Adam Savage's SXSW Makers Scavenger Hunt!

The Concept Behind the Puzzle Pieces

The puzzle pieces are hidden at different locations around Austin, and their location has a connection to an idea about making once all nine pieces are gathered. The people who find each piece are supposed to show the world that they found it first by taking a picture of themselves with the piece and stating "I got this! I found it!" This will lead to a gathering of all the puzzle pieces, where they will come together to form a giant culmination.

The Goal of the Project

The goal of this project is to make different disciplines connect and interlink. The artist, who created these puzzle pieces, loves the idea of vectorizing patent drawings and admires the engineering that goes into creating Legos. They are excited about the possibility of sharing their designs with others and want people to be able to work together on this project.

The Progress of the Project

There has been a lot of brainstorming going on in the artist's workshop, as they have made significant progress on designing the puzzle pieces. The artist has discovered that the Lego drawings are not just aesthetically pleasing but also offer an opportunity to design an aesthetic language and translate it from 3D to 2D and back again. They believe that this visual language can help people understand how things work in space and two-dimensional perspective.

The Influence of Fine Art

The artist's fine art background has played a significant role in their approach to designing the puzzle pieces. They have drawn inspiration from composition, movement, and recession in space, which helps create a sense of depth and dimensionality. The artist wants the puzzle pieces to be visually appealing and engaging, with each piece having its own unique character.

The Laser Cutting Process

The artist has been working on a laser cutting project, using a specialized equipment to cut out small pieces from wood. They have shown the finished products, which are impressive in their complexity and detail. The artist is excited about the possibilities of sharing this technology with others and wants people to be able to try it out for themselves.

The Design Files

Once the design files are released, people will be able to edit them and customize their own puzzle pieces if they want. This will allow the community to contribute to the project and create something truly unique. The artist is excited about the prospect of seeing what people come up with and how they will interpret the designs.

The Final Assembly

Once all nine puzzle pieces are found, assembled, and cut out by the participants, it will be possible for them to unlock their own versions of the design. This will allow people to work together on the project and create something that is truly collaborative.

The Future Plans

The artist envisions a future where makerspaces and art institutions will be using these puzzle pieces as a way to celebrate different disciplines. The final product will be a beautiful piece of art that showcases the connection between various fields of study. The artist believes that this project has the potential to inspire people and bring them together through their shared interest in creativity and innovation.

The Scavenger Hunt

To find the nine puzzle pieces, participants need to follow a series of clues, which can be found by clicking on the link provided at the end of the video. Each piece will lead to a new location around Austin, where the next clue is waiting to be discovered. The artist wants people to have fun and enjoy the journey of solving the puzzles, as it will ultimately lead to a beautiful and unique final product.

The Reveal

Finally, the puzzle pieces will come together to form a giant culmination, showcasing the connection between different disciplines and creative fields. The artist is excited about this moment and wants everyone to be a part of it. They believe that by working together, people can create something truly remarkable and celebrate their individuality while contributing to a larger collective effort.

The Puzzle Pieces

Each puzzle piece has its own unique character, designed using an aesthetic language that translates from 3D to 2D and back again. The artist has used patent drawings as inspiration for these designs, which have been vectorized to create a visually appealing and engaging effect. Each piece will be made of wood, with the possibility of being painted or edited by the participant.

The Puzzle Pieces and Their Locations

The nine puzzle pieces are hidden at different locations around Austin. The location of each piece has been carefully chosen to reflect the artist's vision for this project. The participants need to follow a series of clues to find each piece, which will lead them on an exciting adventure around the city.

The Puzzle Pieces and Their Significance

Each puzzle piece represents a specific discipline or field of study, such as engineering, art, or design. By working together to assemble all nine pieces, people can see how different fields intersect and connect with one another. The artist believes that this project has the potential to inspire creativity and innovation in people from various backgrounds.

The Puzzle Pieces and Their Potential

Once the puzzle pieces are found and assembled, participants will be able to unlock their own versions of the design. This means they will have the ability to customize and edit the piece according to their individual preferences. The artist wants people to take ownership of this project and make it their own.

