The LOWEST RATED Books I Read (According to Goodreads) đŽ
### Article: The Worst Books I Read in 2023 According to Goodreads â Haleyâs Bookmas Day Nine Video Recap
Welcome back, everyone! Itâs Haley, and today is another exciting episode of **Bookmas Day**, where weâre diving into my favorite (and sometimes least favorite) books from the past year. Yesterday, I shared with you the **best books** I read this year according to Goodreads, but today, Iâm excited to talk about the opposite: the **worst books** I read in 2023. If you missed yesterdayâs video, where I discussed the best ones, make sure to check that out too! But for now, letâs get into it.
---
#### A Quick Reminder About My Method
Just like yesterday, I went to my Goodreads account and pulled up all the books I read this year. Then, I ordered them based on their **average ratings**, from highest to lowest. This gave me a clear list of the best and worst books I read in 2023. While the top 10 was interesting, I have to admit that todayâs list is even more intriguing because it reveals some surprising (and sometimes shocking) insights about what people didnât enjoyâwhether or not I agreed with those opinions.
---
#### Important Note: Low Ratings Donât Mean Bad Books
Before diving into the list, I want to emphasize something important. Just because a book has a low average rating on Goodreads doesnât mean itâs a bad book. In fact, some of these books might be ones you actually enjoy! The goal here isnât to bash books or authors but rather to share my own experiences and insights based on what I read this year.
So, if you see a book on this list that you love, donât feel bad about itâthis is just one personâs (my) perspective. Plus, as I mentioned yesterday, these ratings are constantly changing based on new reviews, so the numbers you see here are **specific to the time of filming**.

#### Letâs Get Started!
Alright, without further ado, letâs dive into my list of the worst books I read this year according to Goodreads. Some of these might surprise you, and others might resonate with your own experiences.
---
### 1. **Alice by Heart** by Steven Seder
- **Average Rating:** 3.06/5 Stars
- **Number of Ratings:** 416
This was the first book on my list, and honestly, it wasnât a surprise to me that it made the cut. I remember being very skeptical about reading this one because its ratings were so low, but I decided to give it a shot anywayâespecially since Iâm always up for a good **World War II** story or a creative take on a classic like *Alice in Wonderland*.
What ended up happening? Well, the book itself was quite dense and slow-paced, which made it hard for me to enjoy when reading physically. However, I did give it another chance by listening to the audiobook version, and that changed everything! Despite its flaws, thereâs something unique about this story, but it definitely isnât for everyone.

### 2. **Acts of Service** by Lillian Fishman
- **Average Rating:** 3.17/5 Stars
- **Number of Ratings:** ~4,000
Next up is *Acts of Service*, which I had high hopes for because of its cover and the hype surrounding it. Unfortunately, it didnât quite live up to my expectations. The book deals with themes of sex and sexuality in a way that felt problematic, particularly in its portrayal of relationships.
One thing that really stood out to me was how toxic the dynamic between characters was. While I understand the concept of polyamory, the execution here left a lot to be desired. A **two-star review** summed it up perfectly: âItâs a frustrating reading experience⌠the questions it raises are the ones I wanted to see more of in literature, but while there were glimmers of insight and memorable lines, those didnât feel worth reading about two women idolizing this insufferable guy.â

### 3. **Blame It On The Mistletoe** by Beth Gearhart
- **Average Rating:** 3.41/5 Stars
- **Number of Ratings:** ~1,700
This was one I read for last yearâs **Bookmas**, and I wasnât a fan of it thenâor now. The book is essentially a YA holiday romance story that felt more like a caricature of influencers than anything else. It reminded me of *The Holiday* but with all the charm sucked out of it.
One user review said it best: âI donât know why I thought this was going to be a Hallmark movie instead⌠I got a novel with a lot of caps lock Twitter posts and a social media war.â While I didnât hate it as much as some others did, I couldnât help but feel underwhelmed by its lack of depth.
---
### 4. **For All Time** by Shanna Miles
- **Average Rating:** 3.47/5 Stars
- **Number of Ratings:** ~588
This one was a bit of a heartbreaker for me because the concept sounded so promisingâa love story spanning lifetimes with time travel and all thatâbut the execution? Not so much. I ended up dnf-ing this one after just 65 pages, but even then, I could tell it wasnât going to get better.
One **two-star review** pointed out what I felt too: âThe time jumping was confusing⌠I didnât feel connected to the characters or their romance.â If anything, I felt like the story lacked direction and originality, which is a shame because the idea behind it was so unique.
---
### 5. **You Can Go Your Own Way** by Eric Smith
- **Average Rating:** 3.47/5 Stars
- **Number of Ratings:** ~1,000
This one was⌠fine. Not bad, not great. Itâs the kind of book that left me feeling lukewarm, especially since I had really enjoyed another book by this author in the past. The pacing felt off, and while it wasnât terrible, it just didnât stick with me.
One **one-star review** said it best: âThe pacing is extremely weird⌠all my expectations crashed onto the floor while reading.â While I didnât feel that strongly about it, I can see why people might not enjoy this one. Itâs definitely hit-or-miss.
---
### 6. **Bought a Charm and a Curse** by Jamie Questel
- **Average Rating:** 3.48/5 Stars
- **Number of Ratings:** ~667
This was another one I dnf-ed, but even the pages I read made me feel like it wasnât worth continuing. The curse transfer at the beginning felt clunky, and the characters were underdeveloped. Itâs hard to say what went wrong here, but the **two-star review** said it all: âThe story was just weak overall.â
---
### 7. **Four Aunties in a Wedding** by Jessie Toner
- **Average Rating:** 3.49/5 Stars
- **Number of Ratings:** ~13,000
Oh, how I wish I could have liked this one! If youâre a fan of *Dial A For Auntie*, youâll understand why Iâm heartbroken. This sequel just didnât deliver the charm or humor that made its predecessor such a hit.
One **one-star review** said it perfectly: âI was so confused⌠[It] failed to deliver the same charm, feel-good antics, and laugh-out-loud humor.â I couldnât agree more. Itâs sad when a series doesnât live up to its own legacy.
---
### 8. **The Holiday Switch** by Tiff Marcelo
- **Average Rating:** 3.49/5 Stars
- **Number of Ratings:** ~4,600
Another Christmas romance that missed the mark for me. While I can handle a certain level of corniness with holiday reads, this one just didnât hit the right notes. It felt more like a Hallmark movie than a novel, but in a bad way.
---
### 9. **Royal Holiday** by Jasmine Lauren
- **Average Rating:** 3.48/5 Stars
- **Number of Ratings:** ~
This one was another dnf for me, and I can see why others felt the same way. The British characters came off as stereotypes, and the dialogue lacked personality. One review called it âthe weakest book in the series so far,â and honestly, thatâs how I felt too.
---
### 10+ More Honorable Mentions
If time permits, Iâll mention a few more books that barely missed the cut or are worth noting for discussion:
- **The Project** by Courtney Summers (3.52/5 Stars)
- I wasnât a fan of this one either, and many people felt it was underwhelming.
- **We Canât Keep Meeting Like This** by Rachel Lynn Solomon (3.58/5 Stars)
- A book with **one-star reviews** that called the story âpainfulâ but I personally found it fine.
- **The Summer Job** by Lizzie Den (3.59/5 Stars)
- Another hit-or-miss; the main character was frustrating, but I enjoyed it despite its flaws.
- **The Worst Best Man** by Mia Sosa (3.59/5 Stars)
- A lighthearted enemies-to-lovers romance that didnât quite land for me due to wooden dialogue and an underdeveloped plot.
