Nikon Z 30 Review - The New Best Vlogging Camera!

The Nikon Z30 is a compact mirrorless camera with video capabilities that offers a unique set of features and options. One of the standout features of this camera is its battery life, which is reportedly fantastic according to Nikon's numbers were very conservative. This is made possible by the USB-C port, which can be used to charge the camera on the go. The camera comes with a massive battery pack that can provide extended power to the device, making it ideal for vloggers and content creators who need to shoot footage for extended periods without interruption.

The camera also features multiple output options, including a 245-wide maximum output, 100-watt outputs, and 65w outputs. These outputs make it possible to charge the battery pack quickly and efficiently, allowing users to keep shooting without having to worry about running out of power. The battery pack itself is large but can be easily slipped into a bag or backpack for convenience.

One aspect that may appeal to some users is the lack of an EVF (Electronic Viewfinder). While some people prefer the use of an EVF, others are accustomed to using the camera's display instead. The display on this camera is high-resolution and easy to view in most lighting conditions, making it a viable alternative to an EVF.

There are also options available for users who want to upgrade their experience with features like an EVF. For example, the Nikon Z50 is another mirrorless camera that offers a 3-inch screen with a pivoting mount, which provides excellent flexibility when shooting in certain situations. Additionally, the Nikon ZFC has a retro design and offers advanced manual controls, making it suitable for more experienced photographers who want to explore their creative potential.

Another option available is the Hyper Zonder Super Tank All USB-C Output Battery Pack. This massive battery pack can power a camera for extended periods without needing to be recharged, providing users with complete flexibility when shooting on location. The pack comes in various sizes and can be easily slipped into a bag or backpack for convenience. While larger packs may be too heavy, smaller versions are available that can still provide excellent performance.

For content creators who want to film high-quality video, the Z30 camera offers several features that make it an attractive option. It includes a small rig tripod that can hold a camera and remote microphone simultaneously, allowing users to set up a makeshift studio on location. The pack also comes with an additional microphone, which provides even higher audio quality. This combination of features makes the Z30 a great choice for creators who want to capture professional-grade footage without the need for extensive equipment.

