"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: engood morning everybody welcome to a very cold day in the canyons I got an alert on my car there was 37 degrees up here and then we stood around getting to know each other shivering wishing gun of us had arrived so we could stay in our car with a heater on um this is Adrian he was the lightest dressed of the bunch super cool thank you for driving up here so tell me what this is and tell people what so Mini Cooper John Cooper Works has BC racing coilovers the John Cooper Works Pro exhaust and I got new speed wheels and then the federal RS are tires sweet the John Cooper Works is obviously the more hardcore you know yeah it's a pretty significant step up from the s in terms of price but I think this also had the 25 inch more horsepower this has this had 220 horsepower and torn 36 foot-pounds of torque is a pretty significant step up from the s and what's always been weird about John Cooper Works cars for me is they're very good at what they do and they're also very expensive so like they do two things they make BMW many a lot of money and they also are really rewarding drivers cars I think some of the best front wheel driving experiences I've had have been in jcw cars so I'm curious how this compares the last one I drove was the video with Matt where we entered the service take classic and I made sandwiches and balloon animals while he drove you haven't seen that go to youtube.com slash drive and check it out then you'll know what we're talking about and let's take this for a drive and see how this compares because this is the f-15se 6 yes no is the r53 i think last one was so this was more BMW ish more BMW much short first here a little roar to it nice so that is we met at some of the BMW guys going on a little induction Corral I this'll sound strange but there's also a Mustang GT with us today and the induction sound I feel like I'm hearing that car if it was like a different like like two roads away it's like a deep drum kind of thing steering is and reactive as ever the steering on these cars has always been like really quick and heavy but in a good way you know not overly heavy like very connected and on the edge of dirty I've done a lot of highway miles in our camera man's past mini cooper s and you can change lanes really quickly let's say like it would go straight and it was steady on center but it was you know it was just a breath away from wanting to change direction I've also a very good GG cart ball but noisy this surprisingly quiet inside given the rotor on we're on a pretty bumpy cracked road as you can probably see from the front camera and we're going to switch to a smooth Road six seconds but it's really it's really and it is significantly quieter in here Thad's mini compress and that's the more BMWs I think they made it better like more sound and even stuff they worked on the the NVH I mean you know it looks like a mini you got all the cool switch gear that I've always really liked I'm glad they moved the speedo in front of the driver I know that they did that a while ago but in the beginning when it was over here that was very strange roman turn off the traction control oh right constraction control does auto blip downshifting and now i have to do the work myself which is the whole point of having an efficient these seats are awesome they've always been awesome but these are such good seats I really like that they don't look like every other sport seat in the world I think a lot of cars share a design language in seats where they're kind of angular and aggressive looking and highly functional bolstering is great all that stuff but these have you know it mimics the minis exterior that kind of round friendlier design language and yet you know super deep bolsters really comfortable not too stiff these are nice man there's a killer main reasons I'm wounded so that's it is that the night so that a function of the aftermarket exhaust you put on or is that I'll do that they all do as long as you put sport mode on it they all pop and bang right you've ever now it's like 4,000 like oh here do it you're gonna do that the whole way aren't you that's too bumpy that's something to get centered in this because it's got a nice front lip your car is very clean looking it's really minty minty fresh the paint looks really good so I don't want to damage it pulling off on a bumpy turnout what what did you have before this and why did you choose to buy this I had another many cameras at the f55 which is the same carbon for doors and someone TiVo me I got it was like this time is actually this time last year I got my insurance money and then I got my tax money I was like might as well get the better one this time instead of like but before that had a Prius from this Latrice it was a huge joke no kidding I just was also your first manual transmission transmission car ever seems like a pretty good I'm trying to land the third I'll learn on yeah I'll Drive in this one but the dealer taught me kind of the dealer tired right well like I told him I never driven the car and he was like did you that's amazing so you walked up and you're like oh I'm thinking about buying this but asterisk I don't know how to drive it so if you could just show me real quick how to drive a manual transmission I'd love to test drive this and then if I don't buy it I will leave you with the front clutch yeah exactly I can get turning rails cuz of course super super smooth power and not really peaking man and carries more speed these cars these are so fun I think a lot of people are gonna ask and wonder how is this compared to the TST Fiesta ST is also an incredibly and I think what I was thinking of last night is that this car it's more like if you had a block of ice on an ice rink it just feels really solid like it doesn't lean as much as the Fiesta did it doesn't like dive and squat as much I mean the Fiesta got better with coilovers but it still had that was built into it because it was a playfulness there was a softness to the suspension that was meant to talk to you kind of show you how much g-force you're getting whereas this