Peugeot 508 SW Estate 2021 in-depth review
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: endefine normal estate cars like your volkswagen passat and Vauxhall Insignia sport tourism it boring and predictable then check this out it's the Peugeot 508 SW it's a more interesting looking alternative but is it all style and no substance well in this video we're going to find out let's start by talking about this cause price so the 5sw starts from twenty eight and a half thousand pounds but you don't to pay that and through carlo you can save an average of over six pounds and pounds and one of these things the particular curve here is the hybrid a little and that would normally cost over thirty six grand but i put the details into car while got an offer back from one of our trusted dealers for just under thirty thousand pounds so if you're thinking about buying new cars click on the pop-up banner up there to get a call right see how much money you can save or just google car why it's your car buying a comparison website i really like to look at the front of this car it's dead aggressive it's got these fangs which are the daytime running lights though on low models such as the allure they are normally blacked out but you can pay extra to have them as the actual light which you want to do for the full effect on GT light cars and above they come as standard just be aware of that when you speaking up your car this car looks great from the side as well I remember when estate cars are all boxy and boring but not anymore as standard you get 17-inch alloy wheels I think they look a bit too small really lots of sidewall on the old tire GT line and above have 80s and of course you can upgrade these if you wanted to a teens you get satin surround for the windows and the roof bars on GT line cars and above their blacks at sporty-er you get tinted rear windows as standard but on GT liner they are darker tints for an even moody a sport your effect and there's GT light causing above what I've blacked out mirror caps one feature I do like it's the way that they've made the glass area look smaller at the end so the car looks sleek even though the roofline isn't quite so sloping so that shouldn't impair practicality too much in the back we'll find out in a moment and this design looks rather like the Hofmeister Kinki have on the BMW 3-series touring don't you think in fact you don't have to think look over there I've got one see it's the same which God do you think looks the best though I quite like the per show I think the Pozos a slightly better looking car but do you agree with me let me know in the comments below which you like the best the Pirjo or the BMW for me though the best angle of this car is the rear end it's just so nice looking it's definitely better looking from the rear than the boom whether you like it or not even cameraman jack is a Bentley fan boy thinks it's better-looking than his BMW jacket listen dad shush he does really just won't admit it I just loved the fact you got this big full-length light bar at the rear the weight says Persia very proud of itself and fake diffuser obviously I'll tell you what's not fake the exhaust pipes yeah they are real as illustrated with the Carlisle sticker truth well done Peugeot they're not faking it now let's talk about the engines but before we do check this out gas struts to hold at the bonnet it's a sign of a posh car now the engine range kicks off with a 1.6 liter turbo petrol can getting with either 181 horsepower or 225 horsepower both cars come with an 8-speed automatic gearbox in terms of economy you're looking at around 40 miles per gallon from those these does include a 1.5 liter diesel with 131 horsepower now that engine is available with a 6-speed manual but that's the only one that comes with the manual then there's two 2-liter diesels and they have either 163 horsepower 177 horsepower and they should do probably high 40s in terms of miles per gallon then there's this hybrid version which combines a 1.6 liter turbo petrol with a 101 horsepower electric motor to give you 225 maximum horsepower so this thing is supposed to be able to do over 166 miles per gallon if you've run it properly and plug it in regularly yet still deliver decent performance Peugeot says that this 500 ASW hybrid can do not sixty in eight point three seconds Bert I'm gonna trust them I'm gonna see what it does myself with my new specialist timing gear all right and I launched it there's no noise control I just X on the right so it doesn't easy does it away from the start nice and smooth bit of help from the electric motor a bit of a slow lazy gear change but fine and that's the 60 seemed okay oh wow not sixteen eight point one seconds felt slower but that's maybe because it's just so smooth the 508 SW Hybrid has a twelve kilowatt hour battery pack and that has an electric only range of thirty nine miles and you can drive on electric power alone up to speeds of 84 miles an hour so faster than you can legally go in the UK in terms of charging here it'll take five hours to fully charge using the standard household 3 pin socket if you use a public fast charger then it'll do it in four hours which seems quite slow however if you pay peugeot an extra 300 pounds they'll allow the car to charge quicker from one of those public rapid charges and it'll then do it in two hours when they just make that the standard the inside of this car is probably even more eye catching