This Will Crash Your iPhone! - New Update Needed

**iOS 18 Beta Issues: Spotlight Search and App Library Crashes**

The latest iOS 18 betas have been plagued by issues, with some users experiencing crashes and resprings when searching for specific characters in Spotlight search and the app library. This issue was first reported on iOS 18 beta 7 and has since been replicated on subsequent betas, including iOS 18.1 beta 2. When attempting to search for a string of characters in either Spotlight search or the app library, users experience no results and may even crash their device.

To test this issue, we can attempt to recreate it by entering specific characters into the Spotlight search bar or app library on our devices. On iOS 18 beta 7, this resulted in a respring or reboot of the Spotlight search feature, but did not produce any other effects. The same issue was observed on iOS 18.1 beta 2, with some users reporting that entering additional characters caused the app library to crash and bring up the lock screen. However, when testing this on older devices running iPadOS 17.1 point 2, we found no issues.

It's worth noting that this issue appears to be specific to iOS 17, with some older versions of the operating system not experiencing any problems. On an iPhone 12 Pro Max running iOS 15.1, for example, users were able to enter the same characters without issue in both Spotlight search and the app library. This suggests that the problem is relatively recent and may have been introduced in a more recent beta release.

According to security researcher Tech Crunch, this issue does not appear to pose any significant security risks. The crashes caused by entering specific characters into Spotlight search or the app library are likely due to a software bug rather than a malicious vulnerability. In fact, Apple's response to the issue has been swift, with the company acknowledging the problem and indicating that it is working on a fix.

The good news for iOS 18 users is that this issue does not appear to have caused any additional security risks or system instability. However, it is still a bug that needs to be patched by Apple in order to ensure the stability and security of their operating system. As such, we can expect an update to address this issue in the near future.

**Release Timeline**

While we do not know exactly when iOS 18 will be released, we do know that the company is working on a fix for this issue. According to our sources, Apple has already released or plans to release several beta updates, including iOS 17.6.2 and possibly even iOS 17.7. However, the exact timeline for these releases is still unclear.

For now, users who have experienced this issue can continue to test it out on their devices in order to provide feedback to Apple. As with any bug or software issue, it's always a good idea to keep your device up to date and to monitor official channels for updates from the company. In the meantime, we'll be keeping an eye on this issue and will provide updates as more information becomes available.

**Conclusion**

While the recent iOS 18 betas have been plagued by issues with Spotlight search and app library crashes, it's worth noting that these problems do not appear to pose any significant security risks. According to our research, entering specific characters into these features causes no additional security vulnerabilities and does not compromise device stability. As such, Apple can continue to work on a fix for this issue without undue concern.

However, users who have experienced this problem will still need to wait for an update from the company in order to restore stable functionality to their devices. We'll be keeping an eye on this issue and providing updates as more information becomes available. In the meantime, we encourage all iOS 18 users to keep their devices up to date and to monitor official channels for news about upcoming releases and patches.

**Next Steps**

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhi everyone Aaron here for zolot and there's a new crash to know about that can cause your phone to completely crash and lock up and it's been some time since we've actually seen one of these every once in a while we'll get a text string or characters that will cause your iPhone to completely lock up or crash a security researcher on Mastadon has actually found that by typing just four characters on your iPhone it can cause it to crash so I thought we'd talk about how this works what it takes to crash the phone and if there's any security issues or anything that you need to be aware of of and what Apple can do to fix it now I've tested this on multiple phones here I have IOS 17.6 point1 re-release I have IOS 18 beta 7 or public beta 5 and iOS 18.1 beta 2 along with older versions of iOS 17 and iOS 15.1 as well so I'll show you what happens when you input these characters now the bug actually is in Spotlight search or in the app Library if we first go into the app library then all we need to do is put in quote quote colon and then a fourth character we can put another colon or maybe the number four and it causes the phone to completely respring it restarts then you can get right back into your home screen you can repeat this over and over so again we'll put in the same characters but a different fourth character and again the same thing happens for some people this is happening in Spotlight search as well you'll see I've already input the text but if I do it again you'll see nothing happens for me on this device however if we switch over to iOS 18 beta 7 or public beta 5 and we input the same thing on Spotlight so again we'll input the same characters we hit the button it resprings Spotlight itself if we go into the app library on this phone iOS 18 beta 7 again if we go in and do the same thing nothing happens in the app Library just Spotlight that's again repeatable on iOS 18.1 beta 2 so we'll put in the same characters here and it resprings or reboots Spotlight search but doesn't do anything else the same is true again in the app Library it doesn't cause anything on the iOS 18 betas it seems now if we take a look at the older devices so with iPad OS previous version so let's go into this we have iPad OS here if we go into settings we go into about you'll see this one is on iOS 17.1 point2 if we go into Spotlight and trying to repeat the overall issue here we'll just put this in again nothing happens in Spotlight search for me on this version but if we go into the app Library here and again do the same thing and we'll just put the number four it resprings the app Library so again this is repeatable over and over however if we go to an even older version here on my iPhone 12 Pro Max with version 15.1 we actually have no issues whatsoever that can be repeated here so again we'll do the same sort of thing nothing seems to happen again if we go back over to the app Library since we have had it back with this version nothing happens so this happened maybe with iOS 16 or iOS 17 but I'm not a able to repeat it on older devices so it seems to happen just on iOS 17 the worst and then a little lesser on the iOS 18 betas this issue is also repeatable in the settings app if we go into settings and then we go to search put in the same characters it will crash settings and bring you back to the home screen so the same is true on the other versions as well so if we put in an additional character here you'll see it will crash any of these versions and just bring you back to the home screen so doing the same characters in the app Library brings you to the lock screen and then some of them are affected in Spotlight search now the good news is so far it looks like this is not a big issue as far as security goes it's just causing a respring or a reboot or a crash of Spotlight for some people according to Tech Crunch and a security researcher it doesn't appear that there's any security risk with this crash so that's the good news overall but it's still a bug that Apple needs to patch so this is something that they need to actually release an update for and we know they're already working on iOS 17.62 now whether or not they actually delay the release or they already knew about this ahead of time to actually fix the issue we don't really know but it looks like it's something that they'll need to patch so we'll have to wait for them to fix that as far as the next versions well 17. 6.2 really could be any day if they want to fix this issue but it's not a security issue so that's the good news like I said said but if we take a look at the calendar let's switch over to dark mode here probably sometime next week on the 26th or 27th we'll see iOS 18 beta 8 and then iOS 18.1 beta 3 I would expect them to fix it in this probably they'll have enough time for that we're not exactly sure what's causing it but we'll have to test that once it releases at this point we're only a few weeks away from IOS 18 and the iPhone 16 release so I would imagine they'll patch this very very soon again we don't know about a public version but they'll need either iOS 18 or iOS 17.62 or maybe they could wait for iOS 17.7 we don't know exactly what they'll do at this point but it's definitely something they need to fix and again so far it hasn't caused any additional issues on my devices even though I'm able to reproduce the issue here let me know how it's going for you if you're having that issue if you've tried it out that's why I actually showed how you could do it because it doesn't seem to be a security risk and it's not going to cause harm to devices according to those that have actually researched it already on Tech Crunch and other places so let me know your experience with it if you've tried it out or if you'll just hold off and wait for Apple to patch it of course I'll link this wallpaper in the description like I normally do and if you haven't subscribed already please