In conclusion, the Nikon Z30 is a powerful and flexible mirrorless camera that offers several unique features and options. From its impressive battery life to its multiple output options and compact design, this camera has something to offer every type of user. Whether you're a content creator or an enthusiast photographer, the Z30 is definitely worth considering as a potential addition to your toolkit.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enthis is the all-new nikon z30 and it is a fantastic compact mirrorless camera for video creators and in this video i'm going to tell you why welcome everybody to apple insider it is andrew here and the nikon z30 launched just this year uh in the mid to late july a lot of places are still getting these in but it is the low end of nikon's new mirrorless lineup it is one of three aps-c crop sensor cameras that nikon has put out including the zfc and the z50 all three of nikon's aps-c sensor cameras have a 21 megapixel sensor and run on its xspeed6 processor there's a lot of cool stuff to like about this camera in the rest of nikon's crop sensor lineup let's start the review by going over some basic features and specs so this is an aps-c sensor it is a mirrorless camera so not a slr dslr or anything like that it's personally why it's so small these days and nikon has given up really on slr cameras and focused solely on the mirrorless market now this is actually part of the z series which includes a number of cameras now and more and more lenses as time is go on but basically a whole new lens mount system that they've transitioned to moving back to the camera uh it is using a 21 megapixel sensor technically just under 21 megapixels and it has a hybrid autofocus system with 209 auto focus points it does more tracking autofocus which is pretty crucial especially on the video side and there is eye tracking autofocus as well a few more quick specs for shooting photos this will shoot at up to 11 frames per second same with the z50 and the zfc for video this will do full 4k video at 30 frames per second you can also shoot in 24 frames per second for 4k if you're shooting at full 1080p fhd that will get up to 120 frames per second if you are streaming with this you can stream it up to 60 frames per second there are dual microphone slots here on the top you can see the grilles there though nikon didn't include wind covers in the box competitors do and i find it a little odd that nikon opted to charge extra if you need them this is for creators it's for video you're going to be outside a lot include those wind covers just in the box and they're trying to save some costs here on the low end model and keep it affordable but it seems like something that really just should have been in the box to begin with let's talk about the design of the nikon z30 so like many other nikon cameras it does have a metal body it's magnesium alloy body though some parts of it are still plastic you're noticing on the back of the articulating screen all plastic here that does attribute a little bit of a cheap feeling to parts like the screen but it's still glass and touch screen on your side which is great it's just like the one of the minor parts that give it a little more of a cheap feeling but the rest of this is all metal which is really nice it feels like a very solid durable camera that's also very compact since i mentioned the screen it is a three inch articulating screen so you can pull it out it can rotate around so you can use it for uh taking selfie video stuff like that turn it view it this way it gives you good angle control moving up or down wherever you happen to be shooting and when you're done you can also close it which protects the screen again solid for creators because this is going into a bag or something it's gonna be protected your screen is not you know exposed there so put a lens cover on your screen is closed your camera should be pretty safe when you toss it into your bag it is a three inch screen the z50 i believe has a 3.2 inch screen though this 3.2 inch has the same resolution so compared to the z50 this is actually a higher pixel density it's about 10 40 um dots 1040k dots and when you have that same resolution on a smaller screen they're closer together so i think the screen on this looks pretty solid it's the same screen as the zf uh the zfc which is also pretty darn good not as good as the high-end z series like the z6 and the z7 or the z72 z62 but still it's pretty good screen and i think it's better than the z50 even though it's a little bit smaller higher pixel density it is a touch screen so you can use this to interface with the camera which can be really helpful in a variety of situations so you're shooting you know in selfie mode you've got the screen turned around to face you you're able to tap on what you want to change the focus position you can also use it to actually capture so i can tap on the screen and capture a photo directly without having to even press the shutter which can be useful depending on the situation so overall it's a really nice screen and you can do a few different things on it that you can't with some other nikon cameras and couldn't be able to adjust the brightness this thing runs off a single uhs one sd card slot supports sd sdhc and sd xd cards use an sdxc card uh s1 i would have preferred uhs2 here but it is a beginner entry-level camera so i get the design decision it is running off of a single battery it is an en el25 nikon says this is rated for 330 shots or about 75 minutes of video recording for reports there is a microphone input there is an hdmi but it is a micro hdmi for output and then there is a usb c port that is used for charging up the camera as well as transferring data and live streaming when testing this i was shooting on nikon's dx 16 to 50 millimeter lens though there are two other options available with different levels of zoom so if you need a little bit more zoom you could opt for the 18 to 140 millimeter or the 50 to 250 millimeter so a lot more zoom options all three of those lenses are vr lenses this camera does not have in body stabilization of the sensor so any vibration reduction is going to come from the lenses so it is important that nikon is offering vr and all the lenses that it offers really that's not a ton of lens options it's it is kind of limited there's basically three cameras and three different lenses you can choose