than the outside I love the two-tiered - the materials are soft and squidgy and feel expensive and I'm totally convinced by this carbon fiber effect rim it's alright the small steering wheel looks cool and the way you have your digital drivers display which is standard on all models by the way kind of works and doesn't work depending on how tall you are because the steering wheel can get in the way so it's hard to pull over it which some people would be a bit annoying now suddenly you get an 8 inch screen but higher it models get this 10 inch version which is much better but all versions do get these lovely metallic piano key style shortcut buttons for the infotainment system I think that's really really nice now I'll go into more in-depth detail on the infotainment system later in the video but it's not all perfect tenir for instance there are scratchy plastics a bit lower down but to be fair that is to be expected and this shiny black trim well it looks good it is quite easy to scratch so that could get a bit nasty after a while the seating position for me is good I like the fact you can extend the seat base like that so you've got extra under thigh support and of course you can Jack the seat up and down to get a decent view out there's also plenty of adjustment in the steering wheel which is handy so you can actually move it out of the way so you can see the dolls but pretty much tender they have to drive around with a steering wheel basically in your need overall I do like the inside of this car it's interesting especially compared to most other cars in this class one of the big problems with the 508 saloon is the fact that rear headroom is not good at all whereas here in the estate plenty people over 64 will be fine knee room is pretty good as well and just wish there was a bit more room under the front seat to really stretch out there is a bit of a hump in the floor but the footballs are beginning of everyone's feet and even though this middle seat is a bit firm and not the comfiest Headroom is okay in here and the body is just about wide enough to cope with three people in the back at once though it doesn't feel quite as roaming for carrying lots of passengers in the rear as a Volkswagen Passat a stain if you click on the pop-up banner up there you can see my in-depth video review of this car one of the big problems with this is that when you have three people in the back the weather this roofline slopes in and actually comes down quite low means the people in the addressee to end up like having their head pressed against it like that which is gonna be a bit annoying after a while the 508 SW boot that's quite a few useful features you've got on those low covers which can recede partly or the hallway like that there's lots of tie-down points about this loads there's even the sliding rails tie-down points as well which is very premium feeling then there's straps about the place you've got Hawks you've got your 12 volt socket that's all good there's not really a load lip as such but there's more like a little ski jump which is good for just hiking it's stuff out and it does almost like give it some leverage over the big expansive bumper so you don't scratch it maybe that's why they did it I don't know but it kind of works the load space is actually quite big and square and it's gonna be enough for most people it's like 530 litres and interestingly the hybrid has the same bit capacity that's because the batteries aren't really under the boot like they are in some of the hybrids they're under the rear seats however it's a bit small compared to other estates for instance if you want the car with the biggest load area in this class it's the Skoda Superb Estate if you click on the pop-up banner up there you can watch my detailed video of that car and that varies on to five annoying things about this Peugeot 508 SW for some reason there are absolutely no grab handles anywhere inside the car so if you're driving it's a bit Larry you're passing just have nothing to hold on the hybrid version doesn't have a spare where like the normal version of this car but you do have this is this little recess area there where you're supposedly supposed to keep your Terra Pegu and your charging cables yeah you try fit them in never quite closes properly Sonic the glove box is really really small the reason is is that the fuse box of the car is also in there what a lot of manufacturers will do is to move it across with the steering wheel so you can enjoy the full space of the glove box but not ho Joe for some reason why you can't open the cap to get at the charging socket when the car is open you can't open the fuel filler cap while you count on most cars so you have to go inside and press the button and pressurized fuel tank please wait it says I'm waiting what on brake and press Start Oh bear with me shut open without it yes finally and there it is how hard was that it's just necessary perch I managed to fit a few buttons on its multifunction steering wheel but it's not multifunction enough because they had to add on this afterthought for the cruise control which looks like it belongs from a POJO in the mid normal teeth it's not all negative though here's five good things about this car expensive coupe racing sports cars have what's known as frameless windows but so does this Peugeot state look there is no surround for the class mmm I can are satisfied this new 508 SW is about 70 kilos lighter than the old 