Everything NEW in iOS 14 Beta 4! New Widget, New Icons! 3D Touch Returns!

Welcome to Apple Insider, I'm Andrew here with the fourth developer beta of iOS 14. At this point, no public beta has been released, but it's just around the corner, and Apple continues to chop away at the new update, bringing more features, enhancements, and tweaks as we approach release.

As you can see before us, we have two phones on the left, running iOS 14 beta 3, and on the right, running the fourth beta. We're going to take a closer look at some of the different changes between the two updates by heading into our widget view. Let's do jiggle mode, tap that plus button at the top-left hand corner, and see what we have here.

Upon entering our widget view, you'll notice a few changes in the most recent beta. One of the notable changes is the return of the weather widget, which was not present in the last beta. As you can see, it's now back at the bottom of the list on the right-hand side. This change marks an improvement over the previous iteration, and we're excited to explore more of what iOS 14 has to offer.

Another new feature that's been added is a TV widget. Although this wasn't present in the previous beta, it's now available in the fourth beta. As you can see, the TV widget comes in three different sizes – small, medium, and large. This allows users to pick up where they left off or recommend other shows that they might be interested in watching.

In addition to these visual updates, we also have support for Apple and Google's COVID-19 exposure notification system. If you jump into settings on the older beta, you'll see nothing under Emergency SOS, but on our device running the fourth beta, we have Exposure Notification as a new option inside of settings. This feature provides users with just a little bit of information if they've installed any exposed apps and allows them to choose between different apps and regions that they're in.

Furthermore, it tells users how those exposure notifications work and lets anyone know if you haven't exposed anything. It's worth noting that these third-party exposure notification apps need to take advantage of this API. Within the new beta, there's a small pop-up screen letting users about powerful search. This release gives users recommendations toward the top of notes that may be relevant to them at the moment.

Another notable change is the return of 3D Touch for compatible devices. Instead of always using haptic touch, users can now use 3D Touch on devices that still support it. We also have better search within apps and contacts, thanks to Vittorio on Twitter, who sourced this information out for us. If you're one of the latest iPad Pro users with an 11-inch or a 12.9-inch version, you'll notice a new feature in the Measure app that will automatically give you someone's height.

This works as long as your device has the Lidar sensor on board; otherwise, you can use the camera to measure and calculate the person's height. Moving on, we also have a change in the list or widgets for reminders, which now has a dark gray background rather than black when you're in dark mode on your device.

Lastly, but not least importantly, there are new icons inside the weather app. The changes can be seen as simple adjustments like moving the cloud from the left to the right of the sun and adjusting the placement of the lightning bolt.

These updates aren't exhaustive; we encourage you to let us know if you find any other changes or additions in the fourth beta of iOS 14. We'll make sure to update our article with those changes as soon as possible, so stay tuned for more on this topic.
