Session Sunday 088 _ Maintaining possession of the ball

**Game-Based Scenario: Maintaining Possession and Penetrating the Opposition**

The session begins with an explanation of the game-based scenario, where two teams will face off on the pitch, each with the goal of maintaining possession and penetrating the opposition. The coach explains that this part of the session is focused on keeping possession but also trying to break through the opposition.

**Initial Setup**

To begin, the coach sets up the initial setup for the game-based scenario. "Okay, so we're going to go with 20 yards of width," the coach says. "You can increase that if you want to, to 25." The coach then explains that there will be 20 yards of depth in each area, and the goal is to create space for the players to move around.

**Locking Players into Areas**

The coach emphasizes the importance of locking players into their areas at the start of the game. "These players aren't locked in," the coach says. "We just remove that middle line there, and the players have got to try and move away from the opposite end of the opposition player." This means that when a team receives the ball, they will look to play into their own end players and then attempt to attack the other side.

**Players' Movement**

The coach stresses the importance of creating space for receiving players. "If all the players stay in here, it's too congested," the coach says. "What we're focusing on is leaving space if we occupy that space." The coach explains that when a player receives the ball, they should look to move and create space for another player to drop in and receive it.

**Transitioning Play**

The coach explains that when transitioning play, the Blues will run back here, looking for players to swap over as quickly as possible. "The reds obviously look to narrow make the pitch narrower," the coach says. "Blues looks open out secure that ball, then look to keep possession and go the other way." The goal is to maintain possession and play into different areas of the field.

**Maintaining Possession**

The coach emphasizes the importance of maintaining possession in certain areas of the field. "Every time they play into a player it's a goal," the coach says. "So you got a point every time they switch to play." The coach explains that players should focus on creating space and playing out of pressure, receiving skills, awareness of space, and awareness of what's going on around them.

**Tempo and Awareness**

The coach stresses the importance of maintaining a high tempo during gameplay. "We're focusing on our players' movements," the coach says. "Our ability to play out of pressure. Our receiving skills as well and also limit our touches." The coach explains that awareness is key, making sure that players are aware of space and what's going on around them.

**Role Swapping**

The coach explains that role swapping will be a crucial part of the game-based scenario. "These two players can swap over with players in the middle every few minutes," the coach says. "Giving players different roles." The coach also emphasizes the importance of players on the outside, who are trying to get away from the opposition player.

**Quick Passing**

The coach explains that quick passing is key to making it difficult for defenders to follow the ball and stop passes from getting through. "The quicker you play, the more difficult it's going to be for the defenders to follow the ball," the coach says.