508 SW which is like not having to carry around a Matt Watson in the boot with you the whole time for an extra 1,300 pounds you can get an optional night vision system which lets you see things in the dark clearer and they'll actually illuminate object such as cyclists and other cars 200 meters further up the road than the headlights actually projecting the front seats in this car have been approved by the actions for a healthy back initiative because supposedly they're so comfy and good you that you should end it with back if you have the adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist that could not only keep you in the middle of the lane you can actually choose to be on the right-hand side or the left-hand side of the lane so that if you're in traffic and you want to let motorcycles filter past you you can set the car up so that can be the primary SW is a front-wheel drive car you cannot get it at all with all-wheel drive it actually shares most of its mechanical parts with the three thousand eight and the five thousand eight various large Citron's and Eva and the voxel grande lambics you can get a driver's Sport pack which adds a sports mode to the car and all that does is shop of the throttle response adds weight to the steering it makes the changes from the automatic gearbox faster and it even plays fake engine sounds through the speakers to put you in a sporty mode it's actually standard on GT line and above GT line above also get adaptive suspension as standard for the best balance of comfort and handling now you can fit that as an optional extra on models low down in the range though not at all on the entry level active so then what's this Peugeot 508 SW like to drive around town it's fairly easy going the suspension is pretty good over bumps it does fit a bit over broken services but if you have the adaptive dampers then it's actually way better and more composed in that situation it's quite an easy car to drive through traffic because the steering's nice and light it's got quite decent turning circle it's slightly better than similar Cottagers and insignia sports tourer or a VW Passat so that does how when you're having to do three-point turns and things are what's not as good as those cars though and you've probably noticed that is a massive pillar create a big blind spot also the view at the back window is pretty poor as well it's not great it really will help you if you've got the reversing camera when you're trying to park this thing into tight spaces you're trying to gear box is quite smooth around town as well so that's a good thing and obviously with the hybrid version you have an electric only mode so you just put it into electric then you can just drive along using the electric motor so it's just dead silent testing to do though is to go into hybrid mode and that they can sort it all out give you the best balance of economy and performance as you go out onto a fast open road if you need to accelerate from 40 miles an hour you floor the throttle and the gearbox is pretty slow to respond with a hybrid you do have the benefit of that electric motor giving you some assistance so that delay isn't quite as bad as it is with just the normal cars then when you going at speed this isn't quite as quiet to travel in as a volkswagen passat estate because you get a bit more wind noise a bit more toys it's not intrusive really I've got on the seats though they're comfy now if you're driving long distance and you want to save your electric power for later on in your drive you have an E Save mode so you can select to turn that on then it will actually make sure you're not using any battery and I'll use the petrol motor to and to the generator to then help charge up the battery a lot of time with these plug-in hybrids you might be doing longer journeys so what we've done is run this one on a normal cycle with that electric save mode to find out what the economy is like if you have a normal petrol version or if you want to use your hybrid just for longer distances and I've averaged 38 miles per gallon not using the hybrid system properly if you're doing it as you should do so just plug in in every night and doing shorter journeys you might be able to get 166 miles per gallon the Peugeot claims is possible finally let's see what this guy's like on a twisty roads I'm actually going to put into sports mode so this car does have the adaptive dampers so it stiffen those up it's added a bit of weight to the steering it is actually alright look giving the front tires a workout stability controls kicking in but it holds on alright and there is a deer no you don't want to hit one of those well get out the way deer brakes are good really need them to be speaking of which I've got the car in brake modes when I lift off the accelerator you get a bit of added engine braking because the motor acts like a brake as well and then it recoups that lost energy and puts it back into the battery anyway that was eventful a bit more than a normal spirited driving this car would be because while its competent I wouldn't say it was fun it's just fine now let's talk about technology so the Senate 18 screen isn't great doesn't fill up enough space really this 10-inch one is better but even then the graphics are quite dark and the screen is a little bit on the laggy side you do get satellite navigation da B digital radio standard but the satellite navigation isn't the best system however you do get Android