A Day at the Track with J Watson and His 1,600 Horsepower GTR

We spent the day at the track with J Watson, where he took his 1,600 horsepower GTR out for a spin. The car was running in rear-wheel drive mode due to a central differential failure, which made it only run on rear wheels, but that didn't stop Watson from putting it through its paces.

The first test of the day was a drag race between Watson's GTR and two other cars, one with 1,000 horsepower and another with 650 horsepower. The car with 1,000 horsepower took off slightly faster than Watson's GTR, but the difference wasn't significant. However, when it came to a rolling start, where the cars were locked in second gear from 30 mph, Watson's GTR was able to pull ahead initially. Unfortunately, this initial advantage didn't last long, and Watson found himself struggling to keep up.

Watson acknowledged that he may have "cheated" a bit during the roll-off, but it wasn't intentional. He explained that sometimes, when you're used to racing, your instincts take over, and you might jump the start or use the initial burst of speed to get ahead. However, this isn't what we're looking for in a proper test, so Watson promised to do things right next time.

The second part of the morning's testing involved another rolling start, but this time from 50 mph in third gear. The goal was to see how well the car would handle and if it had any issues with its braking system. However, as soon as Watson hit the brakes at full speed, he realized that his brake discs were badly warped. This caused a big shake in the steering wheel, which made the ride very uncomfortable.

In an emergency stop test, where Watson aimed to bring the car from 70 mph to a complete stop within a short distance, the wobbly steering wheel did indeed make its presence felt. However, as it turned out, the warped brake discs were the culprit, and Watson had to learn a valuable lesson about maintaining his brakes.

A strange smell emanated from Watson's car during one of the tests, which was described as "burning" by J Watson himself. Although he wasn't sure what caused the smell, it didn't seem too serious, but then another highly toxic smell appeared later in the test. This time, there were no doubts about its origin - it was definitely something wrong with the car.

After the testing was complete, Watson's attention turned to a new and exciting project that he announced would involve more than 1,600 horsepower. It seems like J Watson is always pushing the boundaries of performance engineering, so stay tuned for updates on this one!

In between all the high-speed shenanigans, we found out that Watson has a book of excuses for when things go wrong in his cars. He joked about having a big book of them and acknowledged that sometimes, there might be reasons why certain parts need replacing sooner rather than later.

with all that power it runs on ethanol it's crazy but it's expensive however you could spend quite a bit less than get 1,000 horsepower so that one next to me cost £35,000 in terms of upgrades on top of the price of the GTR as a result as well as 1,000 horsepower you got 1,150 newton meters of torque now they achieved that by doing things such as fitting hybrid turbos to the car they had to strengthen the gearbox they changed the rods and the Pistons so they could coat with extra power but the engine block still the normal 3.8 L V6 that you got from the factory next to that though is the most basic car so all that's had done is an ECU remap it's had a new intake and a new exhaust that's it but that has liberated an extra 100 horsepower so instead of the standard 550 it had from the factory it's now got 650 and 840 newm of torque instead of the usual 620 Newt M the GTR has from the factory right I think I got all the stats right there's probably some more information about the cars but you don't really need to know it what you do need to know is that I've been lent these cars by J Imports who builds them also a chap called rain who Tunes them and this particular car is been anybody is it let's hear the last car the 650 horsepower one it actually sounds more powerful than the th horsepower one the uran M this is an old build done six years ago and that one's a more of a modern build so that one runs a 4 in titanium exhaust oh he's got 4 in rather than 3 and a half okay fair enough a bit more you know it's handy to have is say anything I need to know about launching this Jurgen just make sure that you go in manual mode and make sure you've got all off in this settings like I showed you yeah um once you're in manual mode in firstly hold the brake fully down slam the accelerator build the boost up for about 3 seconds and then pin it when we're ready to go and then hold on okay let's do this wa it got really hot in here the temperature's at 30° for some reason something else was wrong like it was on fire who has the bling airon at 30° oh Hamed okay that was scary it just started to drift and sway you just got to be brave and keep it going straight I think I won you're G what happened to you I wasn't as quick as you guys off the late but we'll go again right let's have another go this I felt like a better launch but the car sort of like didn't like it towards the end it was like might short shift so then what exactly happened well the 1600 horsepower GTR 1 unsurprisingly completing the standing quarter mile in 9.2 seconds the 1,000 horsepower GTR came second with a standing quarter mile time of 10.3 seconds and the 650 horsepower GTR took 11.3 seconds to cross the line unfortunately after we'd run our drag races the central differential in the 6 years ago and it's never broken some 30,000 Mi on the tune still fine so it shouldn't break today unless I'm cursed let's not be cursed okay now we're going to a rolling race the cars locked in quicker than me obviously on booze quicker you're ahead for a little bit and then you weren't ahead at all and then you got smashed I was well ahead of you at the half mile I might have cheated a little bit not intentionally I could have jumped at like two and a half I don't think it really makes a difference though does it well let's do it properly come on get level ready you level don't yeah that's enough 170 oh very shaky steering wheel I think this guy needs some new brake discs they're clearly warped which is Handy cuz of the next test we're going to do right let's do a brake test 70 mph line full emergency stop you another drill you another drill let's go do it there comes the line and Frank I think my wobbly discs did make a difference a big difference by the look of it