**Final Animation**

The coach concludes the session by explaining that there will be a final animation before concluding the week's session. "We'll now move into our final animation," the coach says.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enwelcome to session sunday hi guys it's jack edwards and in today's video we're going to be taking a look at maintaining possession of the ball but before we get into this week's video make sure to leave us a like and subscribe and if you missed last week's video click on the link above okay now moving into the first part of this week's session we're going to be focusing on a pattern of play focusing on maintaining possession of the ball by moving it quickly so we're focusing on facetime passes ability to open out and play forward as well but before we get into it let's have a look at how many players we're working with this week and the equipment that we're using now in terms of players for this week we're going to have 12 players in total so for this part of the session you're going to split your group into two groups of six if you have 14 players unless they have 10 players you can just have five players in each group okay or you can have let's say seven in each group and if you've got an odd number one team just have more than the other now in terms of the equipment for this week we're going to be focusing on using balls bibs cones and then if you have poles or mannequins to use okay in this area this that would be great to use as like an acting defender so it means that the players try and get away into space a lot more often now in terms of the setup for this part of the session okay from the start point here into display in the mannequin here okay is gonna be 15 yards okay and then it's going to be five yards between the the pole or the mannequin here in this in this cone here okay which gives us 20 yards in total and then a further 15 yards into here okay so we've got 35 yards in total and then there's a five yard gap in between there in terms of the width okay you want so from the middle area here so wide you want between 10 and 15 yards each side so you're going between 20 and 30 yards or you can just be a little bit in between that as well you could go to 25 and have 12 yards either side again depending on the age group that you're working with you might start with 10 yards either side and then you might look to increase it to give a little bit more space now we're going to be focusing on this side okay until you can swap it over as well and work the ball quickly first time to play high and then combine it quickly to play forward now the play will start with the play in the middle receiving the ball this side okay of the pole or the mannequin and they're going to touch it up and across the open away okay so they're looking to protect that ball to then drop the ball into this player here so their movement is to want to pull out into this space here because they're going to go play it into them then it's going to get set back so this players come round in front of the defender to receive it back and then they're going to set it into space so we're playing around the opposition once this players receive the ball back for the second time they will look to play into the highest player here so they're looking to pull out into space to receive it and open up to change the direction now we're focusing on this player's movements okay it's moving to space to combine so they're playing one two this player then takes it into the space okay and plays back to the start now our movements the players just move up one each time so the start point moves into the center here the player's been by the mannequin goes out wide the play was wide goes high this player plays into there and then this player makes that run back to the start so we'll go through it again so we're starting here touch across the body that's the trigger to move out protect the ball by touching forward and then once you've played in okay kind of get round to then receive the ball again and set it into space whilst this is happening players start moving this player then moves off their cone or their pole receive it and open out okay to then combine so we want this player staying away from the ball and then coming into it and then go one two for this player to move on to to touch and then play to the player back at the start before moving wide to them be in a position to receive it again so after the session of time you can swap it over and go the opposite way as well if you wanted to like say you have the poles and the mannequins to use that'd be brilliant because it means it it gives the players something to reenact with the defender and tape that there's actually a defender there as well and if you do have more players and say had maybe eight or nine players you could have players before so you could have doubled up on satan cones and he could just be acting as defenders before they then go and be the passer and the attacker so that's another little way that you can progress it if you had more players we want to move into our first animation before moving on to part two of this week's session now moving into part two of this week's session we're now going into more of a possession big small side of game which is going to be focusing on working a ball out of congested areas to maintain possession now in terms of the setup for this part of the session we're going to have 30 yards width and 30 hours of depth which will be brought in five yards okay either side so you're kind of gonna have 20 and 20 in the middle with five yards for either eight floater on the outside so you're gonna have three teams of four again if you have more players you can just adapt it if you had 14 players you could then have two teams of five and a group of four on the outside and they can just swap over okay um now so the team who's in possession tries to use the floaters okay now one rule is once they play into a floater and it comes back in they have to complete a pass in the middle before playing back up to the floats which is encouraging our movement in the middle of the pitch okay to try and penetrate and go an opposite way now what you're going to do in terms of like if you want to make it competitive in the game it can be a set amount of passes for a team get a goal each time so it could be every five passes as a goal and then after ten pass it could go down to two touch after 20 passes it could go down uh to one touch or it could be that the floaters go down to one touch because we've got obviously a bigger area in the middle um but that's a little ways that you can try and set goals for the team for your group to work on and also a kind of test them with the technical ability as well and obviously checking making sure that they're checking shows and creating space to receive and play out quickly so if we say we start with the reds here