auto and apple carplay so you're just gonna hook up your phone and use Google Maps really it's just much better having these shortcut buttons is brilliant super quick to choose the menu you want one thing that is a bit annoying though is that if you want to alter the temperature then you do have to do it through the touchscreen rather than just turn her dial I think the digital drivers display is better it's really quite nice so the graphics are good it's quite colorful and you do have lots of different views that you can just swipe through on that screen and change the look of it and for the hybrid you get an energy diagram which shows how the energy is being flow from the engine to the batteries the card has come with voice commands but they're very rudimentary so you're not gonna bother with those at all really now let's talk about this cause practicality in a little bit more depth starting with how easy it is to fit a child seat so it's not the easiest compared to other estate cars because of this low roofline also the item X points here in the back under Annoying zip so it's quite hard to get to there is a saving grace though and that's the fact that this car gets ISOFIX not only on the two outer rear seats but also in the front passenger seat as well in car storage on the phone it's doubly is actually pretty good apart from that people of box already showed you so you have a deep storage area under here with all look an oxime surprise and how old-fashioned is also some more storage into here with a 12 volt socket if you need it you have two deep cup holders here and I do mean debug they can hold really tall flasks there's some more storage under here look at that and that's where your USB ports or for your mobile phones leave your mobile phone there then that is quite an awkward place to get to to be fair the door bins they're big enough in the back main quite a big book with the pushin and shovin you can get a large bottle in there what's not so good though is this the cupholders here in the central armrest and really shallow anything you're putting there it's gonna spill out someone accelerates a brake suddenly you do have some net on the seat box there where you can things if you want to like your mobile devices when you're not using them if you need to carry longer items then you have a ski hats where you can fit long pieces of wooden poles and stuff through and of course your skis when you fold down the rear seats which you can also do from here as well as the leavers in the back look you did get quite a decent area now these do stick up a little bit so it's not completely flat but this carpet covering does mean that you have a continuous ish floor so you can slide heavier items from the back all the way to the front not perfect but it's okay finally then let's talk about the different equipment levels so the 508 SW range kicks off with the active trim and I gets dual zone climate control automatic winterim wipers and headlamps and auto emergency braking with Lane Keeping Assist next up is the allure model and that has heated front seats around parking sensors with a reversing camera and USB ports here in the back strange they're not standard across the range but there you go then there's the GT line which gets full LED headlights blue instead of just the normal white interior ambient lighting and wireless charging for your mobile phone finally there's the GT which gets a hands-free operating tailgate this car doesn't have it so I'll do a demonstration of what it would work like boot opening automatically amazing the GT line also gets full leather interior electric front seats with a massage function and an upgraded stereo but which is the best engine and trim combination of the fibre SW well you know what I've built my favourite car on car where I've got an awesome deal on it and if you click on the pop-up banner up there the top right corner of the screen you can see the car that I think is the best of the 508 range and the deal I've gone it through car so then what's our final verdict on the Peugeot 508 SW should you avoid it should you consider actually shortlist it or should you just go right ahead and buy it well I reckon you should shortlist the 508 SW it's a good-looking reasonably practical posh feeling good value for money let's take our do you agree my verdict let me know in the comment section also please subscribe to this channel for more videos and if you click on the deals box to the right you can see how much you can save on a new car at car wife or click on the video windows below to watch another of my videosdefine normal now if you're driving long distance and you want to save your electric power for later on in your drive you have an E Save mode so you can select to turn that on then it will actually make sure you're not using any battery and I'll use the petrol motor to and to the generator to then help charge up the battery a lot of time with these plug-in hybrids you might be doing longer journeys so what we've done is run this one on a normal cycle with that electric save mode to find out what the economy is like if you have a normal petrol version or if you want to use your hybrid just for longer distances and I've averaged 38 miles per gallon not using the hybrid system properly if you're doing it as you should do so just plug in in every night and doing shorter journeys you might be able to get 166 miles per gallon the Peugeot claims is possible