### Gaming Keyboards: A Deep Dive with Kyle Rollins
Welcome back, guys! This is Dan Carpenter, and today I'm thrilled to have Kyle Rollins joining me for a discussion about gaming keyboards. Kyle, thanks for being here!
Kyle: No problem at all, glad to be here!
Dan: Now, you just finished reviewing these gaming keyboards for our site, Top 10 Reviews. I’m curious—when it comes to gaming, are there certain games that are better played on a keyboard than others? Or are there any games that you wouldn’t want to use a keyboard for?
Kyle: Great question! Let me break this down. Gaming keyboards, first and foremost, are essentially regular keyboards—they work with just about any game out there. However, some gaming keyboards have features that make them more suitable for specific genres of games. For instance, many gaming keyboards come with macro keys, which are fantastic for MMOs—massively multiplayer online games. These allow you to assign multiple commands to a single button press. That’s super handy because it lets you automate a lot of your actions without having to use the mouse or type out each command individually.
Dan: Oh, that’s cool! You can script these macros, right?
Kyle: Exactly! And some gaming keyboards are better suited for first-person shooters (FPS) and similar action-oriented games. They often have additional keys or customizable buttons that allow for quick actions during gameplay.
Dan: So, in essence, there’s no game that wouldn’t benefit from using a gaming keyboard—or at least not as much as you’d lose by not having one?
Kyle: Precisely! Even if you’re playing a casual game, a high-quality gaming keyboard will still function just like a regular keyboard. The difference is, it’s built to last longer and offers better tactile feedback, which makes typing or gaming more enjoyable overall.
Dan: Speaking of testing these keyboards—how many models did you evaluate for your review? And how did you go about testing them?
Kyle: Originally, we looked at around 16 different models. We managed to get our hands on close to a dozen that we could test out. Some of us even took a few home to play with because we don’t have a dedicated PC gaming setup here in the office. It was a lot of fun—we had to bring friends over just to try them all out!
Dan: That sounds like a blast! I bet you learned a lot by testing them in different environments.
Kyle: Absolutely! We had several team members test these keyboards throughout their workday to see how they performed as regular keyboards. It was important to evaluate not just the gaming aspects but also their everyday usability. Additionally, some of us—who do have gaming PCs—volunteered to take the keyboards home and put them through their paces with actual games.
Dan: That’s a solid testing process! So, if someone is looking to get into gaming keyboards, what should they be on the lookout for? What are the biggest factors they should consider?
Kyle: My number one recommendation is to look for keyboards with mechanical key switches. Most cheap keyboards use membrane switches, which feel mushy and aren’t as responsive. Plus, membrane keyboards don’t last as long—some of them are only rated for a few million keystrokes. On the other hand, mechanical switches are much more durable—they’re often rated for 50 million keystrokes or more!
Dan: Who in their right mind would ever need a keyboard to last that long?
Kyle: (laughs) I don’t know who would, but it’s good to know they can handle heavy use. Plus, mechanical switches feel much better when typing—they’re more tactile and provide a satisfying “click” with each keystroke.
Dan: That makes sense! So, while mechanical keyboards are generally more expensive than membrane ones, they’re worth the investment if you plan on using your keyboard regularly for gaming or other tasks.
Kyle: Exactly! You’re investing in something that’s going to last you a long time and improve your overall experience whether you’re gaming, typing up documents, or doing anything else on your computer.
Dan: Any trends or new directions in the world of gaming keyboards that we can expect to see in the coming months?
Kyle: Oh, there are some exciting developments! Many big manufacturers are planning to release mechanical keyboards with full RGB backlighting. You’ve probably seen these on newer models where every key is backlit and customizable.
Dan: That sounds awesome!
Kyle: It’s purely aesthetic, but it looks great and can actually help with ergonomics by making it easier to identify specific keys during gameplay. For example, you could set your WASD keys to light up in a different color so you know exactly where your fingers should be placed without having to look down at the keyboard.
Dan: That’s a fantastic feature! It adds both functionality and style to the keyboard.
Kyle: Absolutely!
Dan: Well, Kyle, thanks so much for joining me today and sharing all this great information about gaming keyboards. We really appreciate it!
Kyle: My pleasure, Dan! Always a good time to talk about gaming gear.
