Hands-On - Apple's New iPhone XS & XS Max Smart Battery Case!

Apple has released a new smart battery case that lets you keep the same amperage but increase the voltage to seven point three, roughly double the voltage of the old ones when you multiply those together to get the full power output of the battery case. You're looking at 10.1 amps on this new one compared to seven and point thirteen on the iPhone 6 and eight point nine eight on the iPhone 7. Other than the beefed up capacity, these are very similar to Apple's older battery cases. They still have that silicone exterior which is good to hold on to but maybe a little bit more difficult to slide in and out of pockets. The buttons on the exterior are a little bit off-color in either the black or the white version so they're a little bit easy to see. They're still textured so you can feel them inside.

It's also got a microfiber lining. The important thing which is probably the biggest change is there's no longer a chin on this case, which makes it fit a whole lot slimmer along the top. You can see how it still has that flexible spot that's how you get your phone in and out. It makes it really easy and there's no kind of locking system like on the Mophie cases that you have to worry about ever breaking down. The line along the bottom you can see all the mic and the output ports as well as a lightning port to actually charge this thing up.

You also don't have kind of the double chain on the back, it was kinda like a hump in the middle. Now there's only they bump towards the bottom of the thing and it actually looks quite a bit better than the original smart battery case. I've got my iPhone 10's max here, we're gonna pop off my current cage which just happens to be one of the Nomad rugged leather cases. I'm going to just take a second to admire how nice the phone feels outside of any case then we're gonna slide it into the smart battery case.

Really the top just gets pushed back a little bit and it slides down the sides until it goes all the way in. Everything lines up perfectly, there's no weird stuff to it, it goes and extremely easily and on the top fold right back over Apple's tolerances are insane which means this thing fits like a glove. There's no gaps or looseness this thing really just fits perfectly to this phone more than any other third party case that we've ever seen.

Obviously all the ports line up from the bottom, Apple is giving a lot of credit to their audio department for making sure there's no audio repercussions from using a case like this. That fits over the bottom of your phone, they can reports line up perfectly and there's gonna be no issues of that getting in the way.

You can use USB CPD so USB see two lightning cable with a good like 18 watt charger to charge up the battery case even faster which is awesome, I love that there is a Lightning port on here so you don't have to have a different cable just because you're charging your battery case on instead of just your phone.

New to this version as well is it supports a wireless charging. We've got our raft power charger here we can have set it on there and it charges right away, you can see that pop up and it is centered in the middle which is very nice.

It's not towards the bottom of the hump it's actually towards the middle of the phone itself which makes it really easy to line up because you line it up just as you would with the phone without the case on there. This thing shipped to us completely empty so when I first put it on there, it immediately goes to charge the phone.

First once the phone is charged then we'll move on to that battery case, as you can see the case is now registered with my phone and you can see both of them listed in that battery section. If you put it on a charger again and on the lock screen you'll see both of the case and the phone show open the lock screen so you can see the battery percentages and the fact that they're both charging.

Early first impressions of Apple's new smart battery case, it's pretty nice if you need some extra battery life out of your phone. Definitely consider this. You'll find a link for below in the description but we're gonna spend a few more days with it really putting it through its paces and we'll have a full review soon.
