Dangbei Atom Review - Tiny Laser Projector With 1200 ISO Lumens!

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enthis is dangbei's latest projector very small and compact as you can see it's called the atom and  despite its size it packs quite a bit in terms of features and especially the screen brightness  that I'm most impressed with out of this model so it is using a laser projector it's not LED  so we get no color fringing no Speckles and the brightness 1200 ISO lumens it's very good and  even with a bit of sunlight or some powerful lighting you can still make out and see what  you are doing with this projector now it does have Auto Keystone correction autofocus eye  protection mode and even built-in speakers there are two speakers that are 5 wats each Dolby audio  and this model does run Google TV which is the latest so you've got access to Netflix Amazon  Prime video YouTube all of those typical Google applications Google assistant is built in and you  can even cast to this projector as well and say project your mobile phone contents your gallery  your photos through the projector onto a screen this is what is included in the box with our dang  be atom we get our power supply cable the power supply which is a0 Ws from huntkey that's a known  brand for power supplies I do see quite a few of them and our remote here so Google TV which was  previously called Android TV dedicated buttons to launch straightaway Amazon Prime video Netflix or  YouTube and yes everything is in full HD it does have a wide Divine level one CT which is good news  of course you need that with a full HD projector like this volume up and down home menu back key  directional keypad and then okay's in the middle and a dedicated button there for Google Assistant  it's got a build-in microphone so you can just issue it those voice commands if you want for  example ask it uh the weather tell it to launch Amazon Prime video whatnot you get the idea and  this is our power button with status LED now it does take two AAA batteries and dang be includes  with the atom a user manual there it is an Al DP laser this model and that is 1080p so full HD Max  60 HZ 1,200 ISO lumens maximum brightness and it does support hdr10 there is a camera here some  other sensors because it does have Auto Keystone correction it also has intelligent image obstacle  avoidance so what it will do will it will resize that image to make it fit if there is something  in the way there and you see along the back that it's got this rubber foot along the whole bottom  of it it looks like it maybe spins around or rotates but it does not there's just this vent  all around the outside here tripod mounting point or if you're going to mount this maybe on the  seiling then you do have that option for it this is screwed into place so it is plastic here and  the size of it very good of course for what kind of image quality that you see that it's able to  produce HDMI 3.5 mm out power in USB 2.0 this is to play your external files you connect up with  external storage if you wanted to do so hot air comes out the back here there is a fan in this so  it's actively cooled this is our power on button with LED and then either side it's just the vents  here that you'll see well in fact they are speaker GRS because we do have speakers built into this  Dolby audio as you seen later on in the video I'll give you a sample of just what they sound  like and this is how I've got it set up so I have the dang be Neo which is approximately almost 3 m  away away from this 120 in ALR screen projecting at an approximate 95 or so in so this is how I  will review it you do need quite a large room to be able to project up to 180 in well you're going  to have to have a very big room indeed to be able to project that kind of size image here we are in  the menu of Google TV so this is where you'll find all your favorite shows in everything is  here so movies shows and apps you got the menu at the top so they've tweaked and Chang this a little  bit from what we previously had with Android TV but it's essentially really the same kind  of thing now you will notice that here there is a little bit of banding happening on the right hand  side of the screen now that is just due to camera settings projectors are extremely hard to record  without showing any banding and I do find it a challenge and pretty much any other Tech channel  would as well try to record them so the menus work really fast and you can see that it's bringing  through live information here of your shows and whatnot that you can watch and this is pulling  through what I have with Disney plus Amazon Prime video and Netflix that I'm subscribed to and even  HBO is going to show up there at the top so you can see here this is Disney plus and in Covenant  that I could continue to watch or watch that again right there at the top you got all your  different favorite movies and things and things that may interest you so it's using a bit of an  algorithm here too as well which is typical of goo Google I mean they do that with YouTube don't they  shows are in here I can continue to watch X-Men 97 go along the top here to the different apps  that I already have installed and as I mentioned we have a wide Vine level one search so Netflix  that's an full quality so full HD and that is not upscaled from uh 480p or anything like that  which is standard definition YouTube Amazon Prime video all of those you can get so there's so many  different applications and of course we do have Google assistant on board I'm just test that out  what's the weather today today in da it'll be partly cloudy with a fored high of 20 and a low  of 11 right now it's 18° and partly cloudy so it can give me the weather you can tell it to a lot  of other things as well so just look that up on the internet all the different commands you can  issue Google Assistant there is a lot in there just like all these different applications so now  we'll take a look briefly at the settings we get that are specific to the projector not to Google  TV and here those are so you'll find them under