also something when you're focused on the road you're focused on driving something that you can see and just reach over and shift the six-speed or five-speed to six six speed okay Wow I know the carbon-fiber accents though in the dash and everything is that new or is that that's a factory piece of carbon fibre we did do full carbon fibre replacement door cards okay the car the roof is well this car actually all 135 s in the United States had some roofs right but to keep the weight down and to enhance the balance of the car we actually remove the sunroof and install the carbon fiber roof wow they really committed to this thing rear seat is gone personally I got the rollbar back there rollcage have you been racing it how you been doing um you know it's really you know a car that I enjoy to just drive around on the track for fun but we do use it competitively in like tuner car battles and little time attack events for those events it's driven by the performance Technic driver Matt powers and it really says arrest me with all these stickers and stuff on here I mean you always say if you're a cop if this car is parked I'm probably gonna get given a ticket for speeding you get stopped a lot um I've only been stopped a few times you know a lot of police officers are car enthusiasts I know a lot um actually I've gotten really excited to see the car place and they've been so you've been lucky I've been pretty lucky pretty lucky okay well I meet boy it's just a beautiful bill that look has anybody from the factory seen it or contacted you do you hear from cuz you know what's so funny no matter what car you're into there's always those group of guys that just purists you've uh you've screwed it up you keep you messed around have you heard anybody anything they're you know this is an interesting car because while everything is modified is extremely modified car that audience the realest engine purists a lot of them actually really take exception and like this car right right um well it's all BMW because it's only imported ellis evan in there yeah yeah when when the 1m actually came out from the factory it was it did not have it had a turbo motor it had a motor out of a standard production car so a lot of the more purist you know guys who feel that you know every end motor has to be you know an S you know motorist and that isn't that this car is that car this car you know it is a smaller lighter in 92 m3 and it's a pure n/a 1m you think the fact you will ever build this version of this car with the v8 engine and I'm sure at the factory they talked about it yeah I you know I'm sure they wanted to build it but I think it would have not fit into the product line yeah I mean if this was 1963 and it was America this would be a Pontiac and that would be the B the grand prix and you created the gto you just took the big engine from the big car and put it in the smaller car and it seems like almost common sense but General Motors was against it because everything affected the sales of this if you wanted the big engine you had to buy the big car you had to buy that you know and they never thought that they think like when they made the GTO they thought they'd only sell 5,000 well the first year they sold like 30 or 40,000 so yeah that's what kind of so maybe this will spark the factory to kinda come on yeah I wish BMW would make any cars again boy you did a nice job that looks factory to me yeah we styled them after the OEM flares and yeah finding that rig because I just I looked at I went oh no I thought maybe it was an illusion to me but yo yeah now I see that you say that point it the workmanship is really incredible how long it take to do this I it's been probably it I want to say it maybe a little over three year project and did you ever get discouraged I mean was there ever a point where God or down here today is the most like James is gonna fit in there cuz you know how this is that sort of one of these four stages I don't know what it is but one of them's always that massive depression when you realize you're over here you're way over your head and this doesn't line up with the input shaft and I've been through that nightmare in so many projects did you ever get discouraged at any point ah I don't think I ever really got discouraged um you know thankfully there were a lot of people involved in the project a lot of partners so I think a lot of that pressure was sort of distributed by everyone involved but there were you know there are a few moments originally when I purchased the motor it's very scary to buy that much of a car will you buy my testing car from another country totally sentencing yeah and that all these parts come in and then custom goes what is this then you pay some stupid Duty based on you know which is the price of all the stuff I mean so I remember being pretty stressed out when I sent the payment and then waited and yeah and it finally arrived and even just unpackaging it I still felt that but um thankfully everything came in well we're ever curious about the guy who crashed the original motor I'm not yeah I mean thankfully now the maybe you'll hear from him that's what this goes all over the world baby hey that's the guy the part my monitor I mean I'm more curious about the person that sold me the stock 135 that turned into this what would they think oh yeah that's true now with a car guy where they just somebody bought a BMW and you know I think there were a car guy yeah yeah that's pretty cool so you haven't contacted him no well maybe he maybe
