New EU 'hate speech' rules - badly needed or bad policy

Today's Tech News: EU Code of Conduct and More

It's Tuesday, May 31st, 2016, and we've got some exciting news from the BBC. Several leading tech and social media heavy hitters have signed on to an EU code of conduct intended to combat hate speech online. Microsoft, YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter have all agreed to the terms of the pack, which includes removing posts with hate speech within 24 hours after it appears.

This move aims to combat the growing problem of intolerance, xenophobia, and hateful personal attacks in the online world. Unfiltered comment sections and social media can become a toxic stew that suppresses free speech, but regulating it is not the same as suppressing it. According to Karen White, Twitter's Euro Head of Public Policy, "There is a clear distinction between freedom of expression and conduct that incites violence and hate." She adds that the new EU guidelines are aimed at addressing the latter, while still allowing for the former.

We're interested in hearing your opinion on the new EU guidelines. Are they needed to combat hate speech, or are they too oppressive? Do you think the measures taken by these tech giants are sufficient, or should they go further? Leave your comments below.

In other news, we've got a sneak peek at Seuss's latest robot creation - the Zen Bow. This adorable robot looks like a rolling version of an old Apple iMac and features a smiling face that is also a touch screen. While it can't quite keep up with washing dishes or other household chores, it can help you cook, remind you to take some meds, chat up a youngster via video call, read to your kids or even adults, take photos, play music, control smart home devices, and get embarrassed by a photographer (price ASA). As for the price, we're not entirely sure - only that it'll be around $600.

But if you're into building your own hot rod computers, there's some exciting news to look forward to. Intel has just released its latest CPU, the Extreme Edition Core i7 6950 X. This miniature wonder packs 10 computing cores with a three-gigahertz base clock and boost function of up to 3.5 gigahertz. It's based on a 14 nanometer process called Broadwell II, which gives it some tricks up its sleeve - including appearing to have 20 cores to certain software apps by using Hyper-Threading.

The new CPU will work with current X99 motherboards, so if you're ready to build that ultimate desktop, you'll just need about $1,800. Heck might as well get to check out the rest of the day's tech news at Digital Trends and be sure to check out our Facebook page and YouTube channel. We'll be back again tomorrow.