projector when you go into settings now note again  there is the banding scrolling up and down the screen unfortunately me changing the shutter rate  trying to improve this I can't seem to get rid of that it's just there but you don't see it in  person so we have Focus there's autofocus you got your manual focus you can also do that with the  buttons that are on the side uh image correction so Auto Keystone correction you can see if you go  into this it's all right it's already done it but you want to go into manual you can correct  it you got the four points and you can pull those out either side now the auto Keystone correction  seems to have done a very good job and I don't really need to tweak or change that but you have  the option to do that if you wanted to now you can get it to fit to the screen to automatically align  with the screen and image adaption is when there's something in the way will automatically resize  that anyway so those are the advanced settings we get with the image correction you have Bluetooth  speaker mode so you can put this into a mode where you could peer up your phone and just listen to  those Dolby um Atmos Dolby audio speakers that are on board with us a particular model here you  got smart eye projection this is off by default I'll just quickly demonstrate that so turning it  on if I was to walk in front of it or something goes in front like a small child maybe a little  dog uh what it will do is detect that you can see and Smart Eye projection turns the screen off or  turns should I say the projection off just to save on their eyesight and then it comes back as soon  as someone is out of the way I've just disabled it at the moment because no one's going to be walking  in front of it projection mode pretty standard here so Auto Front ceiling rear rear ceiling so  if you're going to be ceiling mounting this then you've got all those options to flick it into the  other orientation just like that and then you got the one dust removal the increase the fan speed  to remove dust from the chassis okay this is new you haven't seen this option before and when you  put this on it's very loud because it's the fan at Max Speed but it will blow out any dust then  the picture modes you've got a control there all brightness standard Eco or custom I keep it  instead standard Eco is going to drop it right down so you won't get that 1200 ISO lumens you  have standard Vivid Movie game Custom 3D mode as well if you wanted to use that you've got that  option and the game mode too for it there's the sound settings as well from this menu at the top  so you can see picture sound and this is where you also select your input so if you wanted you  could select for example your PlayStation 5 Xbox or whatever you want to plug into that HDMI port  is where you do it and the external USB for playing some files off a pen drive then the  Android specific settings so Android TV Google TV settings here you will find you've got a retail  mode so if you're going to be selling this in a shop then you might want to turn that on you've  got mirror cast settings so you can of course cast stuff through this Pi your phone up cast  a uh show whatever videos off your phone onto it you have ambient mode so Google photos Art  Gallery can have that that looping instead of just a typical screen saver even the weather or  show the time whatnot uh the storage it's built in so it's 32 GB better available storage space you  can see there is 24 once you start installing more apps it'll slowly go down and size but it's plenty  for the applications and things you need because everything is streamed Google keyboard gboard you  have language date time firmware updates there as well so all straightforward stuff that you would  be used to if you've ever used Android before or Android TV Google TV it really is all the same and  now let's take a look at Netflix performance this is probably the most used streaming app I would  say for television and show second would be Amazon Prime video the performance of this we'll take a  look at how quick it loads in and everything did seem to load in reasonably quick just at the start  I noticed there was a little bit of lag as it just cached in all of the different thumbnails here  for every single movie TV series and whatnot but now going through that menu performance is good  it's not noticeably laggy or slow it seems to be pretty much standard it feels about the same Pace  as my alga TV Samsung TV is well this is certainly faster than my older Samsung TV so the performance  of that is good now I will quickly jump into just something here and I can only play a few seconds  of this for obvious reasons for copyright so I don't get a strike or anything and I'll just jump  into something and we'll see how quick it takes to stream so an episode of Naros here it'll only  be a few seconds just to see how long it's going to take so this is oh look at that and that was it  was basically instantaneous there it just went straight in it must do some a bit of preaching  there anticipated me clicking on that and it's already just cached that in so that was excellent  It's very quick and I've noticed that that it just seems to play everything straight away moving to  a HDR clip here this is from Katie Jacob and ktie Schwarz they make some amazing looking videos here  and the quality this is Costa Rica looking very good and I can tell straight away yeah this is in  1080P everything looks sharp colors look great now being a laser let's talk a little bit about that  that well there's none of that speckle with blacks I don't see any color fringing and that brightness  the contrast and the sharpness excellent too I mean really good in these scenes it almost  doesn't look like a 4K projector being laser comparing this to say 4K LED one and now being  just 1080p laser it really is good this quality and I'm projecting at almost 100 in at the moment  and it is really quite good this quality it is looking absolutely amazing there so I want to  go into some darker scenes here that they do have and we can test the speed there