LG SM9000 Unboxing And Basic Setup _ A 4K LED TV at the Right Price

**First Impressions: LG's WebOS TV**

As I started setting up my new LG webOS TV, I was immediately impressed by how easy it is to get started. The setup process is seamless, with minimal prompts and instructions required. You'll see a series of on-screen guides that walk you through the basics, such as connecting to the internet and selecting your language and timezone.

Once past the setup phase, you start getting a feel for what LG's webOS is all about. Expect to see ads in this far-left tile – it's just the new normal folks. Once you move over there, you can access all of your streaming services and see a preview of the different content that you can watch or have recently watched. It's highly interactive, making finding what you want to watch extremely easy.

**The Basics of WebOS**

WebOS is very easy to use – you don't really need to get a separate streaming device unless you happen to have a console that you prefer to do your streaming through. But, I know that the onboard apps will give me the best HDR and resolution. Once your setup is done, definitely want to get into the picture settings.

I started with the standard picture mode, which includes motion smoothing – something I hate. I usually move straight to Cinema, as it's usually the most accurate setting right out of the box. However, you can also go to Technicolor Expert, which is going to be very similar to cinema – it's been signed off by Technicolor, and its color mode is all dialed in there. So, I stuck with Technicolor Expert for now.

**Picture Settings: A Closer Look**

I dug deeper into some of the other picture settings, and here's our full picture mode setting and adjustments section. I'm going to bounce down to export controls and check those out quickly. All the stuff I want to see off is off – dynamic contrast, super resolution, and all that adjust the color gamut depending on whether we're in HDR mode or not.

Bouncing down to picture options, everything that we want off is off, including motion smoothing – which gives you that soap-opera effect. Now, I'm going to pop into another app – this is going to be YouTube. Made the picture settings in Netflix, but will they stick when I go into another app? That's always a question with these Smart TVs.

**App Stability and HDMI Inputs**

Alright, now that we're in your YouTube pop this open, and yeah, it's stuck. Okay, so once you make a picture setting in one app, it should stick across at least those apps – and then you want to double-check that your HDMI inputs are also set to the same thing. Of course, we're in Dolby vision now, so we're going to see Dolby vision modes.

**Aesthetics and Build Quality**

First impressions on the aesthetic of the TV are great – it looks really sharp in the room. Setting it up could not be any easier, with webOS making that extremely simple. It looks like webOS in general has been improved so that all of your picture settings are carried across all inputs and apps – that's a serious time saver.

You do have to spend a little time updating the TV, but that also goes very fast. So, the user experience so far has been excellent. The question becomes: where's the picture quality at? And what's the overall user experience like whether you're watching in a dark room or a bright room – how's the color accuracy? How does it compare to some of the other TVs that we've reviewed?

