The Exeter Trial - Part Two - Fifth Gear

The Transcription of the Video: A Glimpse into the World of Motor Racing

As we stood at the starting line, Rebecca and I still faced around 12 hours of grueling competition. The first special section had already been completed, but now it was time to tackle the next one. We were determined to record gold medal dreams, and our trusty car, a Ford Escort, was ready to take on the challenge.

The five hills that stood before us were affectionately known as Stoppers. Back in 2008, they had put pay to fifth gear, and we knew how treacherous they could be. The first one, Norman's Hump, loomed ahead of us. What kind of driving techniques would we use to tackle this behemoth? "It's just plot and bash," I said with a grin as we queued at the bottom. But as we watched in dismay as car after car failed to get to the top, it became clear that Norman's Hump was more like the North Face of the Eiger with added slime.

Rebecca hopped into the back seat, and I floored it, one major obstacle down. But there was no time to relax because the next Stopper, Clinton, followed immediately after, threatening to stop us in our tracks once again. Still, we managed to maintain a clean sheet, but it seemed that Rebecca wasn't entirely happy. Her feet were tapping impatiently behind her, and I could sense her frustration as we bounced along the winding roads.

As we ploughed on through the Devon countryside, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and nervousness. We were ticking off the sections one by one, each one more challenging than the last. By now, it was 7:30 in the morning, and we were beginning to get a bit cocky for the last test. "We're getting my guess is dawn sort of dawn," I said with a chuckle as Rebecca took her place at the front seat.

The last test loomed ahead of us, and I let out a sigh of relief as I pulled up alongside the final section. It was muddy, ratty, and tricky, but we knew how to handle it. "We go yeah, we're getting my guessing dawn sort of dawn happy now," I said with a grin as Rebecca took the wheel.

With one final burst of speed, our 170 horsepower Escort sailed up the hill, jumping and filming me in the process. It was a moment of pure exhilaration, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride as we reached the top. We had made it to the final rest stop in our 17-event marathon, and now all that was left was the finish line.

Finally, we could pump up the tires and head off for breakfast, exhausted but triumphant. We had faced down the Stoppers and emerged victorious, and as I looked over at Rebecca, I knew that this was just the beginning of an incredible journey.