from it's not a lot but you can still use any of nikon's other z mount lenses so you've got something like this guy here that i used for my other cameras the 24 to 70 f4 yeah this straps on here just fine you can you can use this it's a lot bigger these lenses that are the zdx lenses they are smaller more compact and lighter so these are meant to be a lighter lens you know something like this here the 24 to 70 it's a little more expensive and it's it's very heavy it's all metal uh to go with the larger cameras these are also for the full frame cameras so you don't need it on the aps-c sensor but they are options you can also in a pinch use the nikon f to z adapters and pull any nikon z lens or f lenses that you may have lying around nikon has announced that rather lens is coming down the pipeline so there will be some additional lenses that you can attach to these guys coming soon and i was really impressed with how the 16 to 50 performed so i was happy with the lenses they currently offered though i think they're going to need more including prime lenses going forward since there's an apple channel you know i was going to talk about some connectivity features so this guy the z30 will connect to your iphone using the snapbridge application you can use the snapbridge application for a bunch of different things first the maybe the biggest is that you can use it to control the camera so take the camera set it on a tripod uh get back control it from your phone and do your thing it's pretty handy to be able to do that and you can make adjustments in what the camera settings are so as you're looking at you can see preview make those adjustments as you need the other option is you can also transfer your photos from the z30 to your phone you can transfer lower resolution just for proofing or move over high resolutions to actually move into your workflow share them on social media to your editing on your iphone and ipad be good to go that way so it's pretty sweet people to use that snapbridge application with this camera all cameras these days really should have wireless connectivity directly to your phone so as we show with some sample footage let's talk about what i liked and didn't like about the new nikon z30 creators camera hey so right now it is about 8 30 at night we are on the lake the sun is going down it's really nice kind of like twilight hour shots it's pretty fun and this camera seems to work really well evenly holding handheld once you say mosby you agree yeah that's right buddy i'll see you guys one of the biggest differences with this camera that i love is that unlike pretty much all of other nikon's cameras there's no artificial 30 minute limit on video recording you can record video until your card is full or your battery dies or the thing gets too high in the sun and it has to cool down for a moment that's a huge benefit you're trying to record video that's longer than 30 minutes it's a pain in the butt on other nikon cameras and i'm pretty excited that they removed it on this kind of smaller vlogging camera especially with such good resolutions another big difference is that nikon isn't cropping the video at any resolution this is huge for vlogging other cameras including the sony zv e10 actually crop in your video at certain resolutions but when you're shooting something like a selfie video you're vlogging you need that wider field of view and it sucks to crop it in so no matter whether you're shooting at 4k or 1080 or 60 from a second 120 frames per second 24 frames per second none of them will be cropped in on the nikon z30 the grip on this camera is fantastic it's so easy to hold on to no matter what i'm doing wiggling it around this thing is solid in my hand there are other ones that just don't have much of a bump there and they don't hold into your hand quite as well this just has an amazing grip and every camera should have a grip that is this solid no matter whether i'm holding it regular or even shooting it backward it's really easy to hold on to this camera the one negative though is the shutter button for video is still kind of funky to hit you know if i'm holding it this way to shoot myself i can hit the shutter button easily enough but that video button is a little bit further back it is better placement than on the back of the camera like other nikons but it's still just a little bit weird to hit and there's some other buttons up there so a little bit of muscle memory i think to find exactly where that button is and be able to reliably hit it when you do hit that button though there is a front facing status light to let you know that video recording is happening in my testing the auto focus has been rock solid the 209 hybrid autofocus system including with eye tracking has worked great whether i'm in front of the camera behind the camera it really tracks the subject well both in photos and for video it's been really nice to have it's still similar to nikon's other auto focus systems but i tested mostly with video here and yeah it worked really well in keeping the subject in frame whether it's me even my dogs it is keeping them in focus while shooting video it did an amazing job just keeping everything sharp another thing i noticed is since this is a beginner camera it does have an auto mode some cameras just don't have an auto mode anymore uh when you're getting to the higher price range which is good but for a lot of people who are picking up this camera they're going to want some assistance from that auto mode now when you're shooting in auto mode typically you can't control anything it's just done automatically but when you're vlogging you're shooting video there are times when you might want to control things like the lighting a little bit more which is why this is great because even in auto mode you can adjust the exposure compensation so you can lighten up or darken up any of your photos or videos that you're capturing for the battery nikon says you're going to get roughly around 330 shots on this en el25 in my testing i got far more than that it was easily able to capture almost double that number of photos just based on the usage that i've had in the time that i've used it it really depends on how you use your camera and i do get particularly good about turning off the camera when not in use and just depending on the shots that you're getting so i think it will depend what you're doing but i thought the battery