Review - G-Drive Mobile Pro Thunderbolt 3 SSD - up to 2800 MB_s!

The G Drive Mobile Pro SSD: A Potent MacBook Air Companion

Boasting read speeds up to 2800 megabytes per second, the G Drive Mobile Pro SSD makes for a very potent MacBook Air companion. Check out our video now and find out why this little guy is apt for 4k workflows and higher.

This drive uses SanDisk flash storage module inside and of course, SanDisk is also a subsidiary of Western Digital. Now, of course, this is no normal external drive. If you want just a standard external hard drive, you can get those two from G Tech. They make those for instance. Here is a G Drive mobile USB C Drive, it's a 4 terabyte hard disk drive, so it has a spinning disk inside that offers a whole bunch more storage but it's a lot slower than this little guy right here.

The G Drive Mobile Pro SSD is primed for 4k video, 5K video even up to 8K video. It's bus powered, so it's totally portable and makes it a great option for the 2018 MacBook Air now that that machine has Thunderbolt 3. Inside the box, you'll find some documentation to help you get started. The getting started guide shows you how to set it all up very simple; all you do is connected thunderbolt 3 cable to your computer and that's it.

So, you see the little blue portion of the drive between those slits? That is the aluminum core that houses the flash storage module and keeps it passively cool. And of course, these modules generate a lot of heat because they're moving bits at such a high speed. So, it's imperative that these drives have good thermal design in order to sustain read and write speeds.

Here you can see how the dryer compares to the size of the iPhone 10's max due to cooling requirements. Obviously, this is going to be a little bit bigger than your typical SATA 3 SSD. In front, you can see the USB type-c port; it's a Thunderbolt 3 port however. So, you will need a Thunderbolt 3 Mac or PC in order to utilize this drive.

Now, on the opposite side, you see the activity indicator. I'm never a fan of these activity indicators but this one actually isn't that bad, not overly bright and obnoxious. Let's go ahead and run a Blackmagic Disk Speed Test here. You can see this thing is blazing fast; right speeds close to 22 hundred megabytes per second read speeds get close to 2,500 on the Blackmagic test with quick pinch sequential. You can see it's close to that 2,800 megabytes per second read up speed on the product packaging.

Now, compare these speeds to what you get with the internal SSD; Granite is the smallest SSD on the 2018 MacBook Air and you can see the G Drive is just a beast but benchmarks only tell so much. How does this drive perform over sustained periods of time in real-world scenarios like in Final Cut Pro 10 editing 4k video? Well, it should be no surprise that this drive performs excellent but you will pay for those beastly qualities. This thing starts at about $600 for the one terabyte model that we tested here.

Now, as far as speed is concerned, the closest competitor is the Samsung X5; it is also a very excellent external dry bus-powered. It boasts similar speeds and you can get it for a little bit cheaper than the G Drive Mobile Pro SSD. The drive features durable shock resistant build quality and features the 5-year limited warranty.

I think I prefer the look of the Samsung X5 over this Drive but you can't deny that either drive is going to be great for 4k workflows and above. Either will make for an awesome MacBook Pro or air companion. What do you guys think? Let me know down below in the comments.
