DLNA Support: A Technology Worth Mentioning
I'm not going to lie, I didn't even know what DLNA stood for when I read an article about it recently. I still don't really understand what it is, but apparently, it's just local network streaming of media. The term "DLNA" makes it sound kind of fancy, which is probably the case. In other words, this technology allows you to seamlessly stream movies, pictures, and music from your local network to a device that supports DLNA, such as your PlayStation 3, but not the PlayStation 4. I have to say, there's something really cool about ripping DVDs to your computer's hard drive and then streaming them to a gaming console or anything else that supports DLNA. I've done this a couple of times from my iTunes movies library from DVDs that I've personally ripped to my Mac Pro's hard drive, and it was actually pretty cool.
However, I don't use this feature often because I primarily stream my media from Netflix. But if you have a huge media library of music, movies, and photos on your local network and you want to stream that to your PS4 or Xbox One, unfortunately, the Xbox One doesn't support DLNA as well as some other devices might. Polygon.com recently posted an article about this, but I still wanted to share it with you guys in case you weren't aware.
Is DLNA Support Going to Turn Me Away from the PS4 or Xbox One?
No, no, seriously not whatsoever. I mean, I have my Apple TV primarily for entertainment delivery, and I'll be buying the PS4 for games, as well as the Xbox One for games and their all-in-one experience. That alone could kind of replace the functionality of my Apple TV. We'll see how much I enjoy streaming Netflix on the Xbox One and if it works with voice commands like "Xbox pause" because that would be really cool.
The Choice is Yours
It honestly comes down to personal preference and what you're looking to get out of said device. We do have the choice, which is kind of awesome. There are so many amazing products and services available, and it's fun to explore them all. So, there you go; those are my thoughts on DLNA support.