The Conclusion

The puzzle pieces are a reflection of the artist's vision for collaboration, creativity, and innovation. By working together on this project, people can see how different disciplines connect and intersect with one another. The final product will be a beautiful piece of art that celebrates individuality while showcasing the collective effort of its creators.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey everybody its Adam from tested alongside my good friend and amazing maker Jenny Schecter flow hello we are speaking to you from the past because I am at South by Southwest right at this very moment we are working on a project specifically for South by Southwest and in promoting making Jenn has been working on a scavenger hunt that we are looking to gather people together to help solve the scavenger hunt do you want to tell us where we're at what's what what you conceived of it yeah so we've been thinking about all the different disciplines within making in all these different ways that people can be makers whether or not they identify themselves as as that so it's more than just what people think of when they think of a makerspace like a 3d printer or a sewing machine yeah you could be a chef or a brewer of beer or you could be a quilter or you can be a performer a-any yeah right or anything all these different things where you're creating something out of something that wasn't there before so to sort of celebrate that and highlight all of these different maker cultures and disciplines we're gonna put together this this puzzle which is sort of a tapestry of all of those different ideas such a great idea you know how many pieces this puzzle has 999 pieces like the nine rings okay so we have everybody the nine and those are going to include some beautiful laser cuts that you've been currently working on yeah right now we're doing the research and finding out all this trivia and information that that information will be used to come up with clues a set of 9 ko9 clothes that which one that will reveal a location exactly in in Austin Austin Texas yeah where South by Southwest is so we're so where you are now around where you are in Austin these pieces are hidden at different locations and I will say that the the location of the pieces has something to do with this this idea about making once all nine pieces are gathered once the nine have gathered yes what happened to that well each of the people or multiple people that find a piece I think that they should I think they should show the world that they found it first so maybe like take a picture of themselves and say like I got this I found it and then they're all gonna come together and assemble all the puzzle pieces at the end and this lake giant culmination right this is our goal to make these different disciplines and and give them a big hug you guys that we're all working yeah and we're all it's all linked and interconnected and all the good things yeah I love the idea of vectorizing the patent drawings yes like you I love what you love then I love her line work you know as I do that the engineering of a Lego is astounding yeah the fact that they all fit together so well even 40 years 50 years later yeah incredible lately there's a lot of brainstorming to do you've got a lot of work to do we've got a lot to discuss and we're not going to reveal all the puzzle pieces but information right here mm-hmm right around here of is what you need to know to start this scavenger hunt what so long as we build the pieces you're going to be looking for and look for our clues it has been a week since Jen and I met and talked in San Francisco we're now in Baltimore at open works this is incredible the Lego drawing has made incredible progress has it started to speed up your ability to figure out what the layers of this Lego is sort of my building block for lack of a better word to figure out how to manipulate the layers so that it would read in three-dimensional space the way we wanted then I think it's amazing I really want to call out that you're not just designing aesthetic layouts you're also designing an aesthetic language and this translation from 3d to the 2d of a patent drawing back to 3d of the layers of wood I can see how much work you're probably doing in here to think about this new visual language to come up with something like that there's a lot of influence from my fine art background in this so understanding how things work in space and two and three point perspective and and compositionally like how are things moving forward or receding in space when you look at it as an object the e vocation that you are hoping for the the simple material that draws you into the complex construction it's all happening here like I feel nostalgic looking at this I see what you're playing with I was going to show you show you some of what I've been working on with the laser cutter you want to see your lifting process it smells like work it's hard not to lose some of these these smaller pieces I've had to go into the part yeah open it up into fines get into the belly of the beast yeah all right so we take these over there yeah let's um okay so let's let's put it together this goes there right oh my gosh it's really it's so much more exciting to see it happening as opposed to just sitting layer just layers sitting on top of each other and when you think about everything at this point I think we're gonna keep naturally we're not gonna add any color or anything like that I think dope I don't think we add color I think you're right about using the woods for the values and that if people want to paint theirs I'm really excited to see what kind of schema they come up with I'd be interested to see - once the design files are released people could if they wanted to they can edit them they vetted themselves customized or if they feel strongly that we that you left something out or that something else should be included oh my god I can't wait this is gonna be such a beautiful piece of art when it's all we do I'm hoping they're lots of you know people and maker spaces will then make one and have it up on the wall and celebrate all these different disciplines so just to be clear we're talking from the past these nine pieces are now completed and each one is hidden in a different location in Austin you'll need to decipher some clues to find them and follow this link below here on this video to find those clues and unlock the secrets to the nine pieces once they've been found once the piece has been assembled people will be able to unlock their own and cut their own versions of this that may be what I find most exciting I'm super excited to see what people come up with and they can even edit the files and edit themselves you hear that get started go find those pieceshey everybody its Adam from tested alongside my good friend and amazing maker Jenny Schecter flow hello