they receive the ball it gets played into one of the floaters okay now this player receives the ball they can't play out to here so now do we need we need options okay on the ball so you could have a player pull notes into here play making space up wide player drops in and then we go one two and then they can play out because what if they don't end they've played a lot of pressures out in a game they played through the lines in that area because they broke into space and then they play them what do we need options on the ball again okay player can open out i think how can we get players making runs okay to support so now the player then receives it here and the spaces are closed off to play again now they can use the floater can they create space to receive it kind of create space by just moving players out which waters that create space for the players to come in and receive it gets played in then they can look to spin out player can receive into the space and play through again so what we're focusing on our players movements okay maybe not to receive the ball all the time but to create space for their teammates to receive the ball as well now the blues when it back so let's say the interceptor pass here okay they look to obviously then go from making the pitch nice and compact okay trying to congest it in that central area so then spreading it out okay so you get players making runs towards the ball players looking to create space for their teammates so then again look we make the pitch big in possession to create space for players to move in okay we get players open and out and then once like you say once it gets played into an area where we feel we're under pressure we need to play out into space there we go maintain possession of the ball then there's a trigger can players get on it open out to receive it and play in now if they haven't success in the middle the players they don't have to play to those players on the outside okay if they're keeping the ball in here okay perfect that's great but then can they look to play out because what does it do forces the reds to think about oh the ball's gone to the floor today and what you'll see is if that the team are keeping the ball the opposition team because they're chasing it back so much they'll start closing down the floaters even though they can't um win the ball back off the floaters by tackling them they'll start closing that down and what does that leave space for us to play out and then penetrate on the sides maintaining possession by being patient as well but also by playing quickly and recognizing the space that we can use we will move into our next animation before moving on to the final part of this week's session okay so moving into the final part of this week's session we're now moving into our second base the small side of the game-based scenario which is again focusing on keeping possession but also trying to break through the opposition as well now in terms of the setup for this part of the session we're going to go with 20 yards of width okay you can increase that if you want to to 25 and then in terms of the depth we're going to have 20 yards of depth in here and then these areas here it's going to be about 15 yards okay so you can about seven eight yards in each one or this one can be a little bit bigger than that one but i'd say equal it for now okay and it can even go to twenty you could have ten in each side but just depending on how much space that you have so we're gonna have four v4 in the middle and then these players are going to be locked into their areas to start with now our progression will be that these players aren't locked in and we just remove that middle line there and the players have got to try and move away from the opposite from the opposition player so that could be opposed to receive the ball and also after a few minutes you're going to swap over the two players on the outside with the two players in the middle now when a team receives the ball they're looking to play into their one of their end players okay and then look to go and attack the other side so then if they receive the ball in here the reds it can then get played in and then we're looking for this player's movement to be able to get away so this player in the blue can intercept the pass but he can't tackle and so when the ball comes in here they have to stay in their area okay to try and block the pass so what are we focusing on these players in here creating space to receive if all the players stay in here it's too congested okay and what are we leaving now here space if we occupy that space okay when a player then receives the ball we can then penetrate using that space to then go and attack to the side now once we play the past the last thing we want to see is players standing still so can i play even just take a few yards away to then create space for another player to drop in receive it and then when they open out it could get played across the pitch and then they can be involved again to receive the ball and play but now when we transition so the blues running back here we're just looking for these players to swap over as quickly as possible and then the reds obviously look to narrow make the pitch narrow okay and harder for the blues to play through blues looks open out secure that ball and then look to keep possession go the other way to then play into there every time they play into a player it's a goal okay so you got a point every time they switch to play okay to maintain possessions so they're focusing on maintaining possession in here and looking to switch the play to penetrate so they're breaking through the opposition again we're focusing on our players movements okay our ability to play out of pressure our receiving skills as well and also limit our touches when the ball comes into these areas here there's options to play through quickly can we do it yet one and two touch so it's our way our awareness as well our awareness of space okay and our awareness of what's going on around us as well making sure that our tempo is high and then as a progression like we say you can eliminate these areas here so these players are opposed there's more chance of a transition to go on for the players and then again these two players can swap over with players in the middle every few minutes to give players obviously different roles and again these players on the outside got a big role because they're trying to get away from this player here so they can be fake and they're moving so this play might receive it here they pretend to go this way to pull out to to i think to defend make the defender go that way and then kind of receive it in the space there utilize it to then go the other side and score again so the quicker you play the more difficult it's going to be for the defenders to follow the ball and be able to stop those passes going through we'll now move into our final