life was fantastic on this thing and nikon's numbers were very conservative but beyond that you can also use that usbc port to charge your camera this is huge because if you're running around with a camera bag on you you can toss in an additional usbc pv battery and charge up your camera just while you're going in while you're shooting so i can have this in my hand connect a usbc cable that supports power delivery and put a massive battery pack like these things are overkill right here for sure but the zendor super tank all usbc outputs this is a new one from hyper and the 245 wide maximum output but multiple 100 watt outputs and 65 outputs these are crazy battery packs that are huge easily can slip into your bag and run your camera for days on end without ever having to take out that battery and slip it into a dedicated charger so when i'm running around the city shooting i'm gonna put one of these in my bag not something necessarily that big because those can get heavy but there are smaller more compact versions that you can bring with you to power up your camera and not even have to worry about that battery life at all the last thing that might be a little bit controversial because it's both pro and a con for me and that's going to be the uh the evf or lack of an evf so some people really want that electric viewfinder personally i don't mind that it's not there but it's almost just habit for me to keep trying to use it as i started off shooting this thing i kept bringing it up to my eye like i was gonna actually look through a viewfinder like no i need to use the actual display i gotta turn it around i gotta use this display here and it was such muscle memory for me to keep turning to an evf and if you're in a really bright situation sometimes the screen can be difficult to see exactly what you're seeing and that's tough you can get covers that give you a little bit more you know coverage on that that can just magnetically snap on there or velcro snap on their adhesive snap on there to give you a better you know sun cover from glare and everything like that lets you see the screen a little bit more but you shouldn't have to there are obviously other options here if you don't you know if you do want that that evf go to one of the other cameras there is the z50 that's a little bit more or personally i'm a huge fan of the zfc if you guys have all seen this one before this is a great camera it's got this retro vibe to it does have an evf on there the three inch screen that pivots out the back a lot of the similar stuff but it's not just made for the vlogging stuff it's not designed for that it doesn't have the adjustable compensation when you're in automatic mode it doesn't have the ability to capture video for extended periods of time and it's much more into the manual controls as you can maybe see on the camera here if my actual camera would focus and stop trying to track my face but there are all these manual dials at the top so this can be overwhelming for beginner when you really want just a camera that you can shoot with so there are options if you want that evf it's just something you need to be aware of when you're picking one of these things up you can buy the nikon z30 by itself just the camera with the lens or there's also a creator kit option which is kind of neat you it comes with a few different things including this which is a small rig tripod so creators tripod that'll also hold a camera not a camera it'll hold a remote in here so you can use the remote at the same time then you have the camera on the top and then there is an additional microphone that comes with so you get a remote a tripod and a microphone that you can connect which is obviously all geared towards creators so you can go around film your videos set it down with the tripod and get some distance away squeeze the button on the side to adjust the smaller tripod and move it up just like that so you can go ahead prop your tripod get your shot grab it sync everything to your phone and be on your way so if you're looking for that creator stuff this is a good option to get it with so that's the z30 camera from nikon mirrorless compact with video in mind let me know what you guys think down below in the comments or on twitter at android underscore osu if you'd like to grab one of these there's a link in the description let me know what you guys think i'll catch you in the next video youthis is the all-new nikon z30 and it is a fantastic compact mirrorless camera for video creators and in this video of the similar stuff but it's not just made for the vlogging stuff it's not designed for that it doesn't have the adjustable compensation when you're in automatic mode it doesn't have the ability to capture video for extended periods of time and it's much more into the manual controls as you can maybe see on the camera here if my actual camera would focus and stop trying to track my face but there are all these manual dials at the top so this can be overwhelming for beginner when you really want just a camera that you can shoot with so there are options if you want that evf it's just something you need to be aware of when you're picking one of these things up you can buy the nikon z30 by itself just the camera with the lens or there's also a creator kit option which is kind of neat you it comes with a few different things including this which is a small rig tripod so creators tripod that'll also hold a camera not a camera it'll hold a remote in here so you can use the remote at the same time then you have the camera on the top and then there is an additional microphone that comes with so you get a remote a tripod and a microphone that you can connect which is obviously all geared towards creators so you can go around film your videos set it down with the tripod and get some distance away squeeze the button on the side to adjust the smaller tripod and move it up just like that so you can go ahead prop your tripod get your shot grab it sync everything to your phone and be on your way so if you're looking for that creator stuff this is a good option to get it with so that's the z30 camera from nikon mirrorless compact with video in mind let me know what you guys think down below in the comments or on twitter at android underscore osu if you'd like to grab one of these there's a link in the description let me know what you guys think i'll catch you in the next video you\n"
