The Most Amazing Thing About the Honda Fit

What's the most amazing thing about the Honda Fit? The thing that really makes it stand out, well like Doctor Who's Time Machine, the TARDIS. The fit seems bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. This is a really short car, but grown-ups can fit very comfortably in the backseat. The cargo area is really deep, you can flip up the backseat and haul stuff or fold it down for a big open space. Thing is, every fit has been like this.

The Honda Fit has also been frugal, good with fuel, economical to run, and extremely reliable. But as any corporate HR person would tell you, there's always room for individual growth, so it's time for a third generation fit. What got better? Well, older fits, especially with the automatic, could have been beaten in a race by a guy on a bicycle. That's not the case with this fit, some credit for that goes to the new continuously variable transmission that replaces the old 5-speed automatic.

Fuel economy should be better, and it is. The much larger Honda Accord was getting basically the same fuel economy as the much smaller fit, now the new drivetrain should improve the fit's fuel economy. I drove this around for a while and got 39 miles per gallon overall. We'll see how it does in our instrumented test.

The interior of the Honda Fit has been spiffed up. This is a loaded EXL, now you're not going to confuse it with a Mercedes. For the first time, you can get leather in a fit, and also get heated seats. There's a bit of soft stuff on the dashboard, and there are more new features like a touchscreen radio that seems to play anything. It has a standard backup camera, and Honda's lanewatch camera system to show what's in your right blind spot.

The old fit had done poorly in the Insurance Institute small overlap test. Honda says this one will do better. What got worse? Well, the steering lost some of its feel, so the fit isn't quite as sporty as it used to be. The fancy new radio could really use a knob or two. Even though road noise went from being obnoxiously loud to just plain loud and noise with the CBT, it's a constant companion like the snoring guy sleeping on your couch you just won't go home.

The new fit is still a fit, it's a little more grown-up, a little bit nicer than before. But it still holds a unique place within the subcompact market. To see how it stacks up, check out Consumer Reports online.