**The Verdict**

All that is coming up soon in our full review video. We'll also put this TV up against a couple of the others that we've still got in-house. Thanks for watching everybody – you know how this goes – hit me up in the comments down below, let me know what you need to know about this TV so I can include it in the review light subscribe, hit that notification bell, and of course, visit Digital Trends calm for the latest tech news and reviews.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enLG tends to put a lot of its eggs in its OLED TV basket but not all of them I mean oh let's get all of the headlines because OLED but they do make a full line of LED LCD TVs that just don't get talked about as much as their OLED TVs they're kind of standing in the alleged shadow if you will so today we're gonna take a look at one of them welcome back everyone i'm caleb dis and welcome back everybody I'm Caleb Denison for Digital Trends and today we are unboxing the lgsm 9000 LED LCD TV now it's got kind of mid grade pricing you can get a 55 inch here for a thousand bucks and the 65 inch costs about fourteen hundred bucks sometimes they go on sale but while that's mid-tier pricing this is anything but a mid tier TV in fact it sits just below the top of the line so we're expecting some really good quality out of it but before we can check any of that out we've got to unbox it and get it set up on the stand have a closer look here's everything that comes in the box including this product literature will ditch that for now the three stand pieces you see here are at the top and easy to find the rest is buried at the bottom that would include two sets of screws for the mount LG's magic motion remote our buddies the Bessel batteries for said remote and then you know still rocking the composite breakout cable and then this thing okay so we want to put together this stand and we got kind of an awkward situation here with the elliptical base and then this collar piece that goes on the TV there's two ways you could play this you could put this right into the television secure that and then secure this to the bottom of the collar but that's not the play I want to make and actually LG recommends that you connect the base to the collar first and then connect it to the TV so this just inserts up in here and then you know where we go from there now that those two pieces are connected we need to go in at just a slight angle here and let this sit down into the TV and then once that's in place asker it you know the drill tada we have arrived at the gratuitous back of the TV shot and it's super clean you know you get this sort of fake brushed aluminum look but it of course it is plastic but it's just a really clean look back here something I noticed while I was digging into the HDMI inputs it doesn't say EARC here but the website actually does indicate that the TV supports EARC no word on what other kinds of HDMI 2.1 support there might be probably none but that's kind of encouraging also there is some cable management that you can employ here we route the cables down through this sort of channel and then you can slide this decorative piece on there other than that the TV although it does have a bit of a bump out is not particularly thick it's got a pretty thin profile so looking good from the sides in the back let's check out from the front damn LG this is a slick looking TV I mean it's not like OLED swim but I mean the stand is plastic but it looks nice the bezels are almost indistinguishable from the screen itself and they're actually a little bit recessed and the look is really nice I do have a couple of complaints though one this thing is a wobble fest I was trying to wipe it down and look it's a freaking roller coaster I don't like that I like a more solid stand also I don't know if you can tell from where you're looking but it's leaning a little to the right it's a little cattywampus now look I've seen this before with a lot of different TVs and also this is a review sample it was obviously in somebody else's hands before we got it because you can see like sticker impressions and stuff on the back but if you purchase this TV might I recommend that you wall-mounted I'm just not a big fan of the stands situation going on right now now the screen looks all nice and dark black now but we're going to power this guy on and see what we see alright well looks like we might have some screen uniformity stuff but we'll wait until we put some test patterns on to judge that so if you're not familiar LG uses its own webOS Smart TV system which is super intuitive like you can definitely put a novice in front of this TV and they're gonna be able to figure out how to set it up and as you can see here it also runs Google so it's using Google assistant in combination with its own artificial intelligence to help make voice queries make more sense to the TV and be more helpful so the first thing you're gonna want to do is turn down the volume because the voice prompts are super annoying and you don't get to turn them off until a little bit later in the process as you can see it's very bubbly very animated you just need to go through and make the selections for your language and your timezone that kind of thing and it'll connect to the internet before you know you're ready to get going once you're past the setup you start getting a feel for what LG OS is all about first of all expect to see ads in this far left tile here that's just the new normal folks once you move over there you can see you get access to all of your streaming services and once you're logged in it'll actually give you a preview up above of the different content that you can watch or have recently watched so it's highly interactive it makes finding what you want to watch extremely easy will dig into how Google assistant and LG's own a I work for voice search in the full review but yeah I mean that's the basics of it webOS very easy to use you don't really need to get a separate streaming device unless you happen to have a console that you prefer to do your streaming through but I know that I'm getting the very best HDR and resolution using the onboard apps once your setup is done you okay so here's our full picture mode setting and adjustments section and we're gonna bounce down to export controls check those out really quick all the stuff I want to see off is off dynamic contrast super resolution we do want to leave the color gamut at auto that all adjust the color gamut depending on whether we're in HDR mode or not bounce down to picture options and here yeah everything that we want off is off let's double check our true motion is off right so yeah I mean if you want the most accurate picture quality right out of the box go with Technicolor expert that's going to defeat all of the settings that you don't want including motion smoothing which gives you that soap-opera effect now I'm gonna pop into another app this is going to be YouTube I made the picture settings in than not the standard cinema is also great for brighter rooms but cinema home is gonna work better for us here so yeah there were a couple things I don't like that wobbly stand is driving me crazy as is the fact that it's a little bit unlevel leaning towards the right I don't care for that but again a wall mount is going to solve that problem otherwise I'm pretty impressed first impressions on the aesthetic of the TV are great I think it looks really sharp in the room setting it up could not be any easier webOS makes that extremely simple and it looks like webOS in general has been improved so
