Gaming on an 11-year-old $160 Apple iMac

**Playing Games on an 11-Year-Old iMac: A Surprisingly Good Experience**

I decided to put my 11-year-old iMac, which I purchased for $160, to the ultimate test. I booted up the Mac and ran through some common gaming tests to see how it would perform.

First, I turned on GeForce Now, a popular cloud gaming service, and set it to run at high settings on 1080p. However, the framerate counter didn't work, which was surprising. I later found out that this was likely due to the vsync being off, which is not ideal for a gaming experience.

But despite the framerate counter issue, the iMac performed well in terms of graphics quality and performance. The textures and details looked great, even at high settings. I also noticed some tearing, but it didn't seem too significant.

I decided to test the iMac's performance with a game that has a built-in FPS counter, Fortnite. I limited the framerate to 60 FPS and dropped the settings a bit, which resulted in a very consistent 60 frames per second. The gameplay experience was smooth, and I would definitely consider this a playable system.

The next challenge was to see if the iMac could run Crysis, a notoriously demanding game. Unfortunately, it's not officially supported by Mac OS, so I had to use a workaround. I downloaded Crysis 2 instead and used Steam Link to render the game on a more powerful PC and stream it over to the iMac.

To my surprise, Crysis 2 ran surprisingly well on the 11-year-old iMac. The FPS counter pegged at 60 FPS was a testament to the system's performance. However, I encountered an issue with sound not working properly. According to Steam, there should be audio, but it doesn't seem to be coming through.

In conclusion, playing games on an 11-year-old iMac is more than just a novelty – it can actually provide a good gaming experience. The system handles game streaming services well and can even run demanding games like Crysis with some compromises. However, there are some caveats to this experience, including the monitor's reflective surface and compatibility issues with older Mac OS.

**A Final Note**

I have to say that playing games on an 11-year-old iMac has been a fun experience, despite some quirks. The smell of homemade vegan cheese may become overwhelming after a while, but it's a small price to pay for the ability to play modern games on such an old system.

WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: eneverybody knows that Apple and gaming mix like my sinuses and spring it just leads to a bunch of pain and tears but today I'm gonna try and game on an iMac and it's not gonna be some fancy mkbhd iMac either it's an 11 year old iMac that I paid a hundred and sixty dollars for so let's try and put it to the ultimate gaming test so apparently this is an iMac I don't know if I'm entirely comfortable having this in my house because I feel like now I also need to make my own vegan cheese's for some reason but in all honesty it's actually a pretty good looking device it's surprisingly heavy considering the size and I guess it's because of all of that aluminium it's got a 20 inch display in it that's 1080p with some Core 2 Duo in it and yeah I don't really know what it's got in it will discover that together a bit later around the back we've got this black plastic which is honestly a complete fingerprint magnet as you can see it's pretty much impossible to keep clean and then it's got this very sturdy aluminium stand which has a little bit of movement but not a huge amount now the actual fit and finish of the device is really good especially for an 11 year old PC it's actually kind of crazy wait can I call it a PC is that allowed on this side it's got this well concealed DVD drive so that you can I don't know convince yourself that all of the CDs you bought over the course of your life wasn't a complete waste of time and then finally it's got an okay rear i/o it's more than enough for me to plug several overpriced peripherals in and then we've got a power button on the other side now on the base are these instructions and it's essentially telling me to open up that slot right I mean I don't really have a choice at this point it looks like that's where you upgrade the RAM the only problem is that little screw is very stripped so even though I have the correct screwdriver size here yeah I'm not gonna be able to get that open which is really unfortunate because I really want to see what that looks like as you can tell the IMAX screen is comically reflective it's very difficult to capture on film actually because all of the lights just show up in it and stuff so now let's fire it up I haven't actually seen that it works the guy that sold it to me very suspiciously took it to the back of the shop to power up for the first time so I don't know what he was hiding there but let's switch it on and see if it works the keyboard lights up so that's a good sign oh there we go screen is very dull I thought IMAX were supposed to have really nice panels in them something is really gonna annoy me is there's a speck of dust stuck behind the glass here so it's powered up and it seems to be working that's pretty exciting I don't need any assistance here well actually I probably do need assistance I've never used the iOS before but yeah let's see what the specs are of this system let's just get a confirmation of what we're working with it's probably under general right no where would they about this matter isn't it isn't about this Mac thing there we go now in true Apple fashion it doesn't tell you exactly what Core 2 Duo it is but apparently it's a 2.6 6 gigahertz one we've got 4 gigs of ram and we've got an nvidia geforce 9400m 256 Meg's of video ram so it's a real beast I'm interested to see whether or not Nvidia go will actually work on this now the first thing that we're gonna do to test the gaming experience on this beautiful slowpoke is just run a game normally on it so I've decided to go with half-life 2 because this is always my not demanding test game we're running it at the native resolution of the display and yeah in the menu we're sitting at about 38 frames per second now I just want to apologize for the tiny FPS counter it's apparently really difficult to get an FPS counter on Mac OS but we're sitting at about 68 frames per second 70 around there and it's running really badly the input lag is pretty terrible and there's like quite a lot of rubber banding this is not an ideal gaming experience I mean this usually doesn't pick up on camera very well but it doesn't feel great at all and we're sitting at about 40 fps it's very starter II and it's a really yeah this is I mean it's playable but this is definitely not a great gaming experience by any margin let me actually try turn the graphics down a bit it's not really better now is it like it it doesn't feel different now this again is usually very difficult to pick up on camera but the input lag is atrocious and it yeah this I especially FPS games you can't play like this now unfortunately the solution to the gaming performance on the little iMac is pretty predictable and boring because I've done it before basically I'm gonna use GeForce now to stream games run on some godly gaming PC of Xerxes Aten videos HQ to the little lowly loser iMac so let's see how well the iMac handles GeForce now okay so as you can clearly tell the the framerate counter doesn't work with GeForce now for some reason oh I turned vsync off which clearly was a mistake but it runs very well this is it very high settings at 1080p you know the textures and stuff look great and I think with vsync on it would it would look better the tearing is a bit is a bit much um it performs fine like this is pretty good you could realistically play games on your iMac from 2009 so this is if you want to play like Steam games or GeForce now games now luckily Fortnight does have a built in FPS counter and now that I've limited the framerate 60 FPS and dropped the settings a little we're getting a very consistent 60 frames per second and yeah it's a nice smooth gaming experience now as you can see the game runs pretty well I would definitely consider this playable and considering the fact that this is a hundred and sixty dollar 11 year old Mac like yeah it's it's but that was a big starter there but that's the first time that's happened now that we've done some common garden gaming on the iMac and even played some newer more demanding titles with reasonable performance through some roundabout ways it's time to put the little iMac to the ultimate test because it's from about 2009 I think it's a valid question can it run Crysis now I immediately ran into a bit of a problem Crysis isn't officially supported by Mac OS and I didn't have any time to look for various workaround solutions and I just thought to myself what did I use GeForce now it's been working really well but clearly there's been some kind of custody issue because you're not allowed to run Crysis using GeForce now maybe the server's can't handle it I don't know but my final solution was just to use steam link to render crisis on a badass PC and stream it over to the little loser iMac the problem is I can never get Crysis to run on a Windows 10 PC so I decided to download Crysis 2 instead and this is what happened ok look at that we've got Crysis 2 running you know it's it's the game is running and there is an FPS counter up in the corner and it is just pegged at 60fps it's actually running very well although the combination of the very dumb screen and the fact is it the glass on the front of the monitor is essentially a mirror I can't see what's going on this I just see myself I just see the disappointment in my face about the fact that there's no