just stays real flat they do so you put BC coilovers on this car and you know a gcw car is already a little bit stiffer than an S it was 30% stiffer than that okay but I had the coil over so my last car so I was like might as well just throw okay so what would what did you feel between the JCW suspension and then when you put the pcs on it was less was that like a Bentley even lastly and yeah a little less lead in the note I it just seems more like planted week around like a like a feel okay I mean this because it feels incredibly planning and it would be its I guess I'd be like a bold move where you're like I'm gonna get the most hardcore mini there is and then I'm gonna take off some of that hardcore this is where we got really good luck today with traffic I'll tell you what going slow it one way and then going in slow please turn right maybe you got the truck for the road it looks like you are maybe they're right or you just cutting the turn oh you don't know where you are actually that really doesn't know where he is I don't know and I don't know if he knows what he's doing or he knows or he lives here and he's long as though he knows exactly what he's doing so be the elephant in the room with a mini and you brought this up because your dad has one is they kind of rattled apart don't they so this has how many miles on plaintiff knows in 20,000 okay so it's still fine have you have you seen it's almost like it's almost like seeing your own like parents or grandparents goal or like do you look at your dad's car and hear rattles and go oh is that where I'm gonna go yeah am I gonna have that same lip that my grandfather had what what has gone wrong with his car the transmission just the clutches blew out like a loose ago so we're getting a new transmission every single bushing be replaced every pushing yeah I feel like every is so likes like like see ratalie and it's like I've changed all of them oh actually we got the car for free mom who gave it to us it's kind of like a project for us now okay so it's not his primary car yeah it's so it's more of like a fun car that you're willing to put a little money and work into it has 233 kilometers on it it's a Canadian car yeah yeah my uncle bought it from Canada okay 2003 interesting that is a giant slab of rock that fell down recently we're gonna head back to base but there's something about these it's always the question of like this car started $31,000 and for that money you have a lot of options as far as playfulness and practicality and knocking on the door I think a Mustang g/t starting to like 33 obviously you can save yourself like $9,000 they don't sell but it's a lot of money for a jcw and when you start throwing options in as we talked about before and the other cars be driven you can get these up into the mid-40s with you know you choose enough Sun roofs and enough Union Jack's you know and enough like I don't know meat pie heaters and you can get these things like way expensive for what you're getting man that quarry is so good though it is a ton of car and you put the seat sound it holds a lot of stuff I like this car so much better than a Fiat 500 I don't care if they have the same interior volume or not just based but you know technically it never looks that way they feel more stable that the steering feels better I like the CD position better you know like Fatih is our camera guy he's six five in like 250 and he owned a mini for three years and we could both drive it equally comfortably to and from San Francisco for big muscle shoes we can put camera gear in the back there really practical part and they're really fun and they also I think are doing the nostalgia design at the top of the heap you know I think the Mustang now is getting more and more aggressive and it still has a couple elements that hark back to like the 60s cars but they're definitely moving in a new direction Camero is it you know I guess inspired by the gen1 but it's pretty pretty aggressive and different angles happening they still have it the kind of great mix of yeah the basic look of like friendly round but now they just look like they they're playful there's something about the design minis that has always looked like a forward leaning dog like hey let's I'm ready to go play exactly so go in the JCW is like if you gave cocaine doable you know the slowest dog around is suddenly not that slow the base minis have a great job of fun chassis an S is a great car until they hit eighty thousand miles and then you kind of have to bring them to the vet and put them down and then the JCW is just a more hardcore it--there's you got this car used and I think that's the way to get a job that works maybe it's one where everyone could afford it I was actually about to buy a Focus ST I was like about to buy it but then I was like we need go test drive this one more in like the break feel everything the clutch feel I just felt way better that this has automatic red mashing I was like for traffic you need that yeah that's helpful so that's why I got it all the pieces feel good the brakes feel good the steering speed is right I think I was so caught up going fast like we've kind of missed some of those notes the power band is so flat it almost it's it lacks drama yeah cuz I Drive my my girlfriend's hunt is like fate and I push the gas and like why does it do this but yeah it's just so smooth it's just I mean it's really even and it lacks punch I was expecting actually given the numbers but I know that this car is you know capable of like 160 miles an hour again watch the video I'm making sandwiches while Matt goes over 60 miles an hour and we get thrown out of the event really good-looking car very clean car I hope you keep it right up until you decide it's falling apart hope it doesn't happen to you I think it's a great purchase so I'm gonna bet you ready and make it race car okay bald man bold man no big ears that's the goal oh that would be badass when that happens hit me up again we'll definitely see the evolution of this thing because there's some really cool highly modified minis out there dude thank you very much for bringing up me I
