The New Magic Mouse 2: A Comprehensive Review
We were excited to get our hands on the new Magic Mouse 2, which comes with a neatly packaged lightning cable that allows for easy recharging. The packaging itself is quite sleek and compact, making it easy to store or carry around.
Setting Up the Magic Mouse 2
One of the first things we noticed when setting up the Magic Mouse 2 was that it had two options for pairing: standard Bluetooth pairing and automatic pairing via a lightning cable connection. We decided to try out both methods to see how they compared. The standard Bluetooth pairing method required us to switch on the mouse and manually search for it on our Mac, whereas the automatic pairing option required us to connect the lightning cable to our Mac as soon as we plugged it in. This was a nice touch, as it eliminated the need to constantly check if the mouse was connected or not.
In terms of design, the Magic Mouse 2 is slightly longer than its predecessor, but this change is almost imperceptible and doesn't affect its overall feel or performance. The new model is also lighter, weighing in at 3.5 ounces compared to the previous version's 3.9 ounces. This added lightness makes it easier to move around on a surface, allowing for quicker and more precise control.
The redesigned pads along the back of the mouse reduce friction, making it even easier to use than before. The aluminum frame that holds everything together is still present, but now it's sealed in, which should help keep dust and debris out. Unfortunately, this means that we can no longer access the battery compartment or pop off the batteries like we did with the previous generation.
The on/off switch has also been moved to the same location as before, right next to the optical sensors. However, instead of a battery door, we now have a lightning connector that allows us to easily recharge the mouse when it runs out of power.
Using the Magic Mouse 2
In terms of performance, the Magic Mouse 2 works exactly like its predecessor, with all the same features and functionality. The multi-touch surface on top responds to swipes and taps of your finger, just like before, but now we also have a full physical click that can be used for scrolling, clicking, and other actions. We can choose between natural scrolling or traditional scrolling, and enable secondary clicks by pressing on the right side of the mouse.
One of our favorite features is set smart zoom, which allows us to double-tap on the surface of the Magic Mouse 2 to quickly zoom in on an image or web page. We also have the option to adjust the tracking speed, swipe between pages, and use Mission Control by double-tapping with two fingers on the surface of the mouse.
While the Magic Mouse 2 does offer some trackpad-like functionality, it's still a physical mouse that can be moved around for more accurate control over your cursor. However, this added precision may not be necessary for everyone, as some users may find it difficult to use the mouse for extended periods of time due to its small size.
In conclusion, the Magic Mouse 2 is a solid update to an already excellent mouse, with improved design and functionality that should appeal to both new and existing fans. While it's still a bit on the smaller side, the added lightness and reduced friction make it easier to use and more comfortable to hold for extended periods of time. However, if you're not a fan of the previous generation or prefer a different type of mouse altogether, this may not be the best option for you.