of that cing in  looking good so those blacks are looking great they're not Pitch Black like an OLED but they're  a little little kind of grayish they don't have any speckle that's the good thing overall image  quality checks out and that brightness remember this goes all the way up to 12200 ISO lumens which  is very good considering the size of it now turn a light on again this is a powerful Studio light  and this is going to make it a little bit washed out you'll see now okay but really not too bad  it's fearing very well this image quality thanks to that 1200 ISO lumens now over to some gaming  here I'm using a PC now this is running Windows 11 and windows 11 tells me that HDR support is not  supported with the dang B atom unfortunately via HDMI it isn't and via USB it is not either because  I tried to pen drive with an HDMI file and it did not work so it's just streaming so Amazon Prime  video Netflix if it's an HDR that will work or YouTube and HDR but not pen drive sorry not HDMI  or USB now the game I'm testing out here is Forza Horizon 5 and the Lany I'm noticing is good but I  wouldn't say it is amazing there is a little bit of input lag like when I turn to the left here  and to the right I'm noticing just a fraction of a second it's not exactly how it would be if I'm  using my OLED TV or even some other projectors that have dedicated gaming modes which the atom  does have but I can still keep in the lane here I can still dve reasonably well it is playable for  this kind of casual gaming here not a problem but if you're into your competitive games well  you wouldn't be using a projector anyway for that so if you did want a game on the side with your  Xbox with your PlayStation or in my case here a Lenovo Legion go just pling it in and using  it like a console well you can do it and gaming at almost 100 in right now super immersive looks  really good but you just need to bear in mind that there is a tiny bit of input l that you do  have to accustom yourself to and adjust to which I've done and really it is fine so we've got two  speakers on board they're 5 wats each Dolby audio speakers and they're not bad considering the size  of it now they're not located on either side unfortunately so you don't really get any stereo  separation they are both on if you're looking at the rear the left side here both of the 5  wat speakers output is good there's a little bit of bass as you hear from this sample mids there  good considering just how small it is so here's that sample and this is at 70%volume and some very good news when it comes to the fan noise  that it is quiet this is not one of those projectors that when you sit next to it it  sounds and feels like you're sitting next to a jet engine you feel the hot air coming out  the back that's good that means the cooling is working it's doing its job but the fan RPM  and then the fan profile is great because it doesn't really ramp up and get super loud or  anything it seems to always remain the constant low RPM and the sound of it is not bad it is not  an unpleasant sound and if you're using the speakers that are built into it or your own  speaker system where you probably not even going to really hear it here's a sample of  those fans now worst case kind of scenario this is after using it now for a couple ofhours so this is the auto Keystone in action you can see as I move it now that the screen's angled  kind of funny right and you don't want it like that so tapping the side button I can bring up  this menu here that's just the autof focus working so that already comes on by itself as soon as it  detects you moved it so select now Auto Keystone correction and watch this how long it takes it's  just about what a second or two and it's now completely fixed that image and the good part is  it is pretty much perfectly straight and I have a hard time trying to manually do that Keystone  correction myself and get it that good so it's very good working with the sensors the camera  on board and the fact it's got the accelerometer detects those movements and refocus it itself so  if I move it about again pull it back here you'll see that it's going to decide to refocus it takes  a few seconds you see there we go and it doesn't need a splash screen in order to get that Focus  which just like the auto Keystone correction is working really well that is spot on that focus  is really good it's in Focus so all up for a very small thin light projector it does pack a lot the  built-in speakers they sound fine they aren't the best I've heard they're certainly not the loudest  and of course they're on just one side so stereo separation is really non-existent there that's a  very minor complaint from me now the UI is very fast it's fluid we get Netflix Amazon  Prime video all of those streaming services are in full HD which is good because it has a wide  Vine level one CT gaming on it is fine if it's just your typical kind of casual gaming there is  a a fraction of a second of delay of noticed with the input latency you see a little bit  of input lag there it's very minute and once you adjust to it as said as I said there the  Casual gaming is still fine with it I managed to play Forza Horizon 5 no problems with it it  was definitely playable there and the Android of course Google TV I'm still calling it Android TV  Google TV now it offers a lot of options when it comes to all the different apps you can install  you get a huge amount there there something like over 3,000 applications in fact probably a lot  more than that You' got Google Assistant built into it the HDMI port's great to plug things  in but there is no HDR support it seems with anything but streaming video it seems to just  be the streaming video we get the HDR with this so that is my minor complaint with it I wish it would  be HDR uh with HDMI and also with USB pin Drive HDR files and I hope that a firmware update may  be able to correct that there from dangi so that is the atom thank you so much for watching this  review on this great little portable very small compact yet bright 1200 ISO Luman laser projector\n"