finally let's see what this guy's like on a twisty roads I'm actually going to put into sports mode so this car does have the adaptive dampers so it stiffen those up it's added a bit of weight to the steering it is actually alright look giving the front tires a workout stability controls kicking in but it holds on alright and there is a deer no you don't want to hit one of those well get out the way deer brakes are good really need them to be speaking of which I've got the car in brake modes when I lift off the accelerator you get a bit of added engine braking because the motor acts like a brake as well and then it recoups that lost energy and puts it back into the battery anyway that was eventful a bit more than a normal spirited driving this car would be because while its competent I wouldn't say it was fun it's just fine now let's talk about technology so the Senate 18 screen isn't great doesn't fill up enough space really this 10-inch one is better but even then the graphics are quite dark and the screen is a little bit on the laggy side you do get satellite navigation da B digital radio standard but the satellite navigation isn't the best system however you do get Android auto and apple carplay so you're just gonna hook up your phone and use Google Maps really it's just much better having these shortcut buttons is brilliant super quick to choose the menu you want one thing that is a bit annoying though is that if you want to alter the temperature then you do have to do it through the touchscreen rather than just turn her dial I think the digital drivers display is better it's really quite nice so the graphics are good it's quite colorful and you do have lots of different views that you can just swipe through on that screen and change the look of it and for the hybrid you get an energy diagram which shows how the energy is being flow from the engine to the batteries the card has come with voice commands but they're very rudimentary so you're not gonna bother with those at all really now let's talk about this cause practicality in a little bit more depth starting with how easy it is to fit a child seat so it's not the easiest compared to other estate cars because of this low roofline also the item X points here in the back under Annoying zip so it's quite hard to get to there is a saving grace though and that's the fact that this car gets ISOFIX not only on the two outer rear seats but also in the front passenger seat as well in car storage on the phone it's doubly is actually pretty good apart from that people of box already showed you so you have a deep storage area under here with all look an oxime surprise and how old-fashioned is also some more storage into here with a 12 volt socket if you need it you have two deep cup holders here and I do mean debug they can hold really tall flasks there's some more storage under here look at that and that's where your USB ports or for your mobile phones leave your mobile phone there then that is quite an awkward place to get to to be fair the door bins they're big enough in the back main quite a big book with the pushin and shovin you can get a large bottle in there what's not so good though is this the cupholders here in the central armrest and really shallow anything you're putting there it's gonna spill out someone accelerates a brake suddenly you do have some net on the seat box there where you can things if you want to like your mobile devices when you're not using them if you need to carry longer items then you have a ski hats where you can fit long pieces of wooden poles and stuff through and of course your skis when you fold down the rear seats which you can also do from here as well as the leavers in the back look you did get quite a decent area now these do stick up a little bit so it's not completely flat but this carpet covering does mean that you have a continuous ish floor so you can slide heavier items from the back all the way to the front not perfect but it's okay finally then let's talk about the different equipment levels so the 508 SW range kicks off with the active trim and I gets dual zone climate control automatic winterim wipers and headlamps and auto emergency braking with Lane Keeping Assist next up is the allure model and that has heated front seats around parking sensors with a reversing camera and USB ports here in the back strange they're not standard across the range but there you go then there's the GT line which gets full LED headlights blue instead of just the normal white interior ambient lighting and wireless charging for your mobile phone finally there's the GT which gets a hands-free operating tailgate this car doesn't have it so I'll do a demonstration of what it would work like boot opening automatically amazing the GT line also gets full leather interior electric front seats with a massage function and an upgraded stereo but which is the best engine and trim combination of the fibre SW well you know what I've built my favourite car on car where I've got an awesome deal on it and if you click on the pop-up banner up there the top right corner of the screen you can see the car that I think is the best of the 508 range and the deal I've gone it through car so then what's our final verdict on the Peugeot 508 SW should you avoid it should you consider actually shortlist it or should you just go right ahead and buy it well I reckon you should shortlist the 508 SW it's a good-looking reasonably practical posh
